I've told Chris before that Dawn was shot in my hometown, Monroeville. In fact, Monroeville Mall where I did all my teenage shopping. Night was filmed just outside the Pittsburgh suburbs. The newscaster in the movie was Bill Cardille, who hosted Chiller Theater on Saturday at midnight on a Pittsburgh station. Used to watch it when I'd be babysitting - in the dark alone, scared to death. Pittsburgh loves Romero!
I respect the fact that Dan is very knowledgeable. He has to dial it back at times. I want to hear the whole group. Sorry to be critical, but just a bit of ( hopefully) constructive criticism.
Thanks to Rich for always being prepared to look information up quickly so that questions can be answered. I don't think you get enough credit for that. Thank you so much!
1. Dawn of the Dead 2. Martin 3. Day of the Dead I've seen but don't remember enough to rate: - Creepshow - Knightriders (still have this on VHS - no player though) - Night of the Living Dead - Monkey Shines - The Dark Half - Bruiser I'm not sure if I've seen The Crazies, but I feel like I should have. I'm going to seek this one out. I remember hating Land of the Dead and couldn't finish it. I need to give it another go. I've seen Creepshow 2 a million times and loved it so happy to see it mentioned here.
One day, when the someone does a show that is about rating episodes of The Monster's Den, this episode will be high on the list. Top performances by everyone involved - starting with Rich's expansion of the rules to his first two choices which added immensely to the discussion, the information and the absolute hilarity of this episode. Thanks, Rich, for keeping everyone on their game and your choices. And a quick aside to Chris wondering if something was wrong with him. Well, as we say in my neck of the woods "Here in the South, we don't hide our crazy. We parade it on the front porch and give it a cocktail!" And would I enjoy sharing a cocktail with you four even if I just sat back and listened to your tales. Thanks, gents, for another great episode. Any chance of this foursome doing an original Twilight Zone series top 5 choices or something similar? So thanks again to Rich, Chris, Dan and Pete for such a great time. Keep up the excellent work and once again, Pete, thanks for maintaining The Monster's Den episodes.
Chris and Dan, Tales from the Darkside (the tv show, not the movie) was the spinoff of Creepshow with the pilot episode being released in 1983 and the series proper being released in 1984. It has the same score as Creepshow and followed the same format. It ran for several seasons and was replaced by Monsters.
I am surprised that nobody mentioned that David Johansen from the " Cat From Hell " segment of Tales from the Darkside was the lead singer of the New York Dolls .
Top 5: 1. DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) for every word of what Chris said. Spot on. Don't need to say another thing. 2. CREEPSHOW (1982) It IS the greatest horror anthology film ever. Endlessly entertaining, so well acted, always exciting and fun. Loved it since '82. *side note: Tales From The Crypt (1972) is #2 of anthology horror. also much beloved, since my older sister scared the crap out of me with it in the 70s. It's another top notch entry. 3. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968). When I was a kid, the very possibility of seeing this film felt frightening....like it could be illegal. And that's one of the critical things that's missing in cinema today... not only the visionary, mature intelligent filmmakers, a renegade approach and visual flair, but the overall "innocence-meets-larger-than-life," good vs. evil culture of this golden age for music and films..it allowed for a sense of true danger. Great rock n roll is dangerous, and great films are dangerous. 4. DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) saw this with a buddy at a near empty theater in '85. I was about 19. Somehow that nearly empty theater helped drive the narrative and essence of this gnarly good entry. Totally agree though, Miguel is a total douchebag, whiny bitch. Sill love the flick though. As Pete said, the SF Blu is great. You don't really need 4k. Choke on 'em!!! 5. MARTIN (1976) I also had a head tilting first impression when I saw it in the mid 90s. But honestly, about half way through the film, of that initial viewing, I was locked in. There's a great scene where Martin falls upon this suburban home. I was "totally in" by that point and have loved it since. *Also great that all Romero's movies were shot in and around his great home city of PITTSBURGH! ✨ So when I watch them, I'm usually keeping my eye out for Steelers t-shirts, hats, etc. And George never let me down with that either.
Chris : I always thought there was something wrong with me, LOL, no way CHRIS, no way man, me and the bulk of PETES 59k cult , tune in daily/ weekly for those underrated SHAKESPEAREAN” like quotes. Keep it up Buddy, we WANT more !!!! 👍💯
I think Diary is REALLY quite good and scary. I found it better than "Land" frankly. The last scene is enjoyingly disturbing.....the way a good Romero film SHOULD be...
@@dancalmpeaceful3903 Diary is also scarily prophetic. Back when it came out, it seemed a bit much that the main character had to have a video camera in his hand, shooting everything at all times, but now each one of us has a damn video camera in our pockets and can’t sit down to a single damn meal without taking pics or video of it. And this guy was supposed to be mentally cracked lol.

I agree with Chris. The vampire in Salem's Lot is at the top for me too. I think that would make for a good show topic. 👹👹👹 Best Vampire Best Werewolf Best Alien monster etc.
The problem with the colorized Night of the Living Dead is when Johnny says "They're coming to get you Barbara", the distant figure in the cemetery is green.
This is the A Team of "The Monsters Den", both informative and very, very funny! You've got to do an episode on anthology horror films, so many good ones out there from made for TV, to Amicus and beyond. Upfront, my number one would be the 1945 British film "Dead Of Night". Some excellent stories (especially the Michael Redgrave ventriloquist dummy one), with a clever wrap round story for its time. Here's my top five George A Romero films :- 1. "Land Of The Dead". 2. "Dawn Of The Dead". 3. "Night Of The Living Dead". 4. "Season Of The Witch". 5. "Two Evil Eyes".
For someone never off the computer - Rich really needs to do more research! Romero wrote 1/3 of the Tales From The Darkside film. John Harrison directed the whole lot - if you can't include the Night remake (as the guys said at the start) then you certainly can't include Darkside. At least George wrote all the NOTD remake. Creepshow 2, at least the guys called him out on. And it's not even a good Romero script! Carpenter episode the other day - would you pick Eyes Of Laura Mars, Black Moon Rising for him?
Love Romero RIP. Thanks for all the best Zombie flicks. His wife is actually working on putting out his last film Twilight of the dead... it's in the works.
Dan, Tales from the Crypt the tv show wasn't inspired by Creepshow. It was inspired by the Amicus horror anthology from 1972 entitled Tales from the Crypt and it's sequel, Vault of Horror from 1972. All of the stories from those 2 movies were taken directly from the EC comics of the 1950's and those 2 movies inspired Creepshow.

The original Dawn Of The Dead, Creepshow and Night Of The Living Dead remake were my favorite George Romero films. Day Of The Dead was my least favorite but I still enjoy it. I have to thank you, Pete and Chris for showing that, Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition as I went and bought it and happy to have that edition of it, which I showed in my latest unboxing video. Great Monster's Den action. Rich mentioned David Johansen and everyone shook their heads. He's the New York Dolls singer, so he is. My 5: Martin Day The Crazies Dawn Night
Chris, I agree with you on Martin. Imo, Dead of Night (aka Deathdream) directed by Bob Clark in 1972 (released in 1974) is so much better than Martin (1977) which imo Romero sort of ripped off from Bob Clark. Kind of how Carpenter kind of ripped off Black Christmas (1974) from Bob Clark when he made Halloween (1978).
Rich, Quarantine was the crappy remake of an awesome Spanish series (REC). Just stick to the first 2 flicks, although the other ones are kinda goofy fun.
I have a copy of that Allman Brothers show in MA 8/1/83 when Zakk filled in for Dickey Betts. I thought Zakk sounded great. I guess after the Saratoga NY show Dickey got arrested for pushing a cop. So they needed a fill in. Zakk did that first show then they had someone else fill in until Dickey got out of jail. I’ve never seen the show as I only have an audience recording but Zakk definitely nailed it as far as his playing.
I rarely disagree with Chris Alo (well, ok, I do *genuinely love* Sabbath's "Never Say Die" album!), but on the original "Creepshow," I got the comic book first, as soon as it was released. Then, my dad took me to see the movie. From the very first time I read the comic, my favorite story, *by far* , was the cockroach one. In the movie, E.G. Marshall plays a jerk so well, *and* I hate cockroaches, so for me, that segment is both very eerie *and* highly satisfying! :-)
@@chrisalo2989 I have to hide my head in shame here, as a lifelong Sabbath fan, and admit that I've never even listened to "Forbidden" at all. :-) I heard so many terrible things *about it* though, from almost every Sabbath fan that I ever heard talk about it, that I never even listened to it. I guess I should, at least once, though. :-)
I love these discussions. And Chris Alo is always a hoot. Rich Catino has some fascinating suggestions that certainly kept everyone interested. And Dan Brown is just great. Pete keeps it all on track.
1. Night of the Living Dead 2. Dawn of the Dead 3. Creepshow 4. The Crazies 5. Day of the Dead I think Romero said the Crazies is about how the government screwed up trying to get out of Vietnam. Add to that how a crisis can cause people to act totally irrational.
I hate lists but if pressed,my favorite Romero films are Night Of The Living Dead,Dawn Of The Dead and may non zombie films like Martin,The Crazies,Creepshow ,Knightriders and believe it or not,Season of The Witch aka Jack's Wife.
Love the Monster's Den, thank you all for another excellent and interesting meeting of minds, and thank you Pete for being there to make it all happen, you're a star gentleman.
Indeed. Its Salems Lot at number one for me. One of the scariest movies (tv special) EVER made. Scared the shit out of 7(8) year old me when shown back in 81/82 (I don't remember exact date) over here in Blighty.
So many stinkers, like Maximum Overdrive. But there are some classics too, like 7. Firestarter 6. Christine 5. The Dead Zone 4. Carrie 3. Pet Sematary 2. 1408 1. The Shining I especially dug the show, Castle Rock, on HULU.
1. Dawn of the Dead 2. Night of the Living Dead 3. Land of the Dead 4. Day of the Dead 5. The Crazies Hon mentions : Diary of the Dead & Martin 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Survival of the Dead is so horrible it’s a shame that would be his last zombie movie.
That's a Spanish bootleg of Martin. Spain is riddled with bootlegs because of lax copyright laws. If a film is out on blu in Spain and nowhere else....it's almost certainly a boot. Wait for Second Sight's official release.
James Herbert in my eyes is far better than mr king. I’ve read everything by both. Great show btw Dawn of the dead for me then Martin then day then creepshow finally night 👍👍👍

OK, but what do you think about the Forbidden record? :)
@@christianman73 No worries. It is pretty terrible though.
They could not do Creepshow 3 so we got the Tales from the Darkside movie instead. George Romero has said that’s pretty much Creepshow 3.
Night of the Living Dead
Creepshow
Monkey Shines
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
The lead guy from the Cat from Hell is from the New York dolls, isn't he?
"Ed Harris made his film debut in Knightriders."-🤔🖥🍺🌐..
I love Ed in almost all his movies, but his performance in Jacknife made me a fan. Such a great actor.
I love these discussions. And Chris Alo is always a hoot. Rich Catino has some fascinating suggestions that certainly kept everyone interested. And Dan Brown is just great. Pete keeps it all on track.
thanks Don, I try!
@@chrisalo2989 I always look forward to your contributions!
Arrow is not doing the Martain set. Second Sight is.
The original version “Woman in the Snow” from Kwaidan is still the best version. The gargoyle was a good retelling though.
You guys should also rank the top 5 films with OJ Simpson.
Speaking of great horror anthology's....what about Amicus' "Asylum"? Really good flick with a Robert Bloch screenplay.
I prefer The House That Dripped Blood.
@@bschuler6216 That's good,too.
@@deanleslie3269 The patients are running the Asylum!!!
@@bschuler6216 Without a doubt!
word up! tales from the dark side I forgot all about. one off favorites whem i was a kid gonna have to check out again
1. Night of the Living Dead
2. Dawn of the Dead
3. Creepshow
4. The Crazies
5. Day of the Dead
I think Romero said the Crazies is about how the government screwed up trying to get out of Vietnam. Add to that how a crisis can cause people to act totally irrational.
JOHH HARRISON DIRECTED Tales From The Darkside: The Movie
IMO, Mario Bava's Black Sabbath is the greatest horror anthology ever.
I hate lists but if pressed,my favorite Romero films are Night Of The Living Dead,Dawn Of The Dead and may non zombie films like Martin,The Crazies,Creepshow ,Knightriders and believe it or not,Season of The Witch aka Jack's Wife.
1. Dawn of the Dead
2. Day of the Dead
3. Monkey Shines
4. Martin
5. Season of the Witch
Love the Monster's Den, thank you all for another excellent and interesting meeting of minds, and thank you Pete for being there to make it all happen, you're a star gentleman.
Poor Rich gets a hammering in most episodes !
Chris makes these shows very entertaining.

The twilight zone 1983 movie was great... the goblin on the airplane wing!
Dan tends to dominate too much. Not every casual comment from someone needs a five minute backstory.
1) Dawn of the Dead
2) Knightriders
3) Creepshow
4) Day of the Dead
5) Night of the Living Dead
Love Creep Show I & II
Favourite Stephen King film adaptations would be another cool show.
Indeed.
Its Salems Lot at number one for me.
One of the scariest movies (tv special) EVER made.
Scared the shit out of 7(8) year old me when shown back in 81/82 (I don't remember exact date) over here in Blighty.
@@VampireJack10 That and the original IT were scary for a TV movie.
So many stinkers, like Maximum Overdrive.
But there are some classics too, like
7. Firestarter
6. Christine
5. The Dead Zone
4. Carrie
3. Pet Sematary
2. 1408
1. The Shining
I especially dug the show, Castle Rock, on HULU.
@@bschuler6216 Oh yes more than enough classics, love 1408.
@@bschuler6216 I have Castle Rock to watch some time.
1. Dawn of the Dead
2. Night of the Living Dead
3. Land of the Dead
4. Day of the Dead
5. The Crazies
Hon mentions : Diary of the Dead & Martin 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Survival of the Dead is so horrible it’s a shame that would be his last zombie movie.
Night Of The Living Dead
Martin
Creepshow
Money Shines
The Crazies
That's a Spanish bootleg of Martin. Spain is riddled with bootlegs because of lax copyright laws. If a film is out on blu in Spain and nowhere else....it's almost certainly a boot. Wait for Second Sight's official release.
James Herbert in my eyes is far better than mr king. I’ve read everything by both. Great show btw
Dawn of the dead for me then Martin then day then creepshow finally night 👍👍👍
