John! You dug deep for this one...good job!
Glad you liked it.
I like how you clocked the vibe instantly: it has something of an 80s feel (though it came out in '79), while also having a slightly queasy, unsettling quality, mainly down to the slurring of some of the synth notes. She'd been through some very hard times when this album came out: chronic heroin addiction and alcoholism, which culminated in her being homeless for a while, sleeping rough on the streets of Soho. What you hear in that cracked, magnificent growl is the toll it all took on her voice, which you can best gauge by listening to her debut single, As Tears Go By, from 1964, which was written for her by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
I would *love* it if you reacted to Why D'ya Do It, the last song on the album of which this is the title track. It's VERY sweary, and absolutely compelling, one of the most vitriolic songs I've ever heard.
"Broken English" was the title track from her seventh studio album released in 1979, which makes its eighties vibe years ahead of its time, and partly explains why the song sounds vaguely familiar to me. Steve Winwood played keyboards on the album. She wrote The Rolling Stones song "Sister Morphine" along with Jagger and Richards and recorded a version of it in 1969 that caught heat from British authorities because of its drug references, but also, I suspect, because of sexism, because the Stones put the song on Sticky Fingers without drawing the same degree of hassle. Lately I've been digging her version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" which she recorded in 1971 but didn't release until 1985 because of record company legal hassles. I have no idea who plays on the song, but the electric guitar lines sound so Stones like it could be Richards. She can also be seen hanging out with Brian Jones and John Lennon and Yoko Ono in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus video.
I never knew Steve Winwood played keyboards on this album. This was two years before his big comeback.
You should definitely listen to more of her songs. Her cracked voice delivers so many real emotions to feel. Marianne Faithfull is so unique in that, once you hear how her younger voice sounded, her stuff from later years seems so much more profound.
The whole album is a KILLER!
Marianne the phoenix. That's not a sore throat, kind friend...
Her live album "Blazing Away" is one of the rare live albums where every song is better than the studio version. I've seen her in concert and she puts on an amazing show. She also has some impressive acting credits, including playing God on "Absolutely Fabulous."
One of kind musician and singer song writer
Ok John you came out of hiding.....lol glad your back 🥰
Hi Wake! Happy holidays!❤
@@johnneils9084 happy holidays my buddy be safe & enjoyed 🥰🥰❤️❤️💋💋
Never heard this song from her before. I liked it. I’ve only heard her version of “Wild Horses”.
"Wild Horses" is supposedly written about her. She had a bad overdose and was in hospital. Got her back to life - Jagger said "we thought we lost you" and she said "Wild horses couldn't drag me away". By the time the song came out jagger and Faithful had split up.
There are other claims for the genesis of the song - but this is one.
I remember Marianne Faithful, but I just remember one song.
She just got more and more interesting with age. Give My Love to London and Negstive Capability were beautiful albums.... Gypsy Faerie Queen and Witches Song are gorgeous
Always a good question " what are we fighting for?". Great hearing your take on this song JJ, thank you.✌️
React to time square amazing song
Agreed!
Yeahhh... it's a NO for me... she sounds a mess...
