- In this video I wanted to build some confidence in the Goldwing community with doing a maintenance repair such as replacing the engine coolant. Although the body pieces appear endless and impenetrable. They are well crafted to come about hundreds if not thousands of times in their life.
So, roll up your sleeves, throw some of my exclusive Gloveworks HD disposables on and bring your bike up to speed! ENJOY!

I wanted to say thanks to Cody for the great video. Followed it and was able to drain my coolant and get everything put back together.
Keep up the great work on your great videos.
I bought this very year and color bike couple weeks ago. Replaced my 1500. Thanks for sharing...will be very helpful when I get ready to do this. AND...love you attention to detail. Wish you were in my area!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this; I used it to change the coolant on my 2012 and it was very clear. Success!
We get slammed in the Spring and often, videos go by the way side. I totally understand. My videos lack in the Spring too. Great to see a new video from you Brother Cody! Cheers!! Zip~

Thank you!
Top man, well explained, 🇬🇧👍
Thanks for showing me I don't have to remove the evap canister or the bracket as is told to me in the manual ...
Thank you.
Thank you for explain. .. what kind of coolant can I change
Cody, can you do a instructional video on air filter replacement?
Great video …. Off to the garage…😁
Hi Cody, Did Honda lengthen the bottom of the lower cowl. I have an '05 GL and have never had to remove the cowl. Thanks for taking the time to pass on knowledge.
Great tutorial. i'd let yo work on my honda!
I'm going to try this. I just removed the lower cowl to bleed the clutch. Thanks for showing me that I put it back on wrong .😀 I have a 2015 that I punctured the overflow bottle putting the bike on a trailer last year. The dealer replaced the bottle, and I'm pretty sure they put green coolant back in there. Do I need to do that distilled water flush you were talking about? Also, when you do that, do you fill the whole system, including the overflow bottle with the distilled water?
Gracias por tu vídeo , es excelente, puedes decirme cual es la medida de la llave para soltar el tornillo de vaciado de agua?
Thanks for your video, it is excellent, can you tell me what is the size of the key to loosen the water drain screw?
greetings from Spain
Whew the '01-10 is so much easier, Drain plug right by the oil filter you dont need to remove cowl or anything and raidiator cap right under storage box easily removed..👍
Great video, my speedometer on my gl1800 2012 stopped working while riding in Europe you think something came loose from rough roads..?!
What’s up Cody!! Support comment keep up the videos!!
Thanks James!! Your support is appreciated brother!
TheMotorcycleMD I do when I can bro!!
Sorry, I would like to know the location of the heat sensor nut for Honda GL 1800 engine
Cody. Great video. you just verified to me that my coolant is okay and when it needs replaced, I will bring to you. Damn, why did honda make it so hard (have to pull so many parts) to replace coolant?
Because the all the internals are literally covered in plastic!
If you think the cowl is difficult… try changing the air filter !!!!!
😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
i dont even think you would need to take the fairing lower off. even then i think id just dremel an area in the fairing lower plastic so that i could drain the coolant with out taking it off. plus it would give me better access to get the oil filter wrench in there.
Maybe someone can help me out. 96 Honda Shadow Ace. New charged battery, good compression 125-135 psi, spark on all plugs bright blue, very clean carb with new gaskets, still won't start. And yes the gas is on, in neutral, kickstand up, clutch in, killswitch to run. When I tried to use starter fluid on the carbs it shot the fluid back at me. Timing issue?
Excellent video. I have a 2014 Honda Goldwing Valkyrie 1800C. I took it to a Honda dealership for a coolant flush..I bought it new in 2016, I keep her very very clean.. When I got it home, I noticed the right side lower cowel was loose, the left side was tight, it's never have the cowel removed before. I haven't taken her back yet, babysitting duties, but will this Saturday. I haven't looked at the 3 screws yet or the 2 pop pins at the top. What would be your recommendation to me to look at first to figure out why it's loose, before I go back to the dealership.
Thanks a bunch...
Cody, this vid just popped up and I decided to watch since I may ditch my Harley and get a GW. I like your style. I know that GW has a crap load of plastic body and it somewhat intimidates me. Are you located on the west coast? Should I get a GW I'd like for you to work on it. I started out on a Honda (owned 3. A 175,350 and a 71 750), so I might end up with a GW. I'm subscribing so I can binge on your vids. Again great content.
Thanks Freddie! Ditch the Harley and get that wing! “Recommend any of the 1800s after 2006!” Very little maintenance and it will take you anywhere! 👍🏻
My 08 No removal of that pesky lower cowl
6 in extension and 5/16 socket got to drain no problem
Where's the coolant fill on a 2003 Goldwing GL 1800 located
How do you check the trannnyforaglodwing 1800model2003
What can you do if your aux does not work. I think I plugged a bad flash drive in and the aux has not work since. I have a 2017 GL 1800 navigation, audio system
great video. and just in time i am doing mine this weekend. how about and air filter change on a gl1800 goldwing? that can prove to be fun.
AH this infamous, GL air filter. When I get another one in. Ill see if I can record the sea of parts and harness removals lol
what is you best time doing the air filter change? by myself taking my sweet time and being very sure to not leave anything disconnected like the radio antenna 2.5 hrs. another great project is adjusting the slack out of the cruise control cable. not as bad as the air filter but still a lot of plastic has to come off. keep the videos coming.
i actually done that on my 08, through a youtube video. not too bad. patience is the key. and time, obviously. good luck!
very time consuming. i am waiting for winter so i don't fried my brains out. i liver in very sunny florida.
Was that a Carnival Cruise Line Towle I saw you using for a parts pad?
What about if no coolant come out. it look full. And nothing come out. ?
Is there a big difference between a 2012 and a 2010 which I own?
So do we need 3 bottles of coolant?
FYI... There is no need to remove the cowl and the sealing washer is copper, not brass.
Nice video but you didn't need to take that fairing off,at least not on my 2015 f6b.the drain is by the oil filter
changed my coolant and now getting hot not sure what happen any body ?? its the right kind of coolant will air in system cause it to get hot or show hot ??
You have air in the system, you need to burp your radiator and add coolant.
What about changing it on a 2003 Goldwing 1800 is it the same where the bill is high school tonight are the field located
What about the changing it on a 2003 Goldwing 1800 where is the coolant fill is it the same Spanx
Sir I need your halp plz
Nicely presented video…however an Airlift 550000 would make this coolant change so much easier.
How do you re-install a seat on a 2014 goldwing. Talk about insane!
Thanks very much for the clear video. I am wondering if doing my oil and filter at the same time would be good timing. Since I can squeak out the filter without taking the cowl off I am wondering if I can squeak out the coolant drain bolt while the filter is out. I plan to use the 8mm, a universal joint with an extension might work. I have taken the cowl off once to do the clutch fluid change but hoping I won't have to if not too hard. Has anyone else tried this with the oil filter off?
that's only problem with gold-wings .. very difficult to work on and loaded with unnecessary rubbish compared to a "normal" bike , its like a car with two wheels lol ... i would like to get one and strip it all off and streetfigher it .. think it would look far better and quite likely handle better too
👍
Can you tell me why you were wearing gloves at all during this?
I deal with chemicals 9 hours a day. Anytime I can keep them off my hands, I’m game. I’ve seen techs fingers in the business with over 30 years of damage. I’ll pass.
Thanks. I wondered if you had a allergy or something.
Can someone answer my question real quick. I took off my pod filters and used my hand to block off the intake from each carb, all but one spit out fuel. when I put my finger on the air mixture screw on the one that doesn’t spit out fuel the engine won’t bog down like the others do. Whats wrong with that one carburetor? The slide does go up though when I block it, just no fuel comes out and it doesn’t bog the engine
Hi sir who are you
🎅 👍
There is no need to remove the front lower cowl. This link shows how to drain the system without splashing or loosing a drop. Mouse click each photo thumbnail to enlarge:
gl1800riders.com/forums/members/22132-gatorwing-albums-coolant-drain.html
so, you only put two bottles in?
Me first comment yes!
For the win 🙌
TheMotorcycleMD I'm a weiner 🏁😀
So he only put in 3 quarts I was told it should take 4. I put the 4 th in the overflow was in the marks but at the top indicator Went riding. Fine at 60 mph. Ur went through a fast food place and it overheated and coolant came out. I bet I need to suck out fair amount of fluid from the overflow. Any thoughts welcome?
coolant once a year or every 16-24k? get serious. that is WAY overkill. my '12 has 61k on original coolant with nary an issue. I'll probably change it sometime this year (average of 10k/year).
Good video. I was expecting to see all the way, including the plastic bottle level at the left side, but didn't happen. Than, what's up with the gloves?
I always work with my bare hands, and I don't have any issues getting dirty hands.
Gloves = waste of money 💰 for us.
In your case was donated
As you get older, you get wiser. I never wore gloves either, but since my 9 to 5 job is in a "white collar" setting, I can't be going into the office with black fingernails, and cuts and abrasions all over my mitts! I didn't used to wear a helmet either, but now, I always do. Same with riding jackets, and riding gloves. I even take rain gear along with me now, when I go on long-distance rides!
"No more wasting your time," goes to ten second intro video and then a commercial, then a one minute product placement for fucking gloves! Gloves are for cold weather, guys. How can your fingertips and palms do their jobs when they are covered by gloves? How can they feel stuff?
No reason to get upset man. It’s a free video... your welcome.
Is it free? You made me pay for it with my attention on commercials. That's what commercials are: an exchange of my valuable time for an effort to warp my sentiments into buying something I didn't want and I don't need. I get you are trapped in the capitalist system by RUclips and the US system. Don't make me a part of your sick cycle.
dude.... take a chill pill or 7.
HAHAHAHAHA. I took your time..? That you gave away so freely. I didn't force you to waste your time. You did that on your own. So who is trapped? As you continue to throw away your time. Both reading this and watching more and more videos and more and more commercials.
I can feel that you are a generally un-happy person. I am sorry about that.
Have a great day man!
Too much talking really.
Great video
