The dad left because he wasn’t so supposed to be there. He died in the war, but was able to come to the house to say goodbye. But it was temporary, he had to go back to where he died. He treated Nicole Kidman cold because he knows what she did.

You know what makes this even scarier to me? No blood, no gore, just pure psychological. That is why it feels "normal"; it's just a mom and her kids and a few staff living in the country. But you *know* it's not normal in your gut, yet your brain tells you it's normal.

This is one of those “the usual suspects” and “fight club” twists that all three movies worked hard at. I love how animated you were at being lead by your nose through a garden of subterfuge. That’s where the art of a great story comes to life… in you retroactively reliving the story line from newly won perspective. So pleased that you had such a glorious experience on this… the dark season.

All the credit goes to writer and director *Alejandro Amenábar* . TOM CRUISE bought the rights from Alejandro Amenábar, writer and director of Spanish film ABRE LOS OJOS, to make an American remake. The remake was VANILLA SKY (2001). In return Alejandro Amenábar, writer and director of THE OTHERS , asked Tom Cruise to produce this film.

Nicole Kidman was nominated that year for 'Moulin Rouge'. The film critic in 'The Economist' wrote she would probably win for 'Moulin Rouge' but win for the wrong role; that she should have won for 'The Others'. A wonderfully claustrophobic performance, as if reining in everything in her personality other than her discipline & the fascinated horror of Hell, although 'Augustinian Catholicism' plays a role in Irish literature (Oh happy school english lessons!). The moment when I twigged the twist was when Kidman told the servants she had ordered the occupying Germans out of the house & forbade their return and I thought 'Well, that's impossible'

There's a lot in play with the father. I took it to mean he was saying good-bye as he completed his soul's journey. He slept with her as part of saying good-bye which to me meant he did not leave in anger, bitterness, and grief, but rather in forgiveness. That tells us a lot about the fathers character and implies that he might be able to complete his journey.

Grace's scream right at the beginning is not an ordinary nightmare. It's the realisation of what she has done to her children and herself.
Also the scene where Grace is loading the shotgun for the first time, *she can be seen pausing in a recollective moment* after she slams the breach shut. This is most likely due to her faint realization of _déja vu_ , most likely alluding to her suicide by using the same gun. It is subtle, but noticeable!

      @randomjunk1977 11 месяцев назад +5

@m4tth3w967 I'm pretty sure that's why I was kinda meh on this one when I first saw it. It was recently enough that "I see dead people" was pretty much still a meme and this is basically the exact same twist: the main character was the ghost the whole time. They kinda added another layer to it at least, and the movie is certainly well done, but if you were a movie-goer around 1999-2001 the reveal on this did feel a bit like "Oh, so it's just the Sixth Sense again"
Imagine if some other sci-fi movie came out in like 1982 where the main villain was suddenly revealed to be the hero's father. No one at the time would be faulted for being like "Oh, so we're just doing Empire Strikes Back? Okay."
Watching The Others 20 years later (damn I'm old) it probably come off less derivative than it did at the time.

As a person raised Catholic, the fancy communion dress was likely due to first communion, which is a Big Deal. I love this movie because it's so slow and suspenseful and hits JUST RIGHT. Another movie that's sort of similar, in line of "normal scary" is The Woman In Black, which stars Daniel Radcliffe, it's often overlooked but I think it's wonderful. I haven't seen the movie in a long while and man, I forgot how good it was. The twist in 'The Others" is terrific, of course. It's conceptually great, too, though. In haunting stories, it's easy to imagine the ghosts invisibly see and hear everything the living people do, like creepy voyeurs. But in this film, the living and the dead only perceive each other some of the time, so they are both "haunting" each other. And the dead are sometimes in denial and imagine they're still alive, so how could a stranger possibly be in their house? Must be tresspassers! it's great.

I can see why Nicole Kidman’s character lost her mind as well, being trapped in the house all the time with two children that can’t be anywhere near any light so you have strict rules and can’t just go anywhere, your husband has been missing and then is presumed dead, the loneliness, the isolation and stress would get to anyone- but hopefully not to the terrible degree she took it to!

You go in knowing something is up to knowing it's a haunted house to knowing something is up with the staff then getting an idea that the staff is probably dead and having it confirmed to where you're like, "Yeah, I got that halfway." And then getting smacked in the face so hard with the final twist that it feels like Jesus slapped you with his sandal. It was very well done.

One of those movies that you can STILL Watch again and again simply because of the incredicble atmosphere and the really gorgeous cinematography. When i watched that movie for the first time it was a year or so after it came out. My best buddy had the DVD and we watched it on his home theater sound system and WHOAAA does this really elevate the movie. Usually i think surround sound is often kinds gimmicky and cheap but here it reaaaaalllly enhances the whole spooky vibes. Especially the voices during the scene where the kids are in their bedroom and the sister brings one of the ghosts to her brother. The whole movie also just always reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe's story "the fall of the house of Usher." because of the huge but almost empty mansion and the ever present but unspoken dark secret that hovers over the house. Really one heck of a modern classic.

The very old guy who played the handyman, was the legendary Eric Sykes: he's unknown in the USA but was super famous and much loved in the UK for nearly 60 years; he had a very long and hugely successful career as a writer, producer, comedian and actor. At the time he made this film, he was well into his 80s and was, sadly, almost completely blind and totally deaf - he had been deaf for most of his life, believe it or not! He sadly passed away not too long after completing this film.

One of the most effective psychological thrillers ever. It plays so much with the usual horror tropes but takes them different directions... or sets you up and then doesn't use it, or uses it in a non-traditional way. It very much brings you into the character's isolation and you feel like you're a part of their little group, like it's happening to you to. And they keep it going until literally the last 5 minutes of the film when they nail you with that twist that flips the whole damn thing on its head.

This is a perfect example of subverting expectations, where all the clues are there and become crystal clear in hindsight, so the result makes sense, and that's what makes it feel good. When photography was new it was rare and expensive to get photos made. After people died, especially children, people wanted photos of dearly beloved. For adults they would take pictures on death bed or in coffin. For children, they would often dress them up, prop them up as if they were alive. Sometimes take photos of the family or siblings with the departed child.

Editing Ashleigh brought up The 6th Sense and there's something I need to point out: although The 6th Sense did come out before The Others, the script of The Others was written before The 6th Sense had been released. I remember the director of The Others talking about how horrified he was when he watched The 6th Sense because people would assume this film was heavily "influenced" by The 6th Sense. It was just that two people happened to have a similar idea more or less at the same time.
Apart from that, something I think you'd be interested to know is that director Alejandro Amenábar not only directed AND wrote the script, but also made the music in the film. I'd recommend that you watch his two previous films, called Thesis and Open Your Eyes (Tesis and Abre los Ojos respectively). They're two great thrillers you may enjoy. I don't know if you'd be willing to watch films in other languages, though,

I've loved this movie since it came out and I felt that no one had heard of it!! FINALLY, since Covid, I'm hearing some love for this masterpiece. The day I saw this, I came home to change clothes. I went to my upstairs bedroom and, despite being alone in our townhouse, I closed the door behind me out of habit and cracked the window because there was a gorgeous breeze... As I took off my t-shirt, my closed door slowly creaked open. My body froze - instantly, my mind raced back to the piano scene! I just stared at the open doorframe with no one standing on the other side. A moment later, it began to shut, just as slowly as it had opened. I knew that it was the air pressure from the breeze wafting in - but it was too much of a coincidence for me! lol PS Tom & Nicole were going through their divorce when this was made. Despite the friction, Tom said, "I knew Nicole would be perfect in this role." Bravo for being smart and putting their personal problems on the back burner!

Watching this movie a second time through is great, because they telegraph so many things well that you simply don't pick up on until you already know the twist. For example, when the mom grabs the shotgun for the first time, and racks it closed, you see her suddenly hesitate for a moment and look down at the gun in her hands. The memory of what she did is repressed, but there was a momentary flash of something from the last time she held that gun for real.
