I only have one Maynard story and it was from the Denver trumpet symposium. Never saw him play before that... And needless to say, I was dumbfounded. Anyway, my story... I'm a little college student in line to get an autograph from Maynard who is hunched over the table just writing as fast as he can on everything that anyone gives him. In front of me was Lou Soloff, he was sneaking in the line to prank Maynard. When Lou got to the start of the line he handed Maynard his program, Maynard did not even look up by this point at whoever was handing him paper. So, he wrote something on the paper, gave it back to Lou, all without even looking up. Five seconds later Lou is screaming with laughter and showing everyone what Maynard had written: "fu*k you with love, Maynard Ferguson" !!
Great "Behind the Scenes" video. Thanks Lynn! Clearly, Maynard suffered from the "Gotta keep my body and mouth moving at all times" syndrome. LOL. But, he was indeed, The Master!
Just watch a documentary on Netflix about Timothy Leary, at one point they were all living in an old Victorian mansion still experimenting and tripping. Anyway they said quite a few artists and musicians would stay there and they briefly flashed a picture of a trumpet player...had to rewind and freeze..it was Maynard!! Now this video confirms it... never knew he was "Experienced" 😛 Forever a fan!!!!
Great video is little short a other part is Ben Western n Betty Carter any way is good I saw Maynard in Puerto Rico in 80" n 90 " at Bellas Artes concert hall
Thanks Lynn! What a treat. Any chance to get your autographed photo? I saw you with Maynard when I was 16! Now 60! Still a player and big fan of yours! Glenn Miller! Glennsband@aol.com
Brilliant guy, as well as Lynn Nicholson. The games he could be referring to remind me of the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. I'm guessing he was a well read man. A game terminology ie tennis only applies to that game and would not be a good idea to apply the same lingo to say flying a plane.
Depends on your use.... For commercial use, I highly recommend the Bach Commercial trumpet, or my own LynnZhorn. For legit use, I would ask some good legit players.... :)
37 is a good classical horn with a solid sound but has a bit of resistance, 43 is free flowing and has a large, bright sound. really depends on what you prefer.
He is why so many of us play.
It was fantastic for you to share this Lynn. You have the same compassion as Maynard. Keep strong.
If you have any doubt Maynard was a very very good jazz player, listen to the few snippets of improvisation here. FANTASTIC. Thanks Lynn.
Anyone who doubts he was a good jazz player has not seen him on August 14,1960
What a great man, human , and atists!!

Neat to see him in an informal rehearsal setting
this was filmed in Holland.
The bold guy with the moustache said: "It'l take me two years before I dare to play (the trumpet) again"
Very interesting to see that he warms up his body the same way we do when we are starting to sing.

Maybe this is one reason he delved into Indian mysticism....
Thanks. The song is the standard, "The Man I Love."
Thanks Lynn!
Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

He had a strange philosophy but a great look into it
