Not a bad top 10, but it gets pretty week very fast after that. I do think it's kind of early because there are several players (I think Pettersson, Hischier, Yamamoto, for instance) can have much stronger credentials in a year or two. But after Anderson, I don't see anyone who looks to be more than a NHL regular. Maybe the Buffalo goalie because, who knows with goalies.
I didnt realise just how well my sens did in the 2017 draft despite picking late. Formenton in the second, Batherson in the fourth, picking up Norris and Brannstrom via trade. Not bad
Considering Ottawa fans were upset that the team got rid of their 4th overall pick that year, they ended up with one of the best hauls of the draft - Norris, Batherson, Formenton and Brannstrom. I know two were through trade, but still impressive
In 2024 this redraft didn't age all that well. Norris has been an injury case, Formenton will never play in the league again, Brannstrom isn't an impact player. Too bad for the Sens outside of Batherson.
13:55 - i'm gonna disagree slightly here. i don't necessarily dispute the point about GMs being afraid to draft goalies early because of the relative unpredictability of any particular goalie prospect. that said, because *everyone* delays drafting goalies, i think the bigger reason GMs delay drafting goalies is asset management. because every GM waits on drafting a goalie, it would be better asset management to pick a different player if you're confident the goalie you want will still be around when you pick next.
I think GM's, especially high in the draft when they team stinks, don't like taking goalies because by the time the guy is NHL ready, that GM probably won't be there. They think, "Why should I pick a goalie for the guy who takes my place when I get fires?"
Avalanche getting Makar was sweet justice after not getting the #1 pick after they were the worst team in the NHL by a solid 20 points the year before.
Absolutely insane disrespect to Thomas. He’s just so much better than everyone ahead of him except Robertson. Nick Suzuki???? Thomas played 300 less minutes and our scored him substantially while being PP2.
I will agree id personally have him higher but Pettersson and Robertson are the 2 battling for the best forward in this draft atm. 5 years from now maybe Thomas is the best but rn he is like 3rd-4th.
@@jacobneron1444 the stats aren’t on your side. Maybe if you’re projecting a career outlook but current stats show Thomas as a top 5 playmaker in the league.
Please do 2015 redraft! It has proven to be one of the best drafts in a while (then again I’m pretty young and don’t remember too many before 2012). Just an idea, as I think it’s produced some solid steals as well as busts (like Boston blowing 2/3 first round picks 😵).
I remember all the hype around Nolan Patrick, sucks to see how his career turned out. But no doubt, Makar is definitely the best pick from the draft. I remember even watching him in the AJHL when the Brooks Bandits would play in Grande Prairie and I was kinda confused why Joe Sakic picked him. But, turns out it worked it out well for them. I mean really people judged it because AJHL is only Junior A so, a bit off from any of the CHL leagues
I think something that warrants some consideration in redraft scenarios like this is timeline. It's easy to say knowing Makar becomes the best player he would go number 1, but in the moment, armed with all the future knowledge, does NJ actually pull the trigger on a number 1 overall pick that isn't coming to the NHL for 2 more years?
Maybe I'm bias but I am taking Suzuki>Petterson...Watched a ton of both players over the last couple years and Petterson was undoubtedly better out of the gate and is flashier but Suzuki has developed better and is more consistent and when he rarely isn't producing points the rest of Suzukis game stays great while Petterson seems to struggle all around when he isn't producing. Obviously can't go wrong either way and I do extremely appreciate how even as a Bruins fan Shannon gives Suzuki the respect he deserves. Awesome video as always! (BTW Montreal is my favourite team and Vancouver is my 2nd as I live in BC)
Pettersson has had a higher PPG compared to Suzuki in every season he has played. Pettersson's lowest season PPG was (0.8) and Suzuki's highest has been (0.75). And Pettersson is a very solid 2 way player. He helped turn around Vancouvers PK and continues to be dangerous at intercepting and stealing pucks. Who knows who is better when all is said and done but right now I think Pettersson is handsdown top forward from 2017 draft.
As an admittedly extremely biased NJ Devils fan, I would take Hischier over Suzuki any day of the week. Hischier has been more productive offensively and has been the go-to player the Devils use in key defensive situations against other teams' top line.
Enjoy these but prefer to see where they were drafted originally on the board even though you mentioned it for a bunch of players - just my preference heh. Also, would you include someone undrafted like Alex Burrows in the year he was "supposed" to be drafted in a redraft video if you did more historical ones?
I was so pissed when we picked 4th, only had 1 #1 pick in franchise history "Mac) and we'd had a god awful season... #4 pic helped win us a cup 5 years later, I'm finnnnnne now lol
I was happy with the pick, pissed that we dropped to 4th after that heart wrenching season. I cannot find it anywhere, but I remember hearing/seeing that Avs management said they would have picked Makar 1st, 2nd or 3rd as well.
After enduring a miserable 45pt season, it really felt like the hockey gods were adding insult to injury when the Avs dropped to 4th in the lottery...only to select Makar with that pick. Funny how that worked out.
With the 27th pick in the 2017 the flyers have traded this pick for the second pick owned by the flyers and they selected Nolan Patrick again just for icing on the cake! WE GOT HIM! WE GOT OUR GUY!
The only glaring issue I have here is that Ferraro is way too low there - I'd have him between Necas and Formenton. Rest of the order makes sense. All three of Texier, Lily and Geekie I think are a little lower than they ought to be too imo but it's sort of a personal opinion with those last 10-15 picks over who you think looks good and still has potential.
I'd love to see you re-do the 2016 draft only include every round instead of just the 1st round. I think it's safe to say Laine and Dubois wouldn't be 2nd and 3rd anymore especially when you look at players like Debrincat and Fox who went in the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively. Matthews would still be 1st overall no doubt but you could make an argument for Tkachuk, Debrincat and Fox going at 2 and 3.

Crazy how many current Ottawa Senators are on that board. What a great pick Drake Batherson was, I can't believe that he was still available so late in the draft.
At this point I feel like Nico Hischier is underrated, I am not saying his worth 1st pick, but he is really good 2 way C, there is no way I would take Nick Suzuki over Nico
Suzuki is already a top 10 defensive forward in the league (according to JFresh's model) on a god awful Habs team and is pretty good offensively as well. I think you underrate Suzuki here.
@@TheBestKiller28 Dont get me wrong, suzuki is good but no way he is top 10, that being said I would personally argue Hischier being near that list, but I quess its objective
Suzuki easy goes in the top 10
@@hereis44more It's not objective tho, it's statistic and Hischier wasn't on it. It's a model made with a lot of different factors, but hey if you want to take opinion instead of stats it's ok I guess...
@@hereis44more He's top 10 in this draft. Look how weak it gets after 10.
As a Blues fan this hurt to watch, I would take Thomas at 4
Yeah Thomas at 10 i don’t agree with it
I think he'll rank a lot higher in a few years, if he stays healthy.
I can't believe he's at 10. Thomas is probably the best setup man in the league right now, and this past year he started scoring goals too.
Excited to see what he can do this upcoming season. Still so young and so much potential, amazing set up man just wait til he scores more goals
@FaTMother Shannon watches every game 😅
This draft is looking more and more impressive. Interesting to see in 7-8 years how it really paned out.
I think you got it mostly right 👍. I would've had Thomas up at 6, Ferraro at 13, and Liljegren around 16-18 personally, but you've seen most of these players more than me so I'll trust you on those guys.
Hope your allergies gets better soon. Great video as always! Sorry that I make some suggestions, I'm no expert. Appreciate a lot your channel.
Thanks for including the whole draft class instead of just redrafting the original first round
THG absolute beast
I wonder where Vilardi would go in this re-draft now after finally breaking out this season
I would put him where yamamoto is I think
This draft was a LOT better than I remembered. It makes sense that this draft took a while for guys to figure it out
You’re hockey knowledge is great, you killed this re draft!
Hischier number 2. I will not stand for this slander
Def not 2nd as a hardcore devs fan I think he's 4 or 5
I’m a devils fan and he is 4th at the highest
Miro is a god, you just don’t get it
Biased Devils fan, but I don't think Nico comes out of the top 5.
Maybe the Buffalo goalie because, who knows with goalies.
liljegren is due to breakout this year
Still waiting for an '04 redraft
I didnt realise just how well my sens did in the 2017 draft despite picking late. Formenton in the second, Batherson in the fourth, picking up Norris and Brannstrom via trade. Not bad
Gabe villardi is having a big year I'd like to see this at the end of this season
how is Ukko pekka luukkonen a 1st round pick but Stuart skinner isn't??
Considering Ottawa fans were upset that the team got rid of their 4th overall pick that year, they ended up with one of the best hauls of the draft - Norris, Batherson, Formenton and Brannstrom. I know two were through trade, but still impressive
They lost the 4th pick in 2019 not 17
Yeah they drafted Bowen byram
Must be nice to play for the Avalanche
As An Avalanche fan I’m quite happy that these were not the Real results! Go Avs!!!
Avalanche getting Makar was sweet justice after not getting the #1 pick after they were the worst team in the NHL by a solid 20 points the year before.
2015 also please mr. hockey guy. great staff as usual. this is very high quality channel. very professional.
Absolutely insane disrespect to Thomas. He’s just so much better than everyone ahead of him except Robertson. Nick Suzuki???? Thomas played 300 less minutes and our scored him substantially while being PP2.
Lol, Thomas is overrated lmao. He is at the position he deserves. Everyone in front of him is better.
I will agree id personally have him higher but Pettersson and Robertson are the 2 battling for the best forward in this draft atm. 5 years from now maybe Thomas is the best but rn he is like 3rd-4th.
@@josha5266 he’s much better than Nick freaking Suzuki that’s for sure
@@jacobneron1444 the stats aren’t on your side. Maybe if you’re projecting a career outlook but current stats show Thomas as a top 5 playmaker in the league.
Please do 2015 redraft! It has proven to be one of the best drafts in a while (then again I’m pretty young and don’t remember too many before 2012). Just an idea, as I think it’s produced some solid steals as well as busts (like Boston blowing 2/3 first round picks 😵).
Another great one for the Avs snagging Mikko at 10.
Crazy to see what necas is doing this year now
I think something that warrants some consideration in redraft scenarios like this is timeline. It's easy to say knowing Makar becomes the best player he would go number 1, but in the moment, armed with all the future knowledge, does NJ actually pull the trigger on a number 1 overall pick that isn't coming to the NHL for 2 more years?
Sorry, but not enough if a HEALTHY Nico Hischier, to determine where he goes. Let’s redo this in three years.
He is overrated as fuck and they regret making him captain, Hughes should've been
"So who would Vegas have traded" i spit my drink out, lol
Robo is better
These videos are so under rated. A 2003 redraft would be fun, if not already done.
Absolutely love these!
As an admittedly extremely biased NJ Devils fan, I would take Hischier over Suzuki any day of the week. Hischier has been more productive offensively and has been the go-to player the Devils use in key defensive situations against other teams' top line.
As a Columbus fan, I like Texier, but he is often injured. He's missed 87 of 208 possible games (42%) since he made his debut
Not a Columbus fan but I can’t get enough of that guys shootout goals. Some of the fastest hands in the league.
It is crazy how Dallas got a number one goal, forward, and defenceman all in one draft lol.
Enjoy these but prefer to see where they were drafted originally on the board even though you mentioned it for a bunch of players - just my preference heh. Also, would you include someone undrafted like Alex Burrows in the year he was "supposed" to be drafted in a redraft video if you did more historical ones?
3 in the top 13 are now with Ottawa. Thas not bad eh.
Pretty crazy that 6 of the top 13 are with 2 teams
Imagine drafting Cale Makar at 4th. What unbelievable luck
Has any hockey player ever been traded for themselves ?
You think I’m crazy see harry chiti in baseball
I was so pissed when we picked 4th, only had 1 #1 pick in franchise history "Mac) and we'd had a god awful season...
#4 pic helped win us a cup 5 years later, I'm finnnnnne now lol
I was happy with the pick, pissed that we dropped to 4th after that heart wrenching season. I cannot find it anywhere, but I remember hearing/seeing that Avs management said they would have picked Makar 1st, 2nd or 3rd as well.
Hey random question but have you done a video in Dan Cleary?
Always a special vid when that Canucks Jersey comes out .
I got 5 players on your redraft out of that draft in my 2nd ever Fantasy draft!
Nico disrespect is unreal :(
After enduring a miserable 45pt season, it really felt like the hockey gods were adding insult to injury when the Avs dropped to 4th in the lottery...only to select Makar with that pick. Funny how that worked out.
With the 27th pick in the 2017 the flyers have traded this pick for the second pick owned by the flyers and they selected Nolan Patrick again just for icing on the cake! WE GOT HIM! WE GOT OUR GUY!
Makar is the only player in this draft better than Robert Thomas.
If you have time would love to see some older redrafts before 2005
Miro is the best defensive defenseman in the league and his offense is good in the playoffs too
I'd love to see you re-do the 2016 draft only include every round instead of just the 1st round.
First draft year with Vegas in the league and even with THG Redraft it doesn't matter that every pick in the first round Vegas had is no longer playing with them lol
Missed why pens didn't pick. Anybody fill me in?
Can you bring back the draft review series?
I think I would have moved Hischier up higher, like Aves or Canucks level.
Not having the Hischier disrespect, 100% better than suzuki, and maybe norris 🤷♂️
