  • A book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse study of the Old Testament.
Chapter 33 is the final woe in the section of woe’s we have been reading. This is a woe against the destroyers of God’s people. It is the most eschatological of the "woes," though it contains many references to the Assyrian invasion it looks out to the distant future, to another one called the “Assyrian.” When the anti-christ arises, when the world rallies around him, when people are deceived by him. Then tribulation begins to happen that will shake this world up. Look for the near and far in these verses.
This is the only "woe" directed against a foreign power, the others in this section being addressed to the Judahites. This “woe” is a Prophecy of Deliverance from their enemies. This is a woe against Assyria for its destructive opposition to God and His plans. This is the woe is against the ones who have been destroying God’s people and the land of Israel. This was going to happen in the days of Isaiah and in a coming day at the end. The first six verses anticipate the salvation of Zion and contain a prayer of the remnant for deliverance.
