  • Aria sent this Bass out with cheap Roundwound strings. Why. ??? It sounded and played awful. Then I put on a set of Fender Flatwounds and it's a million times better.

Damn fine playing! I picked up one of those in a music store the other day while I was waiting for my freshly set up bass to be brought out. I dug it, if it had had flatwounds on it I might have bought it, though I need another bass like a hole in the head, especially a fretless acoustic. I have a fondness for Aria guitars, I have an old FA-70 L5 CES clone.

Yes, a shame Aria cant put flatwounds on. And if they made the bridge adjustable it would be a Big Seller for them. I wonder who designs for them? They should ask players before releasing it.

Never crossed my mind to be honest. I have a bottle neck for 6 strings but it's been in a box for years, unused. I'm still learning normal fretless playing and will be for a long time. Thanks for watching.

Love the video! I’m new to bass and wanting to get something that sounds as close to an upright as possible. Would nylon flatwound strings do a job for this with the Aria? And I saw you mention about non adjustable bridge - is the action quite high?

    • @miket1783-j5j
      @miket1783-j5j  Месяц назад

I'm sure that nylon flatwound would help get closer to a double Bass sound. This bass is very bright. However, there is a panel of e/q (bass-middle-treble) as well as presence, volume (and tuner) on the side of the Bass for extra tone. And there is a lot of tone. The action is about 6mm at the 12th fret position, I tune down a semitone which helps. It would be easy to file the bridge, it is just a length of thin plastic. For the price (I paid less than £250) this is a good instrument to have. I have tried some acoustic Basses in the £750 range and there's not much difference. I hope this info helps, and many thanks for your comments.

@@miket1783-j5j I really appreciate you taking the time to reply in length! I’m not going to be able to try it out at the shop so it’s so useful to have these sorts of questions answered. £300 is about as much as I’d want to spent so reassuring to hear it punches above its weight. My only other slight concern is the size (the depth, in particular) but presumably it’s necessary to be loud enough acoustically. I think it’s available in medium scale and full scale, although I confess I don’t really know how much difference that makes and whether it should affect my decision….

@@60SecondsofSomaCosmos In my demo the Bass is going through an Eden Bass combo otherwise my budget mobile wouldnt be able to record it. Acousticly I'm sure the big body helps make the big sound. There are other demo's of this Bass on You Tube, maybe one or more are unplugged. I'm sure Aria only make this size fretless. I got mine online, without trying, but there's always a return policy. Good luck with your choice.

Yes.It's going through an Eden 2x10 combo, may be a slight reverb but nothing expensive. New strings make it bright but it still sounds good now with the same ones. Cheers for looking.

Hi there. Thanks for the video. I recently stumbled across this bass online. Do you still own it? Did you ever make a follow up video after you put the flat wound strings on it? All the videos I’ve seen seem to be with the manufacturers round wound strings on them and sound horrible. Wondering how flat wound or tape wound might sound. Thanks.

    • @miket1783-j5j

Hi Jonathan. The Bass in the video has Fender Flatwound String 9050L (045-100) Stainless Steel, 739050403 which were about £34. On my Fender and Ibanez Basses I use D'Addario ECB82 Chromes Flatwound Long Scale 50-105. They are about £50 a set so I havent tried them on the Aria yet. But it sounds OK with the Fenders. I have no intention of selling even though its more of a novely and not used much. I never made a film with the original strings. They are currently holding up a greenhouse. Thanks for passing by and I hope the info helps. Buy the Bass and change the strings.

@@miket1783-j5j I'm very tempted, I just found out these existed, they look too cool, the price ain't too bad but they look nicely finished, and they have a fretted medium version and a guitar as well... now wouldn't that be a sweet living room & practice trio.

    • @miket1783-j5j

For the price it is good, although like I said before you need to change the strings as soon as possible. And Yes, it would be a great practice set up.

Hi, they are......"Fender Flatwound String Set For Electric Bass-9050L (045/100) - Stainless Steel, 739050403" (Full description). They are for Bass obviously but there is no mention of whether they are mainly for a electric or acoustic. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. Mike.

Yes, I use D'Addario 50-105 on electric basses but as the Aria is a budget bass (about £240. I think) I put cheaper flatwound on it. But you are so right about Flats Pierre.

Your the man they've been looking for. I know a band who only do cover versions. Yep they only do crowd pleasers and play for local chavs and Football Trevors so guanteed there will be the odd one or two Oasis song in there somewhere. Just smile and pretend your enjoying it and think of the money cos I think all your likely to get around here are Jukebox on legs. The competition is fierce.
I don't think there are any bands playing their own music around here anymore?. TBH I don't think there are any bands at all. As for venues? Things are on hold for a bit due to lockdown but I was told yesterday it won't be long now. You won't be asked to do any requests. Unless your specifically asked to do one. This one's for that knucklehead in the bar with the Oasis t shirt on. Hey supersonic. Mines a gin and tonic. Beam me out of here Scotty! 😆
