Way to go Dee!! 😁 The trick to SA2 is the billions of times we replayed those levels, we were mostly kids and had a different acceptance to jank than we do now. But yeah the game is not easy.

I dunno. Watching this playthrough has honestly been a struggle session of seeing someone blame the game for their own lack of intuition or basic ability. The Biolizard fight is a perfect example. Claiming "it's not that obvious on an old game" when there's a literal glowing pipe to grind on that lights up when the rest of the time it isn't glowing? Claiming the energy balls are unpredictable when they literally only come in two flavours: Up and down? And then saying there's no way to avoid them while literally doing nothing but press the jump button despite having literally made it to the final act of the game fully aware of the fact that there's a **ROLL BUTTON**?
There's only so many times you can blame the game and call it janky before it becomes pretty evident that the person just plain wasn't paying any attention the entire time they played the game.

  • @robertpowell9982

I think your biggest issue with the game beforehand was just pushing yourself too much to finish it, rather than stepping away once you got a bit frustrated, in which case just made it more difficult when it came to learning how each stage works.
In that sense it's beneficial to replay some of the earlier stages, to get better with the gameplay and perhaps even grind some lives as well.
Either way, its cool to see you persevere and have a bit more fun with the game.

@@robertpowell9982 Again, I invited that fatal mistake upon myself in my younger years. And much of that stubborn frustration was because I was managing severe insecurities stemming from a deep delusion that is now the foundation of my current self; I had to learn a fair bit of mindful temperance to both loosen my attachment to that identifier and lean into the flow of the game before I could git gud.

"Why Gerald made Shadow look like Sonic" - There's a reason, but I don't think it's ever technically confirmed... Shadow came out of a 50 year stasis when this game started, so he's older than Sonic, but you might remember some murals in Sonic Adventure 1 from the Echidna tribe's ruins. They predicted the fight between Sonic & Chaos. Dr. Gerald Robotnik used these murals, as he thought they predicted the ultimate lifeform. That's also why there are water monsters kinda like Chaos in the levels on the Ark... But I don't think Sega ever outright _says_ any of this in the games themselves... It's just implied through context.

the ending is genuinely one of the most beautiful things i've seen in a video game even though shadow didn't actually die, i don't think that takes away from his sacrifice, he made a promise to maria to help the people and he's continuing to keep that promise all the way to today

There are a couple of optional upgrades you can unlock by revisiting previous stages, that make the final story stage, Cannon's Core, a lot easier. Lots of people mentioned the Air Necklace, found in Aquatic Mines, which lets Knuckles breathe underwater, so you don't need to deal with the air bubbles. The Air Necklace can be found on the first visit to Aquatic Mine, but it's hidden pretty well, so most players don't find it on their first run. The other notable upgrade is the Magic Hands, found in City Escape (requires Flame Ring and Bounce Bracelet), which allows Sonic to just instantly kill a nearby enemy without even moving. This is useful for that early spot in Sonic's segment, allowing you to kill the Artificial Chaos over the bottomless pit remotely, without leaving the safety of the ground. The intention was probably for players to explore around and replay stages (the extra missions and the chao garden both incentivize this) and find all these extra upgrades before tackling the final story. Unfortunately, while this design philosophy worked well at the time, it doesn't fit the way streaming content is usually handled, though in the developer's defense, livestreaming didn't exist back them.
Your suspicion that you were missing something about the Biolizard fight was correct. For the dark orbs he spits at you, you're supposed to jump over the low ones and somersault under the high ones. Omachao even mentions this sometimes after a death, but people tend to not notice Omachao when they're dialed in. This part of the fight actually becomes a pretty simple rhythm minigame with the somersault. I suspect the somersault not being in any of the other 3D games is what's causing you to forget the somersault exists, as there were a lot of points that stumped you throughout your playthrough where somersault was the answer. The pink balls though... yeah, that part is pretty janky. A deeper understanding of exactly how the homing attack works in this game (especially as opposed to more modern versions) helps, but... it's not great. One more interesting note is that Biolizard is sort of an evolution of the King Boom Boo fight, where you're intended to keep a set distance from a chasing boss, without going too slow or too fast. Unfortunately, this is not conveyed to the player nearly as well in Boom Boo's case, resulting in the mad dash rage we saw in the that fight (you're not the only streamer I've seen miss this strategy and rage on Boom Boo).
Either way, I'm super impressed with how well you did in Cannon's Core. You got a couple game overs, but every attempt, you learned and improved. And despite brute forcing Biolizard, you still made it through. You kept your cool through the whole video. Amazing job!

  • @chloemarlowe3817

48:18 so interestingly, it wasn't until the recent Shadow Generations release that we got any explanation as to why Shadow was created in the form of a hedgehog. In Shadow Generations, you collect pages of Gerald's diary and in it is Sega canonizing an almost 2 decades long fan theory.
This fan theory is a lot of connecting dots and making some assumptions. In the Ark, in the room where Shadow fights the Biolizard, there is a master emerald shrine. This is an unusual kind of thing of thing to have located aboard a scientific lab in space so what gives? The shrine is an exact replication of the shrine found in Mystic Ruins in Adventure 1. In Mystic Ruins, there is a mural depicting Perfect Chaos, the final boss of Adventure 1. It is theorized that Biolizard was based on Perfect Chaos. However, the Biolizard Ultimate Life Form prototype failed so Gerald went back to the drawing board. The only other prophecy mural we'd seen up to this point is in Sonic 3&Knuckles. The fan theory for the longest time operated under the unproven assumption that Gerald somehow found Angel Island, and found the only other mural we've seen so far. Shadow Generations' Gerald Diary finally confirmed that he indeed did visit Angel Island. In the Angel Island mural is a depiction of Sonic fighting Eggman in the Doomsday Zone Super Sonic final battle of S3&K. Shadow was based on Sonic in that mural.

So, just to give a helpful nudge in the right direction (if you want it, of course) since you've just completed Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow's story is pretty much the only major multi-game arc in the entire franchise.
The full story of Shadow starts with *Sonic Adventure 2* (obviously), picks back up in *Sonic Heroes* (the very next main 3D title after Adventure 2), then completes itself with *Shadow the Hedgehog's standalone 2005 game* (which is a very confusing game but basically it's a choose-your-own-adventure with Shadow as the protagonist and all the lore is sprinkled throughout each path and each path you play through is essentially a "what if" story you create), with an extra story in *Sonic Battle* (a Game Boy Advance game) featuring Emerl (the crazy robot Shadow fought at the beginning of the Shadow Generations Dark Beginnings animation you watched). Other than that, *Shadow Generations* (which you already played and completed) is really the only other major Shadow storyline and, as good as it is, it really only gives Shadow personal closure for everything that had already happened in those other stories I mentioned.

First time playthroughs of Sonic Adventure 2 can be rough to newtime players but upon replays, the game does get/feel better when you are adjusted to the game engine, gameplay mechanics, and know what you're doing. Thinking about it, my first time playing this game was probably just as rough as yours but I still loved it (and became my favorite Sonic game at the time when I first played the GameCube port, surpassed by Sonic Generations as my favorite). It was my first 3D Sonic game after playing the 2D classic era.
My Favorite for music and story

Gerald made Shadow look like Sonic because he took inspiration of an ancient mural he saw that depicted Super Sonic saving the Master Emerald from evildoers
EDIT: Someone just told me you can see the mural in Sonic & Knuckles game for the GENESIS

Congrats on beating the game! You deserve so much respect for persevering until the end, it was genuinely inspiring to see. Also, all of your frustrations are completely normal for a first playthrough, don’t let anyone try to tell you different by saying “skill issue”. You played really well and the people that are claiming you’re bad at the game have forgotten their own first playthroughs (I say this as someone who loves SA2 and has 100% completed it).
Also, if you’re planning on playing Sonic Heroes next, just be warned that it is even more janky and tedious than this game. Hopefully the rumors about it getting a remake are true.

31:31 - If you pause here, you can see what she's talking about in full. It's in English, even. In short, Project Shadow created Biolizard, which they called Shadow. Which helps explain what's going on - Project Shadow was an iterative process, where at least two creatures were called Shadow. And Shadow was simply never told. Maybe he was even created as an adult, like a clone. So... what is Shadow's true identity?
Gerald didn't make Shadow "look like Sonic". That happened decades ago, before Sonic. There's no given reason why the both have the same powers - you'd think that might come up at some point, but the military just created someone with Chaos powers, and that happened to also happen seemingly naturally. (I'm not sure on the canonicity of Knuckles and Tails' Chaos powers.) Not that we know anything about Sonic's birth.
And obviously Sonic Team made Shadow as Sonic's shadow. But in-game it may just be coincidence.
The gameplay is very janky and inconsistent, especially compared to Shadow Generations (and the single-radar element makes the Knuckles stages a worse version of SA1's), but thankfully a fresh mind helped you out. And then it takes you an hour to beat the next stage, to no one's surprise.
Honestly surprised you thought the story ended after Hero and Dark, considering you played Sonic Adventure.
57:52 - No, that's the Ark. It's falling. That scene is highly exaggerated, though.
58:28 - Ahhh... not sure? Some sort of recorded confession before his execution? Or imprisonment? Which he programmed into the Ark after that, somehow? The timeline of the backstory is really confusing and poorly explained, and the poor localization is not helping. They tried to make something a lot more narratively complex than SA1, and people like it's core ideas, but it's also quite janky, like the rest of the game.
2:12:30 - Yes, this is why the Biolizard appeared in Shadow Generations.
And then Shadow died and totally didn't come back two years later.
The Ark is still there because they teleported it into a stable orbit that won't fall (unless you add more Emeralds or something). Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Rouge are still there, so they can't teleport it into the sun.

Truly the effect of the internet where some individuals say "peak game 10/10" and everyone starts to repeat it on a very not that good or bad game, being repeated on such a viewed media that was IGN, then when fans started to get bored, they started to go the other way around and call actually good games "bad" simply for any little reasons they can find, until something came out just because it was on the Wii... Repeating the cycle of reviewing like Adventure 2 all over again.
Anyway, good or not, I hope you keep enjoying the rest of the series or other games and never give up at the challenge (intentional or not from the hardware), congratulations.

Hey Dee, Glad you made it through this. I know it was rough but ups to you for sticking it out. On the topic of watching fan animations. SMBZ would be great for sure. But could you give Final Fantasy Sonic X a look over too? BlackDevilX, the creator, was my best friend and he passed away shortly before the year ended. He would have appreciated your retrospective of his work and all the ways he improved over time.

I'm so glad that you gave this game its final run to get the ending, Dee. Seeing your spectrum of emotions made me truly believe you should hang it up. Bcause if you don't enjoy something, it definitely shouldn't feel like you HAVE to complete it just for the fans/viewers. This, too, is my favorite Sonic game, and, to me, it really is about growing up and getting used to the jank with muscle memory for this game because my goodness is it bad sometimes. I won't defend it there lol. That first Biolizard fight defeated me for a good half a year as a kid (no joke), and the later levels in the game are MURDER on the thumbs and patience. But sometimes...SOMETIMES that jank comes back with a vengeance, and I felt that in your playthrough and could relate. And with the addition of trying to stream this game and finish in one sitting, I think it definitely had a negative effect on you with those added challenges. I feel it's a game you gotta play alone and with some time to spare with yourself to get used to it and try to attune to it. Even now when I go back to play it, I have to play it in little bits just so I don't burn myself out. I still love it, but it hasn't aged the greatest for certain lol. I've seen you play and enjoy difficult games, so seeing this comeback was quite amazing, and I'm glad you felt earning the ending was worth it. Only one way to go through life: Live and Learn! ✌ Hope you enjoy the movie all the more when you see it again! ^_^

This was amazing to see and as a big fan of the game, I definitely agree with your sentiment of the game having some TERRIBLE moments lmao. I don't like the Knuckles/Rouge stages at all. The camera sucks, controls and turning are terrible in the pc port (I'm so grateful for recent mods that came out recently), sound mixing is really off in the ports (dreamcast had some cool hardware mixing thing but mods from also last year fix it) and the voice acting is really funny in the English version due to poor direction lol. I forgot how many times Shadow and Sonic call the Finalhazard "YOU CREEP!" in the final fight and it's my favourite line now. I remember finding the Biolizard and the Last Story segment really tough in my first playthrough too, but the music is incredible so I didn't mind haha. Anyways, have a GREAT time with the Sonic reaction content, as well as the other games in the series! Also have a phenomenal New Year! I'm so excited to watch Sonic Movie 3 soon, this playthrough made me more excited since I got to see a fresh reaction to the game and story.

Definitely 06, the controls and glitches in that game are notorious for how bad they are. I don't think he'll play Shadow the Hedgehog since he did a full reaction to the story earlier this past month.

heroes is way more easy, a lot of things like grinding and homming attack become more automatic that it hurted me they made it too easy, Shadow comes the same as heroes, things control way too similar.
06 is gonna destroy him since he lack the patience, focus, reading, watching carefully surroundings and something that is gonna be worst: NOT REMEMBERING THE HABILITIES, specially since 06 got way more things to learn (including the gems) and use even if thankfully they are not necesary to go trough the game, but they help a lot and make some of the stages really easy, NOW there he is gonna learn what is real Jankiness in a game

Dear Dee Bee Geek: I am a long time and proud fan of Sonic but I was never able to finish the second Adventure game due to hardware and distribution issues, seeing you get to the end of this epic quest makes me happy just the same and I have no doubt that the future of this franchise is bright as a shooting star.
The next game you might get to play, in chronological order at least, is Sonic heroes and this one has, by far, the larger playable cast of charachters, alhough, the learning curve to go through in order to control three heroes at once in every single one of the story archs might be hard to get by and the struggle to go through it all while making sure to collect all chaos emeralds in order to get to the last story is beyond real, but not to worry, I know you're up to the task.
Anyways... I give you congrats for taking another major step in your gaming journey and I wish you the best for any future projects. Keep being awesome.

You did so well DeeBeeGeek! Took my brother and I so long as kids to beat this game!
It’s definitely janky and hard at points! My bro and I re did the game in leu of the movie, and I died so many times! Mad space got my brother so stuck and I’m yelling at him like “it’s up in the air” and he’s like “where? It’s not here!” And I had to try to not get super raging as he was raging. But we beat hero and dark before new years and we tried the last story and died a million times and gave up 😂
