    Things you need to know about the latest 2024 update for GTA 3 on Dreamcast:
    1) No Dreamcast emulator is capable of running this final 2024 update for Dreamcast (so far, emulator creators need to reprogram their emulators to support this version of GTA III).
    2) Only the real hardware can run this version of GTA III (as demonstrated in the video, on both the left and right sides).
    3) GTA III on Dreamcast now has full support for controllers with 2 analog sticks and 8 buttons (as seen in the video, and explained below in item 4).
    4) Since its launch, the Dreamcast was designed for a controller with 2 analog sticks and 9 buttons; however, the Dreamcast didn’t live long enough for Sega to release a second version of the controller with more analog sticks and buttons. Therefore, the GTA III update takes advantage of this, allowing for better gameplay.
    5) You can play without Motion Blur (Left Screen/Dreamcast Style) or play with Motion Blur (Right Screen/PlayStation 2 Style)... Personally, I hate Motion Blur, so I prefer the Left Screen.
    6) The game is not using the full capacity of the Dreamcast, there is still a lot of room for improvements.
    7) Although the Motion Blur simulates the PS2 version, the game is not running at 480i, but rather at 480p, which consumes more resources, as the VGA Box doesn’t work with games in 480i or 240p...
    8) The game can now be played from start to finish, that's right! From start to finish! However, this is not the final version, as the developers will continue working on the project throughout 2025, 8) further improving graphics and performance.
    9) The 2 analog sticks are truly analog.
    10) There are reflections on cars, roads (when it rains/night), a larger number of cars at the same time compared to the PS2 version, more polygons compared to the PS version... and of course, 480p, which is much better than 480i.
    I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this Dreamcast GTA III port!!! Many doubted the project, thinking the Dreamcast was weak and from the same generation as the N64.

      A quick and basic explanation of how I managed to use a controller with 2 analog sticks and 8 buttons on a real Dreamcast...
      So, many people don’t know, but there are accessories (like USB4MAPLE, BLUERETRO, etc.) that allow you to connect controllers such as Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch Pro Controller, WiiU Pro Controller, and others to your Dreamcast.
      With that, let me ask you a question: What do all these controllers have that the Dreamcast doesn’t?
      Yes, you’re correct if you said more buttons and 2 analog sticks.
      And that’s how it’s possible to use 2 analog sticks and 8 buttons on a Dreamcast! As I mentioned before, the Dreamcast was designed from the start to support a controller with 2 analog sticks and 9 buttons. However, the console didn’t live long enough for SEGA to release a second version of the controller with more buttons and an additional analog stick.
      The buttons that exist in the system's programming, but are not present on the official Dreamcast controller, include the second analog stick, the “C” button, the “Z” button, and the “D” button.
      Many of you may have seen the “C” and “Z” buttons on some third-party Dreamcast controllers, especially for fighting games, and you’ve probably thought these buttons were just front-facing mirrors of the L and R triggers, right? However, these buttons are independent, as is the “D” button and the second analog stick.
      So, what this GTA 3 update does is make use of all these Dreamcast buttons, or at least the “C” and “Z” buttons and the second analog stick.

    • @vcdecide
      @vcdecide  18 дней назад +4

      I suspect that the "D" button has nothing to do with the "D-Pad" but rather with "Dreamcast" and was very likely intended to be a button similar to the Xbox logo button found on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series controllers, or equivalent to the "PS" button on PS3, PS4, and PS5 controllers... or even the "Home" button found on Nintendo controllers (Wii U/Switch).
      It’s possible that the "D" button on the Dreamcast was a reference to the console itself and its "Spiral" logo, where the logo might have functioned as an actual button. This button might have allowed toggling between the game and an internet page, or even accessing system-level features, aligning with the Dreamcast’s focus on being an "ONLINE" console. This emphasis on online functionality was a key feature that set the Dreamcast apart from its contemporaries like the PS2 and GameCube.

    • @vcdecide
      @vcdecide  18 дней назад +5

      Another hypothesis regarding the "D" button, based on my personal analysis, is that the "D" button could have been used to toggle between the Dreamcast and the VMU screen, allowing the Dreamcast buttons to directly access the VMU screen when it was connected to the Dreamcast controller.

      PS2 runs a lot better with a lot further draw distance and less pop in. This also clearly has waaaaaay lower texture detail and is missing a lot of the more complex particle and shader effects that ran on PS2. Look at any of the signs with writing on. Crisp on PS2, just blurry on here you can barely read stuff like pay n spray or various billboards.

    • @DigiSpaceProductions
      @DigiSpaceProductions 17 дней назад +5

      @@pgr3290 The render distance is actually a good deal further than on PS2, it's just the model streaming is buggy and incomplete, so it doesnt smoothly load anything.
      And iirc when it comes to textures, they just haven't all been converted to utilize the Dreamcasts texture compression mode yet; this is still in alpha, it's just enough to play the whole game now.

    • @pgr3290
      @pgr3290 17 дней назад +3

      @@DigiSpaceProductions The problem is render distance setting (the LODs) as you are seeing is meaningless without the ability to stream texture data and geometry fast enough. So the actual distance you see everything is far far shorter than on PS2. It's a core part of the game's technology that made it possible to create a city without the pop in and low quality assets in your face. DC probably cannot do it. It cannot do it here even with lower resolution textures, way below that of the PS2's quality. It's a very stripped back game. It has to go a very long way to make the streaming work and it's honestly one thing that I have not seen improved in all the time we have seen builds the past six months. Nothing appears until you're right on top of it, which is a huge boost for the framerate. If it's even possible to stream and push the assets faster than render performance will be far lower than this.

    For so many years people would say the DC couldn't handle GTA 3, and i've always known that it could. It should have been obvious to anyone with a brain. The only limitation is the 16MB main RAM, but in many other areas the hardware is superior to the PS2. So many games look better, have higher texture res, run at a higher resolution AND in progressive scan, which is more demanding than all that early and nasty looking interlaced crap on PS2. Progressive scan @ 640x480 was completely standard on DC. Not PS2. Even extremely basic things like colours are vastly better on the DC due to it not needing to compress texture colour data and having a proper RGB output. Many DC games were doing all this before the PS2 even came out and devs were just getting to grips with the DC hardware. It literally took years before the PS2 visually started to rival the DC, and by that point it was old news and i'd moved on to PC and Xbox.

      It's a nice story but not really true. Games built for Dreamcast ran best on Dreamcast because they utilized the strengths of DC hardware. The ports were not utilizing PS2's hardware to its own strengths. However there is no Dreamcast game in equivalent genres that look as good as Metal Gear Solid 3 or Gran Turismo 4 or Final Fantasy 12 IMO. Dreamcast was designed to run fairly simple shaded games at 480p and 60FPS, to facilitate Sega's arcade ports. Sony's machine was designed to run complex shaders and particle effects DC could never do, and so heralded that future direction of more complex and dynamic environments. GTA3 was only the start of what PS2 did. Ultimately it was an early title on new hardware.

      Believe it or not, it seems Dreamcast outputs at 16 bit color with dithering. Lots of Ps2 games use 24bit or 32bit color output. Almost all Ps2 games that i have tested output more colors on screen than the same game on Dreamcast.

    • @Serial_Thriller
      @Serial_Thriller 17 дней назад

      @@jsr734 Yeah some games on DC used dithering, but not all. What i was talking about is how so many PS2 games used a CLUT (Color Lookup Table) with 8-bit indexed colours. 8-bit is just 256 colours. It wasn't always used on every texture, but it was common to see. Some games even used 4-bit (16 colours) in some areas. These 4/8-bit coloured textures were then blurred together after texture filtering is applied, which technically produced more colours on the screen, but they were still made up of just 16 or 256 colours. PS2 also used something similar to S3TC (DXT1) compression which further affected the colours. All of this was done because it only has 4MB VRAM, compared to the DC's 8MB. So on PS2 the reds look more orange, yellows look more brown and so on. It reduces colour accuracy and saturation and produces a "muddy" looking image. This is why PS2 games look washed out/dull or grey/brown in comparison to DC games. When combined with its lack of RGB output it makes this problem worse and you end up with a significantly less appealing blurry muddy image. Even my Saturn had sharp vibrant colours due to it's excellent RGB/SCART. So coming to the PS2 after years or seeing sharp and colourful games really put me off that console.

    There has always been failed consoles but i truly feel the dreamcast was way ahead of its time most ports to the console were amazing and i feel it was gratley inpacted by a few things firstly the failure of saga's previous consoles. Saga in the 80s and early 90s was possibly the biggest console conpany around. The sega megadrive and mastersystem were massive sucesses but it wasnt untill saga realsed the saturn that was extremely powerful for the time but was rushed out with only a few games and very limited developer support in regards to kits to utilise the saturn duel cpu this left limited games at realse and also substanderd ports of ps1 games that with the cost being nearly 100 made most people switch to the ps1. When the dreamcast was realsed 3 years later it was a quantum leap in tech and tje games were amazing but by that time saga had lost the respect of most gamers and sony had realsed detailes of the ps2 so again sagas sales were inpacted it still sold because the console was amazing but no were near what the ps1 or even megadrive had done. But i think the biggest thing for the dramcsst was the pirate scene when hackers raalised how easy it was to make pirates games it doomed the cojsole commercialy as half the people were getting copys. That being said to me dreamcast is my favourite console off all time and alot of its games still hold up today i would love to see indi devlopers crate new games for the console as i know they would be able to get so much more out of it then what we got.
