Now all we need is for someone to make a SEGA Pluto, one that let's us play, not only SEGA Saturn, but also SEGA Genesis, Master System, 32X & SEGA CD & 32X CD games!
So then, wouldn't the real end goal here be to make some version of the Dreamcast that plays Dreamcast, Saturn, 32X, Sega CD, Genesis, Master system, and Game Gear games? Once you nail that you have it all, the perfect all-in-one Sega console. Although I don't personally like the Dreamcast shell, so maybe something closer to the CDX in appearance could be the key.
@@Oysterblade84 Yeah, but that looks absolutely terrible in terms of the physical hardware design and is obviously in a bit of a mess right now. @@Guernicaman Consider, if the PolyMega Mega Module Set can play disks from PS1, PCECD/TGCD, SCD/MCD/32XCD, Saturn, etc, plus Genesis carts all in the one form factor, I imagine something like that could definitely be built with Dreamcast disc reading added and then just the Master System and Game Gear cartridge slots remaining. It would be a huge undertaking, and it would take talent to design a shell that actually looked genuinely sexy, but I think it's probably technically doable. It Sega put its mind to something like this properly, I think they could have a kinda awesome all-encompassing "Sega Solar" retro console. If I were calling the shots at Sega, I honestly think this would be one of thee main products I'd be trying to make happen to be honest. It's a Sega fan's wet dream. I tell you what though, if you had a controller that was basically the BrawlerGen controller with a VMU screen in the centre, you'd have the kinda perfect controller for the machine that would allow you to play games from every system on it basically perfectly. And I think having the choice of the system colour being either black, gray, "Champaign", black transparent, and white would give you a nice selection that pays homage to all of Sega's main consoles and variations too. If I were to pick one, I'd personally go with the "Champaign" though, as it looks classy as all hell imo. And I'd have the green, yellow, blue for the A/B/C buttons, grey for the X/Y/Z buttons, and pinkish red for Start, just like on the white Saturn controller.
Luckily you can put a model 2 Genesis inside the Neptune shell without a 32x. Which makes it a lot easier and cheaper for people to approach. Also Krikzz has been working on a fpga 32x adapter cartridge. Which would be perfect for this project. It would make the mod vastly easier and help reduce the original 32x systems being cannibalized. But I absolutely love this project. It's so cool!!!
I find it fun how people are interested in the Sega Neptune now. I learned about it in 2010 from the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. The main character, Neptune, was named after this console!
The 32X would have been a great platform for all the arcade games that were too beefy for the 16 bit machines but didn't really need the full power of the next generation. Had it lived it could have been a great place for Capcom's CPS2 lineup or Neo Geo stuff. The quick and dirty MKII port was quite good on it so with a little TLC an MK3 port could have been great. Arcade accurate Ninja Turtles, etc. Had they not released both the 32X and Saturn on top of each other, the 32X could have been a perfect stopgap. Use it for all those games with Virtua Fighter being it's exclusive killer app while the Saturn spends an extra year to cook and then launch the Saturn in fall '95 with Virtua Fighter 2. They could have canceled the CDX and instead released the 32X and Neptune simultaneously for people who either owned a Genesis already or late adopters and had it shoulder the load for 12-18 months. Then once the Saturn launches after some more time in the oven it could be quietly retired.

Great video adam. I’ve talked to a few hardware engineers that said Sega put together a few prototypes by basically the same method. Does it work with Master System games with something like the MED Pro? IIRC you needed to remove the 32X if wanting to play those, I guess in this case they just don't work?
Good point. But was there a plan to release the Pluto and the Neptune outside of the US? Plus, Aesthetically speaking, I think the US model 1 would fit the vibe of the other 2 well. But who am I. 😂

They are releasing a modern HDMI version obviously in Brazil. It looks just like the Neptune it's called the Neptune but it's grey but it's going to do the same thing when it comes out
Maybe the PS5 Pro's release has made people reminisce about the Neptune, which would've basically been a Genesis pro console. It's kind of odd that the idea of the "pro console" i.e. the deluxe model has only taken off and become popular in the past decade.
I have been wanting this for YEARS. It just sucks that it's coming out now, as I live off savings this time of year. Hopefully I can put an order in this summer and he'll have a solution for the power button by then.
Maybe pop the shell open, wire in a little clicky on:off switch on the back or side maybe, and I’d love to see a mega drive version both pal and Japanese versions
Just leave the power switch on the Neptune in the on position, and plug the AC adapter into a switched outlet like a power strip or an inline switch and just use that to power on and off the system.
I really want to build one of these. But getting the shell made is definitely not cheap. I want to see a company like Retro Game Restore injection Mould these shells, since they already make Model 1 and 2 shells. I mainly just want the motherboard PCB and then wait until the shell gets cheaper. For that power button, you can try lubricating the power button and see if that loosens it up or may have to take apart the shell and see if lightly sanding the power button socket loosens it.
Surely, if this device can play both Genesis and 32X games in the same cartridge slot, someone could make a version of the CDX that played Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD games all in one, no? I would think that would be the ultimate end goal for all this Genesis-related stuff to appease all the hardcore fans, having all of it in one system and job done. And maybe they could call it the Sega Solar, representing basically all the planets and our solar system, which covers the Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn.
@@inceptional Oh definitely. You'd either need to design an entirely new shell, invent something called the Sega Jupiter, or you'd need some kind of 32X FPGA and sacrifice the battery slot on the Sega CDX. Though I have no idea if the latter would work. I'm no engineer.
I always thought the 32X should have been a new console like the pro version of the base console that unlocked exclusive modes and animations in games, and added SRAM support. But I also believe the 32X would have been succesful if it was a CD drive, in otherwords the sega CD failed because it came out too soon with too low of specs. If sega just waited and did not panic when the first sign of competition shown up they would still have consoles to market today.
I would love for SEGA to get behind an officially licensed version of this. I would pay comical amounts of $$$ for it. I really hope the Brazillian FPGA version of this turns out to be legitimate. I really wish SEGA would do a limited run of full-scale replicas of both the Pluto and the Neptune for collectors. Maybe SEGA could work with Retrobit, Limited Run, Strictly Limited, etc., to try and distribute those costs. It's a pipe dream but let me Dreamcast dammit!
Only thing left is to see someone making a neptune 3 with the sega CD builtin sothat it could become a 32bit CD based system against it’s old competitors at the time with their own 32bit CD based systems😁 Still through that neptune looks great nontheless🙏
5:12 I tell u why: Because in Brasil, Sega was insanelly popular! The FPGA build should be 100% accurate with the original hardware, to an extend that u should be abble to use any add-on, or any piece of acessory made for the original MD and will work flawlessly, including the Sega Cd.
@@M1n0tu5 Yeah but like, nostalgia for what? It was never released. I'm just saying, I think it was more of a "well, that would be cool" factor. But that's purely a guess.

Just leave the power switch on the Neptune in the on position, and plug the AC adapter into a switched outlet like a power strip or an inline switch and just use that to power on and off the system.
I’m from New York I’m originally from Hewlett Harbor Nassau County Long Island we’re heading to Neptune and we’re here to figure it out
Nice vid😊
I plan on buying the one being made in brazil, as long as the price isn't crazy. Paint it black and have some stickers made.
Saw a few tutorials on RUclips on how to make one but I never find the time to buy a 32x or practice soldering
Link to buy a fully assembled unit?
George's information is in the description.
3:00 Fingers crossed for Sega 32x Mini 2 in the shape of Neptune 😍 (or at least 1 32x Mini in any shape🤞)
You'd need a new shell, that's a lot of hardware compressed into a little box.
@@AdamKoralik Well, it's kind of a moonshot project, right.
That stencil work looks bright as hell, distractingly bright.
I wonder if the manufacturer of the shell does that or if it's a custom job that gets applied later
I wish someone would nerd out and do a slot disc drive shell for a dreamcast 🤣 I'd buy that asap
Great video and sorry I’m clueless. So, to play a Genesis game, you just plug it in to the same slot? 🤔
Yes.
How do you put that much work in and mess up the power button?
Unacceptable.
I'm waiting for the FPGA one from Gamescare.
That sucks it has no spring load for the cartridge. But I feel like the power button sticking is almost kind of 90s 🤣
nice, i have two of them
Why Neptune you ask? Because of homebrew. Golden Axe 32X, Doom 32X, Tomb Raider 32X (WIP) and who knows what will be next?
Only thing left is to see someone making a neptune 3 with the sega CD builtin sothat it could become a 32bit CD based system against it’s old competitors at the time with their own 32bit CD based systems😁
Still through that neptune looks great nontheless🙏
The idea for the Neptune somehow seemed like both a good idea and a completely stupid idea at the same time.
tiny bit of lubricant on the power button will fix that issue
I think it's more about the shape.
5:12 I tell u why: Because in Brasil, Sega was insanelly popular! The FPGA build should be 100% accurate with the original hardware, to an extend that u should be abble to use any add-on, or any piece of acessory made for the original MD and will work flawlessly, including the Sega Cd.
That doesn't really answer why the Neptune shell specifically though.
@@AdamKoralik Nostalgia I guess...? And to look legit as possible...?
@@M1n0tu5 Yeah but like, nostalgia for what? It was never released. I'm just saying, I think it was more of a "well, that would be cool" factor. But that's purely a guess.
Does it play Sega Master System Games?
Not natively, I didn't think to check with an adapter but I'd assume no since the 32X always blocked that functionality anyway.
Very cool
Cool!
This is badass!
Is it just me, or should you do a giveaway 🤔 🤣
Now we need an og Xbox that can play dreamcast games
"32bit megablade!"
If you know you know...
Great video, i think your the fastest speaking person I've ever heard 😂
Look up John Moschitta Jr.
Adam you’re the best
You're not too bad yourself!
11:38 It took seven clicks to turn off the console.
How can I get this
