My most favourite part. It exposed him of the fact that even though his views from his monologues and songs has a shade of truth, it was nothing more than a lonely rambling of a guy stuck in his room for a long time and only uses the things he knew and realized as an excuse to never go out.

I relate hard to spending my childhood and teenage years essentially always inside aside from school and it hit hard, man. Eyes wide and my breath hitched because he just captured that feeling of being stuck inside again during the pandemic and thinking “oh I’m always inside, it’s no big deal” when in reality it was almost never my own personal choice to be inside in my most important years and that’s what finally made me realize that. I see a lot of people saying that this song means a lot, but nobody seems to be discussing why. Before I type out what I believe it to be, I want to note that this is something of an attempt to see how well I am at reading into things, as a reviewer. So, if I get some or all of this wrong, go easy on me.
First things first, the song isn't sad because it sounds sad, or it's a farewell. I mean, it IS a sad song because it's a farewell, but the "goodbye" part of this song isn't "see ya around." It's much more final than that. In the first half of the song, which I'll be calling the "goodbye" portion, it sounds to me like he doesn't think there will BE a next time. Refer to "I'll see you when I see you" and not something like "Until next time." Sure, maybe it just sounds better that way. But I get the vibe that any suggestion made by Bo in the first half is nothing more than hope. "You pick the street, I'll see you on the other side" "I'll sit on my couch and watch you!" It's not that these things are impossible, but it repeats indications that this moment they have together is the loudest his voice will be, the best that he'll be heard, and the strongest the connection between he and his audience may be. The repeated line about telling jokes with no one laughing in the background sounds like "this was hard, you try it." But I feel like Bo is more humble than that, so I would rather think it really means that he just wants someone to be there with him, to tell HIM a joke. Not to an audience that can't validate how clever or appropriate it is, but him, who is there, and the intended audience, prepared to laugh at the joke. And finally, until the second half of the song, his promise to never go outside again. I feel like it's obvious, but I haven't seen anyone interpret this in the way I'm about to describe, perhaps because it doesn't require an explanation, but "Inside" is a title with multiple contexts. We already know it refers to this special being performed inside his home, and not outside to the public, but it also refers to how he feels on the inside. Most of Bo's works have been comedic, and dark humor. None of his big works have given an introspective on his mental health like this one has. Here, inside his house, he's letting that all out. And so we return to the line "I promise to never go outside again." Morbid as it sounds, it's him promising that he may never open up do this deep degree again. So, the second half, where he stops saying goodbye, and begins calling for help. A plea to not be forgotten. Of course, he refers to his career up to this point when he talks about how it started, 14 years ago. But when he asks to guess the ending, or if it ends at all, it feels much more like he's counting on it. It sounds like he wants it to end, but it might not. He says in All Eyes On Me that this project was his excuse not to kill himself. And then, perhaps the strength of the song, when he refers to parts of Welcome To The Internet, Comedy, and Inside respectively. I don't believe these are simple callbacks. I believe they are intended to change the context of the meanings. Everything all of the time is precisely what the internet is for. If it exists, it's there, and you never won't have access to it. But in Goodbye, it sounds more like he hopes for something more whimsical. Being a big name, there's bound to be plenty of fun experiences. He wanted that, but he needed to take a break from doing shows. He didn't get everything, and now he's hurting. The one line that is changed from Welcome to The Internet is the closing line, "I'm finished playing and I'm staying inside." That line sounds absolutely the most powerful in this entire song. His work is done, he's back to what he was before, and he doesn't want to open up again. For the Comedy callback, he puts himself in the shoes of the panicking victim, asking for someone to call him, and tell him a joke. The theme of Comedy is that he wants to fix the problems of the world by making jokes about it. After all, when you're forced to laugh at something funny, it makes some horrible things feel better, even a little. Bo bears that burden, because if he's telling the jokes for people, who's doing it for him? And the reprisal of the line "You're really joking at a time like this" contrasted to the more questionable "Should I be joking at a time like this?" Implies that when Bo tells a joke, he does consider that maybe it's not appropriate. But if someone went to him, to give him a joke, the thing he simply does best, how could he possibly find it funny and not sad? Finally, the completely unchanged Inside portion of the song. It's slower, deeper, and has multiple voices singing than how Bo sings it in Inside. I haven't been referring to the video of this song yet, but once this part comes on, a light flashes on Bo, who is sat there naked, not even singing. He let himself be exposed to the public. This is the very last thing the special shows us before the credits, which seems to be the audience reaction to seeing Bo, inside his home, inside his head, being beckoned to come out and finish his work. Meeting the expectations of the audience, rising ever higher. His audience catches him, and shines a bright light in his darkened mind, where his emotions are exposed for the world to see. That's why he's naked, because something he may have been trying to keep hidden is now exposed. His expression of his mental health, and some laughs along the way, put into a special, shown to the world, and now that they have it, they need him to come out, and give them more of what they want.
Or maybe he's just saying bye. What do I know?

For me, I more took the "am I back where I started 14 years ago" as in him going "Well, I started by posting funny videos online and is that what I'm back to?"
I personally like to look at that line that way since in "Left Brain, Right Brain" he does reveal he started doing comedy in general because he was essentially feeling depressed. He started making Inside because he was feeling depressed. I think mine is a more literal interpretation but Occam's Razer and all.

Some cope externally, some internally, when an internal cope'r comes across an external cope'r they become upset that the external one is effectively drawing attention to the tragedy, meanwhile the external one feels like the internal one just doesn't care which makes him feel like his feelings are being trivialized. "Inside" had a double meaning in his special: physically inside (quarantine), and inside the internet ("the real digital world where meaningful interaction happens") ("Got it, good, now get inside")
"Inside" was filmed "inside" and produced "inside",and the twist at the end, when he tries to go 'outside' revealing that he was on stage the whole time, and the entire thing was "inside" a theater (produced for entertainment) sets up the ending when he is watching his own special and approves.
He is empathizing with himself for criticizing himself for being a hypocrite about doing the very things he is both criticizing and empathizing with.

My entire life, i've always been mentally stable and looking at the comments here, its apparently a metaphor/allegory to mental illness or something similar. I don't know since I never experienced it but I guess this is like the saying in Art:
"Art should comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable"

    • @valiantknight6364
      @valiantknight6364 2 года назад +7

I think there's something to be said about you just experiencing the empathy of a shot that is meant to evoke it. Metaphorically, he's supposed to look stunned and vulnerable, small in the shot, isolated, and dazed by the light. Overwhelmed, surrounded by all the equipment he's accumulated throughout the special, and a tone change and shot change that disorients the listener a bit to help sell the staging. It's supposed to feel lonely, vulnerable (he's literally naked, you can't get much more vulnerable than that), stuck in a circle of a spotlight that's been chasing him since he was 14.
It kinda hits that beat of the introvert who didn't think that not going out during covid would make a difference, and then it *really* did, it hits in more places for other people who have felt isolated their whole life for whom covid just twisted the knife. But it doesn't *lack* meaning for those who are entirely neurotypical, because we *all* felt vulnerable and alone and isolated during covid, and we've all felt vulnerable and alone and isolated at some time. Art is meant to evoke feelings that you may not be able to feel yourself natively, but it can hit harder when it's a feeling you *have* had that you haven't fully examined, which is how this special hit for a lot of people for whom covid didn't really... End, it just petered out in their area but never really went away. There wasn't any conclusion or emding, there was just an arbitrary cutoff point where you started going outside more often because you couldn't afford not to anymore.
So yeah. This whole special, this whole song, that specific shot is supposed to terrify. You're experiencing the art correctly.

There's a lot of music that I'd consider to be made artfully, but Bo's music is the only kind I listen to and think "wow, it's like someone is painting using music"
He just creates such a clear image with his songs, that last bit (3:49) especially. I mean for fuck's sake, if that was a painting it wouldn't look out of place next to pieces such as Stańczyk. It's just so striking.
It reminds me of a line from the Crucible, "It is a providence, and no great change; we are only what we always were, but naked now". This scene has Bo exposed both in the literal sense of being naked, and in a metaphorical sense, with the "spotlight" on him being both a tool of stagecraft to highlight a performer, and a tool used to highlight fugitives, revealing their location for pursuit. I don't feel as though I'm misled in seeing this as how Bo views himself and maybe artists in general. Having himself bared before the world, to both their enjoyment (the spotlight of the stage) and their damnation (the spotlight of the pursuit).
I don't support art supremacy or any of that nonsense, but this really feels like it embodies what people think of as "art". He has such an amazing understanding of the images he creates, I wish I understood enough terminology to get across exactly why it grabs me the way it does.

viewing “the inside” as content creation and his career around that, and “the outside” as leaving that for a quote-unquote normal life puts some of the lyrics, especially in this song and ones it calls back to, on a whole ‘nother level of genius. the inside/content creation allegory is very thinly veiled but just enough hiding in plain sight that nonspecific-you (or at least i) won’t notice - until you do, and then bang uour head against the wall because of course it is! what else would it have possibly been.

His ability to create music and art is incredible. Songs of his like this make me so emotional every time. His use of perspective, color, tone and subconscious sounds are incredible at making people feel things, not to mention he wrote all of these in a year by himself. It's genuinely amazing to see how he's able to show a message other than the lyrics with just the video or background music. I'm still so amazed and impressed at how talented he is.

I watched Inside in its entirety twice, but more recently I've taken to repeatedly listening to isolated songs from Inside (and other specials)... having listened to "Welcome to the Internet" dozens of times, I'd forgotten about its callback/reprise here, and man did it stun me and give me chills.

Bo is the only person who makes comedy specials that make me feel my emotions. It’s as if he has taken the spirit of Carlin and cleverly disguised the message in catchy pop music. Brilliant

Is it me or Bo could write the next big musical theatre piece? The way he weaved the different songs from Inside is just masterful. All we needed was mashup for it to rise to Miranda-level.

There's so many hidden messages in this song... most notably, his experience making this special and the vulnerable position it put him in to be critiqued again. Not to mention the reminicing that he just spent so many long hours making it and it's all finally coming to a conclusion.
