Oh, what a great way to use crabapples! Now I wish there were crabapple trees in our vicinity. Most people these days consider them a nuisance because the fruit falls and makes a mess. I’ll keep an eye and ear out though. We do have several apple orchards that are You Pick and they have several varieties of apples. But I like the idea of turning crabapples into good apple juice.
Hi EDickins. My sister lives in town and her next door neighbor has the most gorgeous dark red apples. That's how I get this beautiful color. But having a variety of crabapples makes the BEST juice! I'm sure if you knock on someone's door and ask if you could pick some crabapples, you'll get a yes for an answer. When I was a young teen, an older lady lived up the road from my grandparents. She had the biggest crabapple tree I had ever seen at that time. Well, the teens liked to go over there and climb up in her tree to get the apples. She would come out and ask them to get out of the tree. They would jump down and run off calling her bad names. My grandmother told me that this lady would most likely give me permission if I knocked on her door and asked politely. Soooo, I did. She was so grateful that I wanted some of the abundance of crabapples so she wouldn't have to keep raking them up. She went and got a tarp to put under the tree and a ladder to stand on so she could shake the branches so the apples would fall. She preceded to help me load up some paper grocery bags with them! She explained to me while I was there, that she didn't want anyone climbing up in the tree because she feared someone would fall and get seriously hurt. She told me to come back any time for apples. 😊
Hi Lighthousefan. Thank you! I always take the opportunity to forage when it's available. And as far as strength goes, the older I get, the heavier that pot gets. 🤭😊
Hi Munkey. Thank you. 😌 Many hours are put in to tending the gardens. I take care of the vegetable and fruit gardens/patches and my husband takes care of the flower and green plants (hostas) gardens. I did this video last season. Right now we just went through another snow storm and I'll be out shoveling today for several hours. You mentioned your garden being like a jungle. I'm not looking forward to seeing the condition of our honeyberry and blueberry bushes once the snow melts. We had a storm about 6 weeks ago that dumped 24 inches of heavy snow in 36 hours. It appears it crushed my berry bushes. 😭 I'm hoping and praying that most of the branches bent under the weight of the snow and that they didn't snap like some of the huge limbs on our trees. February and March we get our big dumps of snow and then in April it starts melting. Although last spring we still had snow storms in April & May and I was actually born in a blizzard in the middleof April. Welcome to tropical Minnesota (USA 🇺🇸) where we can have all 4 seasons in 24 hours! Yes, we've had snow in July, and July & August are our hottest months! 🤣 We've only got about a 3 1/2 month growing season where we live. Sorry for bunny trailing off topic... sort of. 😊
I love making apple concentrate juice, just like I make fresh cranberry juice concentrate. I don’t add sugar just concentrated juice. Water bath can it then when I want to make juice I just dilute adding water and sugar to make juice.
Hi Enid. I've made cranberry juice from high bush cranberries that I forage. I leave some plain for medicinal use and then add a bit of sweetener to the rest for drinking. 😊
Hi LittlePrepper. To make fruit vinegar, natural yeast from the fruit peels or skins feed from the sugar that's in the fruit or added sugar and this is what causes it to ferment. When you heat or cook any fruit, you are killing the yeast. So, I wouldn't advise trying to use the mash to make vinegar. You could run it through a fruit mill or smash the mash through a fine mesh sieve to get an apple puree, but the flavor isn't going to be as intense because most of it is in your juice. If you compost, add it to that. Birds, squirrels, rabbits, deer, bear, etc. like the mash. Carnivorous animals don't bother with it. 😊
Maravilhoso. Divino fiz o meu. Muito obrigada minha querida por ensinar tanta maravilha. . Uma pergunta posso fazer esse mesmo procedimento com abacaxi ?? ❤❤❤
Hi Claudia. I generally do heat my jars when adding something hot to them. It helps bring it up to processing temp faster. It's not necessary, but just make sure your jars are not cold when adding the hot juice. Temperature shock can sometimes lead to cracked jars. 😊
Hi G Bel. I don't, sorry. I forage from old sites that had homesteads decades ago. I think the last time there was a home still standing in that area was about 40+ years ago. There's a variety of crabs and some regular eating apples in that area. 😊
Hi Diane. I did this video quite some time ago. If I recall correctly I used two, 5 gallon (19 liter) buckets of crabapples. I generally don't weigh my fruits or vegetables unless I'm fermenting them. I hope that gives you an estimate. 😊
Hi Roni. I bought them at the hardware store. They are deer skin with Thinsulate lining. They're winter gloves but I keep a few pair in my canning supplies. 😊
My grandsons just chopped up 21 pounds of apples for me in about 15 minutes with 2 apple slicers and we made 19 pints of apple butter 🤩
Sharon, I need to borrow you grandson! 😆 Way to go on the apple butter! 😍
How many kilos Apple Did you use ❤
Thanks for explaining the steam canning processs for the juice. Just what I needed. 😊
Hi Barb. I'm glad this was helpful. I don't recall the last time I used my WB canner. Anything I would normally WB can, I steam can instead. 😊

Thank you, Jeannine. I'm glad the videos are easy to understand. 😊💖
Wow. That juice looks beautiful and refreshing.
Hi Pamela. Thank you! It's quite tasty. 😊
WOW your juice looks great! Wish we had the opportunity to forage like that. You must be really strong to lift that full pot.

Can you steam can anything that you would waterbath?
Hi Cherry Purdy. Yes! Anything you would WB can, steam can for that amount of time. 😊
