I had a 2002 Tii when I was 19 (in 1995 so it was a classic then), it was white with the full turbo body kit, big wheels, etc. You could not turn the steering wheel at standstill.
My insurance was £2k a year but I loved it.
I lived in Tunbridge Wells and the only problem was I would get a producer at least once a week (in the UK then if you got pulled by the cops you had to turn up and produce your docs, insurance, MOT, etc). Because I was 19 and driving a classic they always pulled me over, plus it looks like a drug dealer car.
I used to turn up at the police station and the girl behind the desk was "Hi, you got another one...". One week I got three and I said to her this has got to stop. Not sure what she said but I never got pulled again, I assume it was a "guys leave him alone, it is all legal".
I miss that car. Plus it would be worth loads now. The head gasket went and I could not afford to repair it, sold it for scrap. 😞

Very good video. Thank you. I love mine. Only downer for me is the buzzyness on motorway driving - it needs the optional 5 speed - but it’s not that kid of car anyway ... it loves corners and climbs and countryside.

How much is the sale?
We owned one of these from ‘82 until 2014. Massive turbo lag but at 4K it just lights up - very much like a 930 of the day. In first gear, once you hit boost at 4k rpm, count to one and grab 2nd because redline comes on fast. You’ll have a little more time in 2nd and in 3rd is where the real fun lies because you can really work the power into triple digit speeds .... oh, but you’ll need a racetrack or a private road for that. We used Lime Rock Park in CT. Unlike the 930, BMW built a TON of understeer into these cars, I think they felt less dead customers was preferable to their business plan. Despite the 25% LSD, and our rebuilding it to 75%, tt had a very small rear sway bar and was impossible to rotate at speed, which I did not like, but we didn’t swap parts to turn that out of it. My other 2002 track car sported larger sway bars and bent front struts to achieve the negative camber these chassis could never deliver through adjustments or bolt-on camber plates. As I feared, these really took off in value once we sold ours. Isn’t it always the way? :)

German Retro Guy - I remember when £10k could get you one. Nowadays a tii will fetch £25k plus. I built a sixteen valve 1602 for less than 20k all in. #bmw16v02
