Weird question probably, but do you work on straight fine texture hair? I've had my locs for a little while and have been maintaining them myself, because my original "loctician" did some things I didn't like, I've never returned to anyone. You seem so knowledgeable and your work is beautiful! I'd love to possible visit your New Jersey location.

I started my locs years ago not knowing the history of locs and its maintenance. I was getting my hair done every 4-5 weeks. Today, I noticed some of my locs are thinning. I was doing it all wrong. I use to think when the locs are loaded with new growth I said not my hair. I was in the neatness category. After looking at this video, my hairstylist probably won’t see me until late fall early winter…THANK YOU SO MUCH, YANNIE..wow..I was doing it all wrong. Were you re-twisting too often? This process seems unpredictable because people have different type of texture and size diameters; so it doesn’t always mean tight twisting caused it. I notice Mother Nature twists the hair naturally without any help. So perhaps the person isn’t aware of this and are doubling the process; however when it’s done naturally not sure what means of preventing thinning can be implemented to avoid it since hair type and texture plays a part besides the parting length. So, when one observes that the new growth have slowed up than I think it is time to check ones diet, stop whatever re-twist they were doing, drink plenty water. and cut back on wetting the roots since the water causes a natural twist, and each time water is applied to moisture, it’s like getting it re-twisted. Water is a product. However, it doesn’t do justice to some people who have more oil in their hair than others who need more oil. Finally , how could anyone speak for all cases when everyone’s genetics are different plus this process is trial and error for each individual. One thing we do know the more healthier one starts the journey the better success it will be allowing the hair to free form without all the crazy re-twist that weakens the roots due to the hair is constantly in a locked down environment not free. That’s my observational experience.

My sis in law has gorgeous long locs, but they're so thin at the root, for the exact reason you said. She NEVER let the roots grow out, then she dyed them on top of that 🤦🏾‍♀️. I'm on my own loc journey, I made the mistake of too much maintenance and started to get the thinness but I took a break and starting to see the fullness again. It's definitely a journey, a learning process. Sometimes you can feel all alone when thinking of the mistakes you've made along the way. Over twisting, and too much manipulation is the worst. Something I had to learn.

  • @ZhanaZee
    @ZhanaZee 3 года назад +15

I know ppl who don't manipulate their locks and they still thin. It's called aging. One can loose hair due to aging with or without locs with or without manipulation

I've been beating myself up for going for thick locs because my volume is just so small (I think I have less than 40 locs in total 🙈), however you mentioning that starting thick will be good for my hair in the long run since it provides a solid and stable foundation has made me feel so much better! Sisterlocks are a bit different because the base is smaller. If go too long before rety you will definitely have thinning at the roots and your more likely to have holes when u rety which cause cause breaking off. My hair grows super fast so I rety every month and I literally only do 1 or 2 turns so I have very little loose hair at the base to snap. Just a thought

Because I'm going on vacation, I have been contemplating washing and lightly retwisting it. My locs are only 10 months old and this is the first time I've gone on vacation with my locs. I know I will be in the ocean and pool water so I will definitely wash it when I get home. This solidified it for me. The problem is that most people use wrong or too thick shampoo which they don't rinse out good and if it's done to tight..uuuufffff....if you use the right technique it won't damage the locs or thin them out!!!! Problems are caused by wrong caring, shampooing it wrong and wrong products like locs and twist gels!!! I only use drinking water and light moisturizing, hair growth promoting natural Oils!!!!most people don't wash their hair right!!! It rottens from inside then...detoxing and rinsing it proper is very necessary for alot of people but some really don't care... It's also important to find a personal right and regular interlocking routine depending on the size of the locs...texture and growth!!!once a year or every two years is definitely too long apart!!!!

Thank you Yannie, you’re an amazing lady.
I’ve just done a clients locs which turned out to look fantastic, 2 weeks after installation, I neatened them up after the 1st wash. I’m very much a perfectionist for my clients hair I use no products and recommend specific shampoos only with none of those nasties and I love creating the neat look, but I also knew we would have to wait for more messiness and new growth to keep the thickness of the locs ongoing and not to cause any stress at the roots. I’m so glad what I thought was right and seeing this video for confirmation is just everything!
I love watching your videos for education and confirmation purposes.
Much love and respect 🙏 Thank you

Y annie I started my locs with 2 strand twists 5.5 months ago. So I’m a newbie. I hope never to have my locs sitting like islands in my head. I was on my way to being a person who interlocks every 4 weeks until I saw your videos. I’m going to extend my next retie for at least 8 weeks from the last time and the goal is to push it to 10-12 weeks. Some of us hear you!

Also, I'm def requesting to be her client once I get past my first year.

I love to watch your videos because I learn so much. I’ll make sure to not do it often. As for too tight, these locticians don’t listen in FL. Hair stylists down here do what they want and get very angry, offended, and sometimes belligerent when you show that you’re unhappy with the bad results stemming from them not honoring your request. I really want to learn how to do my own hair

I wish you resided in the DMV. My children and I are natural. It would be nice to be able to go to someone who is knowledgeable and who cares about the quality of the hair instead of just trying to style for cuteness. I suffer from Alopecia Areata so I never go to stylists. I just wash and take care of my scalp to prevent inflammation and I never re-twist because of my baldness I have throughout my scalp. I’ve had Alopecia since I was 14.

Thank You, Sister! I started locing in 2007 and half cut about 7 inches around 5 years ago. At some point, I REALIZED my love looked differently...there were more of them and they were much thinner than my originals. You are the First time I've heard WHY this has happened.😑

My locs 22in healthy still got my parts In my experience tight twist locs, tight cornrows, rubber bands, locs don't do well under a lot of tension; in my opinion tight styles, rubber bands, not moisturizing, not adjusting loc jewelry every day before moisturizing, not starting off with a solid base foundation part, will cause breaks

Yannie help! So I'm taking this loc certification class and she encourages starting locs with coils right. So the time came where we could ask questions, so I said I understand that this is your preference but there are some people who actually like starting their locs with plaits and two strand twist, especially if they're from the islands. She said well that's what happens when they haven't been educated and are unlearned. Immediately cut her off and said no this is their culture and everyone isn't concerned with clean trim looks. She's even teaching about pruning locs. Yannie! I know I got to get through this class for my certification. How should I handle this?

@@YannietheLocologist I just finished my first one on one with her. I'm just going to get through the courses for certification purposes and not take any future classes. I'm the kind of person that I believe in healthy hair first and she said she was too, but when I saw her slap all this product I her clients hair, I knew it wasn't true. She claimed it was all natural but I promise it looked like butter. She told me I wouldn't make any money don't repairs don't waste my time. I finally just said just because people aren't conservative with their locs doesn't make them bad people. If their hair/scalp is healthy, that's all that matters. Everyone's journey isn't the same. Thank you Queen for setting such a great example. Write the book Yannie! We need you. Love and blessings. Thanks for responding.

When you start your business be true to yourself and keep that energy. Don't do it for the money, do it because you love it and the money will come. Do not EVER conform to others norm and I promise you will be blessed and be the owner of a successful business. I manifest that into your life. Ase
