130,000 Folks living in the Villages, and about 5 were profiled. Not a great representation. I have friends that live there, and they love it. I have visited a few times, and I had a blast. Golf was fun, the bars are busy. I am considering living there myself. I thought this film was very depressing.
Like I said in the vid...you have to look at it like a movie about anyplace USA. But yes depressing in some ways. I would like to do a follow up on the characters though. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
I almost skipped this video, glad I didn't, now I want to see it, but can't let wife see it, she's not sold yet, we want to live on our boat in summer in Michigan and be south or west in winter.
I watched the movie and to me The Villages was just a back drop to a glimpse into the lives of 4 people encountering and coping with difficult situations that most will encounter similar situations in their own lives which is a part of aging and no community can provide immunity from those situations. Life happens the good and the not so good no matter where you live.
I guess we were right on the intent of the movie as I just watched The Villages Newcomers interview with Lance. And the characters are real people for those who are wondering. Melody who has a TV channel ran into Dennis with his van.😊
Yes, I saw that. Lance (director) contacted me but I have not gotten back to him yet. WOuld be interesting to see how he's doing out in LA...it's a crazy town. I was wondering if Dennis stayed in or moved onto better feeding grounds. He is a character no doubt. Here is a subscription link if you like. Thanks for contributing and the update. I agree with everything you said! Just visited the villages and while it’s definitely a different way of life I saw much more diversity as far as age goes and obviously just in general. It seemed like a lot of younger retirees as well. I enjoyed my visit. Didn’t see anything too crazy at all. Kind of weird. Kind of like Pleasantville or something. It’s definitely for people who want to still be active and social. Nothing wrong with that :)
I was in Katie Bells one night last year visiting friends who live in the Villages When all of a sudden two guys, well in their 70's, got into a fist fight over a woman. She was the object of their affection. They were both on the downside of life with little money or security in their personal life. She apparently had a few bucks to her name. They were fighting for a Lady that is known in those parts as a potential "Nurse with a Purse" A Lady to provide for a guy in his old age. After witnessing it It was a pretty sad commentary on some seniors life. This Dennis fellow in the film reminds me of one of these characters.
@@RustyNelson I thought it pitiful that two guys who have lived this long have nothing to show for it, and need to become grifters. Another sad commentary is that a lot of seniors today rely on social security to survive.
I had already watched the movie. I'm almost 68 and aging is not easy. I agree with you that the people in the movie could and are living everywhere. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
True, after all, millions of people are living in their twilight years all over America. TV offers many chances to improve yourself physically if you so desire. Getting more physical will be a positive thing to prolong one's life. We all know that but some of us choose to be couch potatoes, or are forced to be so, as life gets challenging in our aging years. But opportunities to be more active are great in TV. It's why I yearn to live there.
Yes that is true. But even for the people that are not physically active there are so many things to do. I saw pages and pages of groups that even couch potatoes can gettogether and do. You just have to take the first step. Does not have to be a big one. Small steps. Wish you the best and hope things work out for you and I see you if you make the move.
@@RustyNelson I haven’t checked out all of the groups but I’ve heard about some of them. Sounds like there is a club or group for anything you can imagine.
Rusty, I think you are spot on about this movie. After watching the trailer, I was convinced that this was some sort of mis-representation of the Villages. However, my wife and I watched it on Prime and came to the same conclusions as you did in your video here. We actually enjoyed the movie. We also enjoy and appreciate your videos as we are in the initial stages of planning our retirement (hopefully in two years or so). We will probably take our first Lifestyle visit this upcoming January (want to experience the crowds). Thanks for sharing your experiences as it helps us in our planning.
@@RustyNelson We did not get to experience the crowds because it was unusually cold and rainy the week that we went. However, our Villages Real Estate agent took us through a very large number of houses, so we have a better idea of what we would like. We plan on coming back for a second lifestyle visit this August to experience the extreme heat and humidity (want to be sure we can deal with it). We will hopefully be able to play some golf and pickleball during that time also. We currently live in Southern MD, on a peninsula that juts out into the Chesapeake bay, so it's quite hot and humid here in the summer months also.

Rusty, thanks for your review of the movie. I saw it and was a little perturbed by it. In my opinion, I felt just like you did. This should not be portrayed as a movie about the Villages but one about growing old and the journey that some people find themselves in. Dennis in the movie should not even be portrayed as a Villager. He is not. He seems to drift from city to city. I think someone mentioned in the comments section of the trailer that he has been chased out of their business in the Villages several times. I think someone mentioned that he was an actor in California years ago. Although I do not live in the Villages, thinking about it though, based on all I have seen on youtube from those who do live there, there aren’t any that I have heard who are not happy with TV. Even with some of the stories about crimes happening in and around TV, what city within a 40 mile radius in America will not have crime? You would be hard pressed to find any. Most of what I hear about crimes there is usually in the older areas. Just my thoughts.
I had a very uneasy feeling about it when I started watching but then realized that it was not a hit piece on TV but rather a movie about some people that live in TV. Once I got to that point I began to enjoy the characters. And yes as you can tell I was not fond of Denis but rather enjoyed the character as a movie person. Problem is there are people out there that are just like that. THanks a bunch for the comments and stopping by.
More to come! Took some time off for a move up here in PA. Other side of town. These things take a while to do the way I do them. The next one may take a little more thought. More than just things I did or did not like the more I think about it. Just a matter of getting it all on a video. More of an introspective that came to light by watching the movie.
You were correct! Just watched it and it is the characters story not about the Villages! Like your in-depth analysis. Certainly can tell you have a background in film!
Thanks for that! Yes, I think the people that jumped on me about not living there and doing a review had not even seen the movie. Once you see it, you know that it's a story about people. Unfortunately!!!!!! people that have not been to TV or have not seen the movie will think that the movie portrays a "true" village lifestyle. I do not feel that way at all. But that's me. I'm going down in March and look forward to learning more.
I love to see films by young filmmakers. The perspectives on all different lifestyles are fresh and give insights to those differences between generations that we strive to understand every day.
Yes I spent some time working in Hollywood so it's fun to see for sure. Unfortunately some folks are a little blinded by living IN the villages and are not as open minded. All the best Kerstin.
Hi, I was down there last month for the lifestyle visit. All I can say is, why haven't they planned a Villages Public transit system? So, nobody worries about drinking and golf cart driving? Ha! Because that's what's happening there. And just try to use Uber. The Uber app didn't have my Atwood address in their GPS system. So, no go there either. The lack of traditional online mapping was strange and frustrating for me. I thought you might want to mention that in your next video. I was hearing the buzz about this movie while I was there too. I'll check it out. Thanks for the breakdown and advice before watching.
Never thought of that. Yes I can imagine as fast as they build it would be hard for the Uber folks to catch up. How did your visit go besides the Uber problem. I think most people are really into the Golf car thing. Maybe somebody should start a Golf car uber down there if they don't already have something like that. Anybody know?
@@RustyNelson Well, it was good enough that I booked a month rental in April to stay. Specifically for the purpose of checking out moving there permanently. And on top of that I thought was great! Back to the transportation issue. I'm from L.A, and we cannot live without Uber or Lyft. It just seemed odd that since it is such a new community that they would have thought about moving people around that big huge 55 mile square foot place. I would have made sure it was part of the planning.
I lived in Marina del Rey for 20 years and yes the Uber thing is well and alive there. I never really checked into it but will as I'm going down in March.
Hey William what is it that you do regarding public transportation. To tell you truth I do not know much about it at this time. Maybe a good video to do for people. THanks for your contribution. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3orJrgp
@@RustyNelson I was thinking along the lines of a monorail being built that picks you off at a large parking lot or something and takes you from to the squares or to markets and the Dr.'s office or the Hospital. Or, set it up like the place I work in now, Leisure World Seal Beach. They have an on-call bus that picks you up and drops you off to various places within the community. It's great for the nondrivers there. I guess the community has grown so fast and so big they just never thought of it.
I’m really looking forward to your next video and have to watch the film. I am currently planning to move to the Villages within the next couple of years.
Hope you enjoy it! Just have to take it with a grain of salt and realize it is not about the Villages but about some people that live in the Villages. Would have been fun to be a fly on the wall when the developers saw the movie. I'd also love to meet up with the Characters. Get a big bag of popcorn and you favorite drink and realize it is just for fun. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by.

Amazing video on your thoughts...yes it’s a movie about the characters in TV....now I think you would should make a REAL documentary about TV. Look forward to all your videos Rusty👍....Nancy

like I said I enjoyed it and I think the Director did a great job on it. Unfortunately people that have not seen it seem to think its a hit piece on TV. Personally I don't think so. Thanks for adding some perspective. I'll be looking forward to your next video. I hope to get to watch the movie soon as my schedule will allow. I'm about two years out from retirement so I am currently gathering data and fact checking quite a few places in Florida including The Villages.
I really think the Villages is in a league all by itself and with that said it does not mean it is meant for everybody. The next one may take some thinking for sure. Already taking notes. Old brain forgets stuff...LOL.
@@RustyNelson From everything I've heard and seen online so far I believe you are correct about the Villages being in a league by themselves. I owe it to myself to do my due diligence before I commit, so videos such as yours are very beneficial. I've watched your entire series to this point. Thank you for doing this.
Hey Frank thanks and it's nice to hear they are helping some and "slightly" entertaining"...LOL. I may sneak in one on the Rec centers before I do part two to this as its getting more involved than I thought. Thanks for the comments.
Yes except that was a movie with a budget and some star power. I was going to bring that movie up in the next video as there seems to be some truths in it. Thanks for stopping by.
We watched the movie last weekend. The movie was definitely representative of people, not The Villages. It was a bit disturbing. It felt more like a subculture of the people, a minority. It was very sad. I was definitely bothered about the van situation, not giving anything away.
I actually liked it for what it was...not a doc but a story about people. Entertaining for a low no budget Indy film. But we all have opinions. There is a new one that just came out that I believe is more like a doc. Have not seem it yet. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
Hope you enjoy it! Please let us know what you think. I read all the comments and would love to hear. Have fun and realize its not meant to be a real life documentary. Just enjoy the ride in these peoples lives.
I had no idea really what to expect. It kind was hard to watch at first because I know that is not what the villages is like as a whole. Filmmaker kinda played of the absurdities. But as a film he did a good job...
@@RustyNelson I also noticed the Producer Jeffrey Soros and wondered if he had any relation to George Soros. That troubled me because Soros is very political and evil in my mind and I figured if he was related to George, that was the reason for the negativity about TV. Not trying to get into politics but President Trump mentioned TV and that was enough for Dems to go after it. Anytime Trump mentioned anyone or anything, the Democrats trounced.
Yes, I do not get into politics and will generally not have it on here. The one thing I found really really refreshing was...even though I was there in the heat of the election time I never had anybody say a word of politics to me. People may have said something that made me believe they felt a certain way but never anything mean. No hate at all. it was great! And yes I'm a social person so I was out all the time meeting people.
Yes this next one may take some thinking. More than just things I did or did not like the more I think about it. Just a matter of getting it all on a video. You are obviously knowledgeable of filmmaking, and the information and analysis you provide is enlightening . Thanks for this critique of the documentary.
So nice of you. I did not want to get too technical and just wanted tp say two things. It was a fun ride with the characters and don't expect to see a true to life historical doc on the Villages. Like I said...would love to mee the real people to talk with them.
Thanks for your response. I was disturbed at the people that were in the documentary. I think it would be nice if you did a documentary on people that were More into the main stream of the villages. I know you would have to make it entertaining but you sound like the kind of person that can do that. It would be helpful to me as a future member of the villages.
That was kind of my point when I said he picked people that were going to provide conflict. In my short visit to TV I found that most of the friendly people I met would not have that conflict to create drama...thus boring as a movie......LOL. thanks for the comments and have a great day.
Mr. V. Hey I'm from Philly. It's a way of communication...LOL THanks for jumping in. Hey wait a minute...aren't you the guy that played John Travoltas but double in movie Phenomenon?
That was kind of my point that they did not represent the average person in the Villages. But I really find interesting is that we all have our problems and it was great to have them open up and invite us into their lives. As I said...would love to meet them for real. Thanks for your note.
How does a guy( you) who only makes a brief visit to the villages have a true understanding. I live in a gated community near the villages, my wife has two brothers in the villages. The couple called the newcomers have a better opinion ( they LIVE there) . Than some guy from Pennsylvania. In other words move there or just shut up.
Wow Don you sound like you have a chip on your shoulder about something. Hope you weekend goes well. Yikes. First off...I never said I had a "true understanding" did I? Show me where...please. I'll be happy to correct it...really. How do you know how much I know and when I find out something is it wrong for me to pass it on to help other people??? Nothing wrong with me passing along the information I have found out so far...is there? Seems like many people are happy to see what I've learned. Second...I have every right in the world to give my thoughts after doing a lifestyle visit and if you have watched my other videos you'll see I have not given my opinion about much of anything...have I? Or maybe you have not watched. What...I'm supposed to just sit there numb headed and say this was a waisted week of my life and I can't think or have an opinion. Watch the other vids...I was just reporting...that's it. I can comment on the movie...I've directed and produced. I've already said I'm going back down to see more but there is nothing wrong with me saying what my thoughts are after a week. I know well of the Newcomers. Seem like very nice people. Did you write to them on their first videos and tell them they should not have an opinion? Anyway sir you have a wonderful day and hope I can go belly up to the bar with brother in laws and learn something new. Wish you all the best. Rusty
Don, I gotta say your “critique” of Rusty’s video was pretty over-the-top. He was very honest about offering a perspective based on his knowledge. At NO TIME did he try and represent/misrepresent his knowledge or background. I found it informative & interesting. Thanks
@@RustyNelson I just don’t get how someone would give opinions about a FAKE video, and see people pound on it. Been there a lot more than most . An it’s nothing like the video. PS . Living a great life in a gated community, thanks
That's exactly what I said Don. I said in whole that the people were not representative of the wonderful people I met while I was down there and did not feel that this is what the majority of the people I met were like. That is my experience so far. The "characters" in the movie had some interesting things going on for sure and ...as I said this is why the Filmmaker picked them to use. BUT...I do not claim to be a expert on the Village...ever. I even say that in my other videos...that I'm on an adventure and I'm just inviting people along to learn as I learn. BTW I've been thanked for that over and over again by people on here because I provide useful information. As for the movie...I feel I know more then most since I've worked in LA...directed, produced and acted. I also recruited for film festivals. The movie was just that...it was a movie. I personally don't believe it was ever made to be a "documentary" or reality show or tries to claim that this IS the Villages. Here's a question...have you seen the movie???? I don't mean that on a smart ass...but you would not understand if you have not. The movie was entertaining to me. But I saw it as a movie about some people not a movie about the true real to life Villages.

Thank you, very well done!
Thanks for the comment. Definitely a different view. Can make you think for sure.
Where can you see the video?
Here you or the link is in the text of the video. thanks for stopping by. amzn.to/39ro89M
Looking forward to part two!
Part two will get a little personal and my thoughts on the villages rather then the movie. But the movie definitely made me think about life.
Me too.
My wifes grandparents lived there it is a party town for retired people great place!
You could say that...LOL.
It is difficult to get to part two of the information on the documentary about the villages. Can you help me find it?
Thanks. I have not done part 2 yet. Have to do some thinking first. Maybe about a week. Thanks so much for asking and if you are subscribed you will get notified. All the best.
Thanks for your input on the "movie", we will have to check it out this weekend. Looking forward to your next video on this topic. Have a great weekend & of course thanks for your service. :)
Have fun weekend. Yes this next one may take some thinking. More than just things I did or did not like the more I think about it. Just a matter of getting it all on a video. More of an introspective that came to light by watching the movie.
Did you see the Joe Schmo reality show? 😆 🤣 😂
Amazing video on your thoughts...yes it’s a movie about the characters in TV....now I think you would should make a REAL documentary about TV. Look forward to all your videos Rusty👍....Nancy
Thanks so much for your compliments. I've been thinking if depending on my time down there that it would be fun to start "playing" with the filmmaking thing again. I'm sure there are people doing that already. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
Definitely informative and I am going to watch that video… It sounds like it’s fun!
like I said I enjoyed it and I think the Director did a great job on it. Unfortunately people that have not seen it seem to think its a hit piece on TV. Personally I don't think so. But it did make me take a good hard look at somethings that we all seem to face as we get older. Hope you have fun watching...let me know what you think.
Gave me a bad feeling. Didn’t like it.
Hey Rusty, been following a couple of your videos. Appreciate the videos and enjoy listing to you. Cool Gallery plus your work is very nice. Any way my wife and I are headed to the villages in March for the life style visit to check it out. Take care. Thanks again.
Thanks 👍 Get excited and make a list of the things you want to do as it can get a little overwhelming. Thanks gain for the gallery compliment. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
Kinda like the movie Boynton Beach club?
Yes except that was a movie with a budget and some star power. I was going to bring that movie up in the next video as there seems to be some truths in it. Thanks for stopping by.
We watched the movie last weekend. The movie was definitely representative of people, not The Villages. It was a bit disturbing. It felt more like a subculture of the people, a minority. It was very sad. I was definitely bothered about the van situation, not giving anything away.
Yes it was a little disturbing but that comes from connecting to the viewer. It definitely got me thinking.
@@RustyNelson Me too!
One of the worst documentaries I have ever watched BIG waist of money
I actually liked it for what it was...not a doc but a story about people. Entertaining for a low no budget Indy film. But we all have opinions. There is a new one that just came out that I believe is more like a doc. Have not seem it yet. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
Excellent. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing the film this weekend.
Hope you enjoy it! Please let us know what you think. I read all the comments and would love to hear. Have fun and realize its not meant to be a real life documentary. Just enjoy the ride in these peoples lives.
I’m going to have to watch it now. Sounds intriguing.
Intriguing for sure. Please tell us what were the things that bothered you 😕.
Yes this next one may take some thinking. More than just things I did or did not like the more I think about it. Just a matter of getting it all on a video. More of an introspective that came to light by watching the movie. Some things I think people may want to really think about when moving down there. THanks for stopping by.
@@RustyNelson Rusty, don’t let naysayers alter your plans for the next video. I can’t wait to see it.
Thanks...
I think it would be nice if you did a documentary on people that were
More into the main stream of the villages.
"documentaries tell the history" objectively false
Yes this was not about the Villages but rather about the people. Could have been in NY. Subscribe Button: bit.ly/3aToJ3H
Are you sure you're not a little Italian. you talk with your hands a lot, he he great presentation. in both languages.
Mr. V. Hey I'm from Philly. It's a way of communication...LOL THanks for jumping in. Hey wait a minute...aren't you the guy that played John Travoltas but double in movie Phenomenon?
I'm the guy who played Robert Duvall s butt double.
I hope those characters are actors. Otherwise, very depressing! It really shows the Villages with a dark lens!
I agree with Don. Spend more time here. Move here. Then review the movie! I'm not sure what purpose you serve doing it this way.
