I'm blown away at your talent. You have to know woodworking, wood carving, leather work and metal work on top of the book binding skills. Very awesome. Thank you for sharing your talent.
You could make your life a little easier by getting some jewelers tools. A dapping block, brass wire, round nose pliers, small polishing wheels, etc… from Rio Grande. I love that you cold work the metal so much. I am a jewelry designer and this is my jam! Your work is amazing.
Those are so beautiful. One thing that would make your “pin” a little easier to make is to place your block in a drill and spin it while holding some Emory cloth on one side.
I watched all 4 of the book making videos for this project. Amazing work!!! The fact that you literally made everything for this project is jaw dropping. You've got the skills to pay the bills! 🙂
Just last night I wanted to make some brass hardware for a project, then today I find this. Fantastic! I was right there with you taking mental notes then you proceed to hand file your own hinge pin from scratch. At that moment I just sat back and contemplated what it meant to stick to tradition. Wonderful work.
I love bookbinding. Have made several books that I love. Each one better than the last (quality wise). But I had NEVER considered making my own furniture. This was awesome to watch. Thank you.
Dude not my usual video i would watch being a retired Mechanical engineer but Holy crap ive been glued to all these on your book making so interesting and satisfying to watch thank you 😁😁👍👍😂
I found this video after watching the installation of the furniture, and they were so shiny and uniform, I thought you had had them stamped. Amazing work.
This is the most opposite endeavor I would ever choose to undertake because I have ADHD. The UNBELIEVABLY meticulous care with which you create is just fascinating!
Thank you for filming and posting this. I wondered where you found the beautiful brass hardware when I was watching the other video. So much work, but so worth it!
Thank you for sharing this series with us! Amazing work, I probably spent a whole hour on every 30 minutes of video, just trying to absorb just how much work truly is required! I am looking forward to watching more of your videos. :)
Imagine a dream home library, with just these Gothic style books, and other hand made notebooks... what an idea... love your work such time and quality put forth...
OMG you are a genius! Everything so clear, and your patience & hard earned wisdom exude throughout. I am inspired to give this a go, where I never had the courage before 😇
Am aware of the 'professional' term of "furniture" now, however, 😊 I still view it as jewelry or bling. Like a man or woman getting dressed up for an evening out or hinges & pulls/knobs for cabinets in a kitchen or bath. When you opened the box in video #5, it was dazzling. It was to dress-up the book! It sure did!
Wow, I’ve been thinking about something like this, but simpler. The extra sanding really does add interest. I like the marker and scribe method that you used. I was taught with tracing paper, but this seems a little more efficient. Great stuff. Thank you for sharing. Hugs, Julie 🥰
You gotta be kidding me, you make the brass pieces too? Sheesh man. I just Subscribed. This is very calming and relaxing, and interesting. Impressive too obviously.
Phenomenal, just phenomenal. There will be one more video. I can't wait, that is going to be the best of the whole lot, and it's been such a privilege to follow this book being made, thank you so much!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I'm not sure which video you might be anticipating though, as the series is all released now. Maybe you missed part 5? You can watch it here if you did: ruclips.net/video/S7LCldA51XE/видео.html
I watched the complete serial on making the medieval book and, along with this, they raised so many questions i almost got dizzy. Surely you did not collect all those tools and equipment just to make one or two books, and it is quite obvious this is not your first time around the block making one of these works of art. So what do you do with them when you finish? Are they sold? Used as gifts? How many do you make in a year? Do you teach classes on making books like this? Is it just a really crazily specialized hobby?
This is by far not my first book, though it is my first gothic binding. I would say that this is in fact a specialized hobby that I subsidize by selling notebooks, journals, and marbled papers in my Etsy shop. And I do use many of my own notebooks on a regular basis. thanks for the questions!
What a fine craft! I thank you so much for this video, I have wanted to do book clasp for a long time but have not found a proper tutorial but finally thank you very much for your job. ☺️
Realmente impresionante!!! Espero algún día poder hacer algo así para un proyecto de encuadernación!! Es realmente motivante verte hacer algo así!! Felicidades por tu esfuerzo y trabajo!!
Not at all! I'm very much an amateur metalworker so any advice is welcome. I have since learned the benefits of annealing and have experimented with soldering, both of which are great additions to my skills. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Beautiful achievement, but I'm trying to give it an antiquity, as bright as it is now, it doesn't seem to fit the design of the book, but that's just me. or how, congratulations on your beautiful work! 👌👌👌👌👍👍
this awesome what you doing. You videos are best what me and my wife had been seen. You are showing not just steps but you all so show tools what you are using to make all those metal pieces and books! That cause this "bad" thing that i want make all so similar book sens i like leather and metal work. But one thing, you should do better polish on brass parts with extra fine water sandpaper like 6000 and final polish with polish paste and wool cloth.
Thank you very much! I did consider soldering these but in the interest of both time and not wrecking them I opted not to. I may experiment with it in the future.
Great video, and even better work! Just my comments: Perhaps I didn’t hear the audio well, but at 8:22, I think your saw blade is not quite tight enough, it should be a sharp high note (although it can be hard to hear with the piece on the blade). A taut blade reduces the chances of it breaking. Also a flex-shaft tool with sanding wheels would reduce the time and effort of all the filing. 13:07 Annealing the brass clasp should make easier to bend without the pliers marking it up 21:58 lovely finish
Hi! I have watched all of you videos and truly enjoy your style of presentation and the quality of your work. Do you have any more projects in the pipeline? Looking at the footage from your woodworking shop I would love to see more woodworking from you as well. Thanks for sharing and cheers from Norway.
I'd way rather hear the sounds of tools and your voice over that awful music everyone seems to think is necessary in every other video on YT. Your art is so beautiful and its so relaxing to watch you make. Thank you!
Do you have a video on how to attach the said made brass book furniture? Also looking for the video to show how you embossed this leather cover and foiled it?
'A bit of perseverance' - has to be the understatement of the year! These are magnificent looking pieces that reflect the amount of hard work you have put into this entire project from start to finish. This however is not a part that I'll try to emulate since I have neither the skill levels or the patience to produce anything even approaching this. A serious amount of thanks for this entire series. One question for you - roughly how long from first conception of this project to the finished project? I'm thinking probable close to a year at least.
Thank you so much, I'm glad all the effort is appreciated. As for time, I started in mid-November 2021 and finished at the end of March, 2022, so well over four months from start to finish.
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS...EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY IN MEDIEVAL TIMES ONLY ROYALTY, CLERGY ETC WERE ABLE TO AFFORD TO OWN BOOKS!! curious to know what was your real time to create this work of art?I just received my great grandmothers Bible, printed in 1872... the spine is shot, I'm going to try to put a new cover on it myself! I'm wondering if vegetable tanned leather work for the cover? I am so very inspired by your work!! Thank you
The work involved in creating these gorgeous books is simply astounding. They are works of art, and I don't know what I could write or draw in them that would do them justice. Do you work with other metals besides brass? I love copper and bronze, I think they'd look beautiful as decorative elements on a book. Also, I hope you save the shavings off the brass. I'd use that like glitter!
Absolutely brilliant work, both the furniture and the book itself, looking forward to more inspirational work. Tell me did you protect the furniture someway to stop tarnishing, lacquer ? Best wishes Steve
Thanks for your kind words. As for the brass, I haven't added anything to it yet, as I kind of like the idea of it taking on a patina. I may use some conservator's wax on it though now that you mention it. Thanks for the question!
Your craftsmanship is impeccable. However, you should have cut the nail and used it for your hinge pin. It is a dissimilar metal, and much harder then brass. I regularly make hinges in my work of historic firearms, so I know this is also historic even back to Roman times, when they recognized brass and iron wore well together.
Me watching this video: * completely understanding that people don't get that even a clamp, a block of wood and a well placed bend made by hand can actually be more exact then precision engeneered equipment on somthing as mechanically organic in function as a book.* Nah. This guy gets it. Guys, take notes.
I watched your Medieval book series (#1-4) and I have to know how long that took you, start to finish. Please reply, I feel like I really need to know this. 💜

Making the book is only half the job, now it needs something worthwhile writing in it.
While Im enjoying the book making saga vids, it's nice to hear a voice and personality!
Thank you for allowing others into your beautiful world. You are so very clever. God bless you
I'm so glad you did commentary for this one!! The other videos were great but I really love how you explained what you did in this one as your went.
Thank you for the video. A little advice from a colleague :). Brass becomes soft when heated and cooled rapidly. No need to bend hot.
Absolutely amazing craftsmanship. Really enjoyed that, a big thanks from the UK 🇬🇧
You need a pair of smooth-jawed Knipex pliers for bending brass.
Fantastic videos making this book. I’m hooked.
This is a fantastic work.
This is an absolutely incredible transformation!
I build model ships. When people say to me "You must be so patient," I tell them to watch this video
I can see how that's a hobby that couldn't be rushed!
Great work and an extremely valuable video.
Spectacular teacher! I love your videos
Glad you like them!

slide the jeweler's sawblade through a candle or beeswax. Much smoother and saves blades
Thanks for the tip, I will definately try that!

Hello, just visiting from your D&D metal work. 😊
Really do love watching these videos of beautiful craftsmanship. ❤

Nice work i would like to try some of the techniques that you employ. Very nice job.
I anneal the brass before bending it so it doesn't break. And I solder the joints with copper-phosphorus solder or silver, if you don’t mind :)

Did you have to shorten the arm of the clasp for the final fitment?
Yes I did, very well spotted! The book was a bit thinner upon final assembly, hence the modification.
@@FourKeysBookArts It was just a small detail, which takes nothing away from the beautiful presentation of the finished book.
Where did you learn your craft?
Why haven't you put out any new videos lately? Are you okay?
when I watched episodes 1 to 4, I was disappointed at the end with these trivial fittings of poor quality. They did not match this handcrafted, brilliant quality. Now that's the world championship. ❤
I'm curious to know if you enjoyed making the furniture or the book more?
I would say I enjoyed the bookbinding more. I did quite like working with the brass, but with eight corners to make it became rather repetitive, and the hand sanding took hours and hours to finish. Great question, thanks so much!
