Leatherman Super Tool Series Review. Original vs 200 and 300 Differences Explained

  • Опубликовано: 16 июл 2018
  • This Leatherman Super Tool review explains the variations between the revisions of the original, the 200, and 300 versions. The Supertool is a large pliers based multitool first introduced in 1994 and featured all locking tools. I compare other leatherman tools in this video including the Wave, the Surge, and the PST. The supertool while bigger than the original pocket survival tool, is still relatively compact for the amount of things it can do. If you'd like to supper this channel, check out my other multitool, knives, and outdoor gear reviews and buy the tools through a link beliw.

    Leatherman replaced my original super tool (which was way out of warranty and had a busted lock) with a brand new super tool 300 when I sent it in! Crazy, I did not expect it at all.

      Well before my wife threw my Supertool out at a TSA checkpoint (wont go into the story) it had a lifetime warranty on all parts and design, so unless you are not the original owner, or the warranty conditions differ country to country I suggest it was in fact, in warranty.

    Superb Video! Solid advice on going used, especially for one you intend on keeping inside a vehicle. Been carrying my Charge tti + every day since I got it. I absolutely love it. But the curve of diminishing returns is somewhat brutal compared to what used Wave/Surges are going for on the bay. Years ago, my next door neighbor bought an OG SuperTool at a garage sale for something like $5. He used the piss out of it for the better part of a decade before something gave way. So he sent it back to Leatherman & they replaced it with a Wave, which he continues to EDC to this day.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад +2

      The Surge by my estimation gives you a little weight reduction and more cuts per sharpen... some people pay huge money for that shit... but the Wave works best if you need a good functional tool without all the extra fancy stuff of the charge. I bought this super tool 300 for $15 at a garage sale a few weeks ago. Good stuff!

    Good review and video. I currently own the Wave and the Rev. The Wave is awesome but heavy so sometimes I carry the Rev. but both see a lot of use. The Wave has a diamond hone on the side opposite of the standard file and I really like it. Good tools.

    I just watched your vid on the 300 to see if I wanted to upgrade to it. It is very informative. I have had my 200 since they first came out in the '90s and still use it today. After watching your vid I can't see upgrading from the 200 to the 300 at this time. After years of use, my 200's locking mechanism works great.

    Liked the comparison, I just bought my new Super Tool 300 yesterday, and I really love it. But yes it is a lil heavy and yes it’s a lil bigger and yes that means it’s a hand full. i have big hands so I like that. I like the new design on how the tools open, I didn’t want the Paper cutting Scissors I’m glad their gone. and it feels very tuff in the hands and will handle many jobs without walking back to the tool box, saving me some time. I picked this version over the others because for my everyday needs it’s perfect for me. I like the leather sheath but I modified it a lil in looks. I’m retired and work on a lil bit of everything I think this Super Tool 300 will get them all done, quickly! but Thanks You Leatherman.

    I own a original super tool clone. I bought it 10-15 years ago, way before cloning was a thing. It came with a standard bit holder, so any tool bit will fit. I also have a Wave and Surge... but the Super Tool clone is the one that have the most use. I've taken old brushes with, car repair, house repair, bike repair, electronics repair. It gotten lose yes, a bit, the blades are sharp, no rust, pliers have no damage.... great tool. And the best: it is light!

    BTW, I had a chuckle at the end. You were using the can opener backwards. On that design you pull the tool toward you. A can opener should always move toward the sharp edge. 👍🏻

      The Leatherman's with the fully rolled handles do... Wave, Surge, and I presume the Charge. The half assed-rolling of the 300's handle does not improve the overall feel much in the super tool line.

    @12:21 You're using the can opener incorrectly.
    For the Wenger ("lobster claw") style, you use it turning the can counter clockwise. With the Victorinox style can opener, you turn the can clockwise. It's a subtle difference.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro

    Have the OG in black, got it new in the nineties, retired it long time ago. Picked up the 200, didn’t carry it much before it decided it wanted to stay in the Black Hills during a trip ( I live in Nebraska) and now I’m thinking of getting a 300 partly because it’s on sale at Tractor supply for 72..... but your video has me now thinking of eBay. Which is good , because I already have a like new Rebar that needs sent in for warranty, and a first gen Wave that I got used in good shape..... 🙂

    Crazy how many reviews shit on the 200 mean while I've had mine 20 years now and got it when I was 12! I was so rough on the thing for like 10 12 years, summers in the fishing boat, then I used it though 2 deployments and my entire time in the army! It's comfortable, it's held up all 20 years without a single issue and I use it alot. I do wish it had scissors sometimes but they always suck anyways soon. The lock mechanism has never had a issue but I will say it is hard so I do it the original way which is open another tool just a bit. Glad I watched cause in 20 years I never knew about the eye loop!!! Anyway cool review and peeps the 200 is a awesome tool!

    So..... Whats the main difference between this and the Rebar?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад +2

      If I'm not mistaken the Rebar is a smaller version of this. I actually have a used Rebar in the mail- and eventually plan on doing a review of that- and devote a section of the comparison to the review.

    The Leatherman Rebar does the job for me personally. I don't know why anyone would buy one any place other than eBay TBH.

    Very cool, very cool. You should use your armory and combat skills to leverage the cooperation of Red Letter Media to do a collab.

    If you turn the can away from you, counterclockwise, the can opener on Leatherman multi tools works better. You turn it towards you when using a can opener on a SAK.

    How the hell do you unlock the pliers on this thing?! Lol just got my 300 today and can not close it. Itt is totally locked into place when it reaches a certain point. There must be a release button specifically for the pliers??

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  3 года назад +1

      There is no release button, just hold one side and smack the other side on something. Just wear gloves and try not to pinch your fingers.

    I have the original Leatherman. No locking nothing! I sent it in for repair and think they sent me a new one. I use it all the time. The leather case too.

    I paid 250 FIM for the original Super Tool new. That’s 47 USD. I have the small screw driver twisted and the point of the serrated blade bent. I don’t know would they still replace those. I had the one side of the grip replaced after the locking tab broke when I made some fire wood by smashing the blade with a small log. Apparently the locking tab doesn’t like that.

      I don’t know what country you’re in, but yes... those are all covered provided your not outside of the 25 year window. I’d go to their website and fill out the form.

      Advanced Knife Bro Thanks for the answer. I’m in Finland. I didn’t remember, but I had also the pointy thing between the straight blade and screwdriver broken off completely. The codes in the handles were 0697, and 0090 or 0600. ruclips.net/video/DACXE4yKwfg/видео.html

      Should be good then... just check leathermans website on where to send it.

      Advanced Knife Bro I sent them email. Their support site doesn’t work in EU because of GDPR 🤦‍♂️. I’m pretty sure the original date stamp is the -97 one, since it was the on the side of the straight blade which was swapped.

      ...and they answered by saying that my tool is covered by warranty and asked me to contact the local importer for the repair. That was good service, since the importer didn’t even exist when I bought the tool.

    Rattling!? How can I sneak up to my screws if my super tactical foldable screwdriver makes distracting noises?? They will detect me right away, and I will be completely screwed! Stupid Leatherman.....
