A tour of Manhattan (New York) in 8K (filmed with a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra)

  • This video shows different views of Uptown, Midtown, and Lower Manhattan in 8K. It's certainly not a comprehensive tour, but it gives you a sense of what the city looks and feels like in Spring 2021. (The footage is from March through May of 2021.)
The video is in 8K resolution (7680 by 4320 pixels) and runs at 24 frames per second. I rendered it using Olive (a free and open-source video editor), since Corel Video Studio doesn't yet have an 8K output option, to the best of my knowledge. Rendering the video took over 26 hours, but I think the wait was worth it. The total bitrate of the video as it exists on my computer is 106,381 kbps, which equals around 13 megabytes per second. I used HEVC (H.265) encoding with a CRF (constant rate factor) of 22.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the output. I haven't yet found a consumer-oriented camcorder with 8K output, so being able to film 8K on a device that also makes phone calls and accesses the web is pretty neat. It's not cinema-quality footage, of course, but I do think the result is a step up from my trusty 4K camcorder.
Admittedly, I don't yet even have an 8K monitor, so I don't know what the footage actually looks like in 8K! However, the images look quite good on my 4K monitor, probably because there is more data available per pixel for the computer to output onto my display.
The footage from 0:00 to 3:21 was filmed without the image stabilization option, whereas the footage from 3:23 onward did use that option. The main benefit to not using the image stabilization is that the video does not appear as 'zoomed in' as much, which allows you to capture a wider field of view. In addition, when image stabilization is turned on, the video at the edges of the frame appeared somewhat blurred at times--but perhaps that was a coincidence. Going forward, I plan to keep image stabilization turned off.
Not surprisingly, the video quality is best in sunny lighting and worsens as the sky turns cloudy and/or dark. I also found the detail shown in close-up shots to be particularly impressive.
At any rate, I hope to record and share more 8K videos in the future, and I hope you enjoyed this one!
