Upside Down In The Sequoia Wood Turning

- I turn a beautiful little vase out of Sequoia . I hollowed it from the bottom.
A fun way to do it without a expensive hollowing system.

That was a great workaround for hollowing and plugging the bottom. I would never have guessed that is how it would have turned out. You’re a joy to watch.
Thank you very much Dale. I appreciate your comments.
Very happy you enjoyed the video.
Take care,
Gary
Well you had me scratching my head until you explained you were working the inside from the bottom. It certainly is a beautiful piece of wood. I think you did it proud. The finish is certainly outstanding. I hate to see a sequoia come down but I have less of a problem when it is not part of a large stand. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and remember, when the wood goes around, the face shield comes down.🙂🙂
Thanks Glen. I thought I would make it a surprise as long as I could. I was sure looking forward getting to that point.
Not really sure why the tree had to come down but they have a few more in the back of their place.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, another case of 'watch the wood' and react accordingly, all to a lovely result. Good to watch, as always! Thank you.
Thank you very much. It was pretty cool watching the grain and color create something so cool.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, as always, another beautiful turning. I don't have all the fancy hollowing tools either but your technique of hollowing from the bottom and then capping it off makes great sense. I never fail to learn something new from your videos. A master turning technician and teacher!
Thank you very much Bruce. Using a piece from the end of the log really helps to keep it a mystery.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I like the design and how you were able to compensate for the lack of an expensive hollowing tool. The technique is not one I have previously seen employed. I am adding it to my repertoire of turning tricks.
Thank you.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment.
Easy enough to do and all I would say is leave lots of stock where it will get narrowed down for support and then it is very easy to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It’s like a cedar asked a pine to pollinate it. Beautiful piece!
Thank you Madonna...very well put. It has a little of both for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good afternoon, Gary.
Well, I do love it. And for the same reasons you do. Very, very nice turning.
Hi there Ray. Happy you liked it as much as I do.
Take care,
Gary
That's a clever way to do a hollow-form. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Tom. I saw Trent Bosch use his system that uses video at the Oregon Woodturning symposium last year. That it was cool. But not cool enough to buy one LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That’s another job well done Gary keep them coming
Thanks Ronnie I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Very nice! The wood grain and colors were a find, beautiful!
Thank you Chris. I knew the colors would be there but the way they seem to melt into the sap would was a real bonus for me.
Take care,
Gary
How can any halfway sane person be bored watching a master at work.
Thank you Stephen. I think the fact that I am only halfway sane might help LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I must say, I do enjoy your videos where you keep us guessing as to your design path. Sometimes, when we think we have you all figured out, you completely flip it around on us and keep us surprised with your finished product.
I'll tell you what this piece reminds me of. As a child, in the 1970's, I can recall a fad, at the time, where people would take their glass soda or wine bottles and drip melt various colors of candle wax all over the outside of the bottle. When the outside of the bottle was to their liking, they would pop a candle right into the top of the bottle. Then, the wax from that candle and every candle thereafter would add to the ever- changing look of the candleholder.
That's what this piece reminds me of. The sap wood is the bottle (I know, it's inverted.) And the heartwood is the candle wax slowly dripping down the exterior of the bottle, creating its own natural design as it flows ever downward.
It's a very nostalgic design, in my opinion. I love it.
Thank you very much Les. I loved your description of what it reminds you of. I could see it while you were telling about it.
I have to say I do not remember anything like that. I guess in those years I was forced to be an adult so I missed it.
Although I might look into it todays as I act like a kid half the time LOL
Thanks for watching and your story.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 just Google "candle wax covered bottle" and you'll see many images of what I was describing.
Here is a particular image with a wine bottle shaped much like your own work of art.

Definitely beautiful, Gary. Great finish, too.
Bill
Thank you Bill. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Very cool, Gary! There really is more than one way to do most things in the wood shop. Great lesson, my friend.
Take care,
.....Gord
Thank you Gord. For sure there are many ways and I am always looking for new ones. Especially if they save me money LOL.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Gary, it really looks great. I like the plug in the bottom. The “dripping” grain pattern is quite stunning.
Love your videos👍
Thanks so much Skip. I can see that plug being used in other turnings as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The finish really brought out the colors of the wood which are beautiful. 😊
Stuart
Thank you Stuart. Some turnings deserve a high gloss finish. At least for me.
Happy you liked it.
Gary
Very interesting the way, you based your project form on chasing the color. Informative and a beautiful turning, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Kent. Unlike chasing a rainbow we stand a chance chasing the colors in the wood. Always tricky knowing just when to stop. Sometimes it easy to turn it all away.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Morning Gary, What a stunning piece.
I love the way you hollowed it out and then plugged the base
I looks like an erupting volcano to me with the lava running down the sides.
So enjoyed this one.
Just like when I was Phil's videos off to make another cup of tea as this one is now cold.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, I was thinking volcano as well. I think when I was wiping the finish on is where it looked like it was melting to me. Kind of like chocolate ice cream melting down warm vanilla cake! LOL
Now my coffee is cold so off for another cup.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl,
Gary
Beautiful contrast. Threw me off at first about the hollowing but it worked just fine. Great choice of wood this week. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Claude I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
I'd call it a "Volcano Vase".... Looks great!
Thank you Dave and for sure it does look just like a Volcano Vase. I saw that more clearly while editing. I love to hear what other people see and many times see more than I do. It is always nice to step back and look at things when they are done. Being up close they can be missed.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is gorgeous. It's a good idea on how you hollowed it out. It definitely looks like it's melting. Good job .
Thank you very much Sue. Even though I could have just a hole down the top it is nice having it light weight like it is.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is so gorgeous! I've never seen Sequoia Wood before and I love it!
Thank you Carol. It sure is. I kind of regret not asking for some of the Redwood that was blown over last year about 1/2 mile from us. Was not sure what they were going to do and it sat in the yard for months. But I really did not have room for it at the time.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very pretty little piece! The coloration is gorgeous! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful peas, Gary I'd like the creative way in which you used the chuck. Smart stuff!
Thank you very much Josh. Sometimes we just have to make do with what we have. It was kind of a like an adjustable jam chuck.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
WOW!!! That is a beautiful piece. I have to agree with you Gary, it does look like it is melting down to the sap wood. Great job 👍. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you very much Scott. Happy you liked it my friend and thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece! The colors are spectacular and the way they look on the piece is lovely! I learned something too about the way you hollowed it out and finished it, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Sure is a good way to lighten something out and keep the looks. I have too many tools and things around here to try and store more. Just would not get used that much.
I guess if one of those companies that made the fancy hollowing systems wanted to send me one I would make room. LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That looks amazing, and I like the way you carved it from the bottom. Great idea.
Thank you Mark. It was sure fun to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely. I greatly admire the way you carve and redirect based on the wood characteristics
Thank you very much Patricia. For me showing off what nature provided is at the top of the list. If the piece has the same grain and color throughout then i get to play around.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank You Gary... omg Sequoia (hard on congestion???)... Beautiful wood with wonderful contrast between heart & sap wood.... A different way of approaching the vase design & different is always FUN...Very unusual "Dripping Vase".. Until next Friday Gary... TM
Thank you TM, this was not bad compared to the Juniper I did last week.
I do love that contrast.
See ya next week,
Gary
Very nice. A great design, the shape is great I love hollowing out..
Thank you very much David. Even though nothing big would have gone into it I just wanted to feel light in weight.
It was fun to do that way as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice turn this week Gary, thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much John and thanks for watching,
Gary
Another stunning work of art. What a beautiful piece of wood. Nicely done
Thank you Bob I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
That is a very unique piece of wood, Gary. Very lovely.
Thank you very much Laura. I was sure surprised to see how the colors melted together. I have another piece and you never know what it is going to look like till I turn it. Guess I will get it on the list now.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow. The heartwood looks great
Thank you very much Joey. I really love and when my wife says "Oh Wow" I know it is a winner.
Just have to love what nature gives us to work with.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The wood will tell you what it wants, turned out great!
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Beautiful vase, Gary. 😊😊
Thanks so much Rob and thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice I always learn something watching
Thank you Arnold I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
I made something similar to this out of Elm for the same reason. My wife had me swap ends after I had finished. She was right as it looks better now.
Since then I made a hollowing tool to make things easier and it works great. I then made a smaller version for my mini lathe and it works equally well.
I love the tiny top opening, but as you said the melting look makes this piece. Great job Gary.
Thank you Gil. It is a good thing there are no rules on shapes or I would be breaking them all LOL.
I do have another log from that tree. A bit smaller but I cut this one way done. Perhaps will go the other way see what it ends up like.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Excellent, Gary. Nice work.
Thanks Donald. Happy you liked it. I sure enjoyed turning it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Amazing looking piece. I really like your hollowing technique. Well done
Thanks so much Chris and thanks for watching,
Gary
Мой любимый момент в работе токаря-когда из обычного полена проявляется красивая текстура.👏
Андрей, Большое спасибо, мой друг. Я ценю ваш замечательный комментарий.
Заботиться,
Гэри
Pretty awesome and ingenious way of turning it! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful project.. My wife says you should make some flowers out of wood to put in it. We enjoyed the video. Have fun.
Thank you Travis. That sounds like a great idea. I recently watched a video where someone made a flower and I thought about giving it a try.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks heaps for putting another great piece up for us Gary. Wasn't sure where you were going with this one at the beginning but as always it came together at the end. ** Days till i retire and have more time for my turning. I went to a consolidated work week 2 years ago and do my five days hours in four so i could have Fridays off to turn. Hasn't worked out that way as life is just too busy. Hopefully I'll get a couple of extra days for my turning, but new grandchildren are going to take some of that time. That will be a pleasure to look after them though. As always i really appreciate your sharing your ideas and skills with us. Cheers
Bruce
Thank you Bruce and glad to hear you are so close to having the time all be yours.
I recall when I started my apprenticeship as a wood patternmaker we were working four 10 hour days. Trouble is we still worked Fridays to get things done. Years later in another shop we were working four 10's and a 8 hour Saturday.
At least I loved my job.
I know you will love retirement and congrats!
Gary
Another beautiful piece Gary.
Before you turned it around I thought it was going to sit on the large end and give the appearance of a lady's dress from the old days, 1700's-1800's. 😊
Thank you Bren. That is an interesting thought. A dress form from the 1700's.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely beautiful 👍👍
Thank you very much. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Wonderful turning. Thanks!
Thank you Dianne. Happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary .. Terry here your no 1 fan from Ireland .. its an Absolut fabulous piece and i love the idea of the blank on the end ??? idle for storing something secret and dry flowers on top.. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Terry. I was thinking of a secret storage so I decided not to glue it in place. For sure perfect for dry flowers.
Take care,
Gary
Gary you are spot on with your description and I agree, well done 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thank you kindly Douglas I appreciate you watching.
Take care,

Thank you Ron. It is very pretty wood. Happy you liked it.
Gary
The wooden volcano!! Beautiful piece Gary. I've been busy turning pepper mills and salt & pepper shaker sets. Been having a blast! As always thank you for sharing and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you Mark. I have never made and pepper mills but I should. I seldom use salt but do use a lot of pepper.
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
Gary
Hi Gary....
Really interesting...
Great way to do a hollow form without using all the fancy gizmos...
Lovely result...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thanks Andy!
I do like fancy gizmos but I need to justify the cost. Plus how much room they take up.
This was a very fun way to do it and hopefully others will find it a useful and thrifty way to do it.
Take care!
Gary
Stunning piece love the shape and the colours
Thank you Colin and thanks for watching,
Gary
Just gorgeous ❤❤❤
Thank you Audie! Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
I like to watch " boring" wood!🤭🤓🤟
Good one Kate!😂🤣😃

Gary
Vibrant and beautiful.
Thank you so much Khan!

Gary
Nice use of the sapwood blending to the heartwood.
Thank you Ronald. My favorite part of this turning.

Gary
Beautiful colors!😊
Thank you! 😊
Looks nice, Gary!
Thank you very much!
Take care,
Gary
I’m watching your video on Saturday morning while I have my breakfast and it’s such a pleasant way to spend twenty minutes watching you produce a lovely piece in such a novel way. My first hollow form was two bowls glued together. That turned out OK too. 🌞
Good morning to you Ray from a chilly 6:20 am here in Oregon.
I do love breakfast but we seldom have one.
I have thought about doing one by gluing 2 halves together. That would be a fun turning to do.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice., Gary. You have a good eye.
Thank you Joe. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks good, Gary.
Thank you very much Brad!

It's a lovely piece
Thank you Judith. Happy you liked it.

Wow Gary, stunning piece of wood and a great looking vase. Cheers cobber and stay well. Deno
Thank you very much Deno!
Cheers mate,
Gary
Beautiful. Good answer to low tech.
Thank you Norma. I just don't have room for all those toys and I would not use them much anyway.
So if there is another way I kind of like doing that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very beautiful volcano Gary.
Thanks so much Jack and thanks for watching.
Gary
Lovely piece Gary
Thank you Glenn I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Gary, I just bought a bandsaw and wondering what blade most folks are using. It has a 2hp motor on it. A Grizzley GO513x2. Want to do some blanks and have 12" under guide.@@ThePapa1947
I love that it looks like it’s melting! Kind of volcanic as well . Very beautiful shape and colour Gary. What a great idea turning it from the bottom to hollow. Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. It was sure the perfect piece of wood to do this.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Reallly nice Gary, thanks!
Thank you Judith!
First off it’s never boring watching you work. Second, fantastic work as always. You always inspire me to keep turning wood. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece. Have a great weekend Gary.
Thank you very much Keith. Always great hearing from you.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Add thought about doing it that way I like the idea. And then sequoia wood is beautiful I really like to.
Thank you Lynda. Happy you liked the video.
Take care,
Gary
very nice turning and very uniqunech way of doing the bottom, I will have to remember that. Got my new shoulder, can't do nothin but watch your channel. Be back doing stuff in a month or so.
Thank you Paul. Best of look with the new shoulder. Not sure about mine. The PT has helped with movement but it still feels like I need a zerk fitting the way it pops.
Take care,
Gary
Absolutely beautiful! It took me a while to wrap my head around what you were trying to create but it turned out fantastic! Love it!
Thank you Karen. I like these turnings that end up looking just the opposite as they seem to be. Lots of fun in the end and happy this worked out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It looks neat, kind of reminds me of a Hershey's Kiss with the curl missing. Love the grain and like you said looks like it's melting.
Thanks Marge. You are right...a giant Hershey's Kiss. Now I need to make a a Mars Bar...lol.
Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary: I sometimes don't have time to watch your videos. However, I think you have the best channel on RUclips for wood turning and I turn on RUclips on my TV and sometimes on my phone simultaneously to let your videos play to help your channel. I think you are that good. I really appreciate all the hard work it takes and the time it takes to do a great channel like yours.
Thank you very much Stevio! This was sure a lot of fun. Coming soon there will be something that was really HARD work LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice, Gary. This is the first I have seen Sequoia wood other than pictures of the giant trees. Looks really nice - the contrast of the sap to heart wood reminds me of the Cedar trees we have here. I think the glossy finish was definitely the right call.
Thank you Qapla. I think the Redwoods and Cedar look a bit alike.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a great piece, Gary! So inviting in its form and character. You brought the best out of the heartwood. I think the knot popping out was a win. :)
Thank you Jay. It is sure one of my favorites, And I did not even look for that knot. Maybe I could put one of the battery tea lights in it and it would make a nice light house.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love it
Thanks so much grambear8. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Hi I think the finish is great, but the impression I am getting is not one of melting but ( because of the shape I suppose ) volcanic reshaping of the landscape. Good job well did. 👍🌞🐝
Thank you Jim. For sure the volcanic shaping fits this nicely. Probably better than what I first saw.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Garry that turned out fantastic mate, just a pity you had to turn so much away but still great job well done.
Thanks Alan. Kind of like digging for gold. You have to remove a lot of material to get to it.
I have kind of become attached to smaller turnings. Or maybe it is when my wife says where to you plan on putting something that big. Just a heads up that just happened today. You will see soon LOL.
Take care,
Gary
Wasn't sure where you were going with this for a while, but it was worth waiting to see. What a beautiful piece of wood and you really did a great job with that shape taking advantage of the transition from heartwood to sapwood. Another really great turning, love it!
Thank you Mark. I kept thinking I should say what was going on but I was hoping it would be a cool surprise.
And what a surprise I got when I saw the heart wood blending into the sap wood.
Nature at work there for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary! The colors and grain are gorgeous.I like your ingenuity! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you very much Susanne! I do love those colors.
I have been requested to make my famous Yam Casserole. I has become a tradition. More of a desert or substitute for candy yams.
Have a very Happy Thanksgiving as well,
Gary
Cheater! LOL! Actually, a great way to hollow without the hollowing jig. I never think of stuff like that but, you nailed it and it worked out really well! I think it was Sequoia that made me sick a few years ago. Maybe your new mask protects you from that sort of thing? Really cool shape (Hershey's Kiss?) and, as always, a beautiful finish! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming!
Phil
Thank you Phil. Well I could said I hollowed from the top but did not show that. But then I would have been a dirty rotten cheating lying old guy LOL But I can not lie about being an old guy.
When I started the Juniper the dust mask like we used at work just did not do the trick So I ordered these to try and it really helped. No burning feeling in the sinus's.
We used those 3M dust mask at work and talk about a dust storm that place could be.
Hershey Kiss....hmm very much like one now that you mention it.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Absolutely beautiful Gary, I love that hollowing idea, the colours and finish are amazing.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Morning Gary
It is Huw and I have been up for 2 hours LOL
Good Afternoon (your time), Huw. It's still morning for me.
@@williamellis8993 Good afternoon Bill. Hope you are well
You r amazing to watch
Thank you very much Dawn. I truly appreciate your comment.
Take care,
Gary
great look[ng, look like glass
Thank you very much Delbert. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Excellent piece Gary. I’m assuming that this is soft wood like cedar or redwood. Love the bottom hollow method. Your bottom plate looks great well. Great job.
Thank you Doug. Yes it is just like turning cedar or redwood. As I understand the Sequoia is just the Giants of the Redwoods.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Sequoyah wood sure looks pretty and seems to be a very easy wood to turn. I assume it is a soft wood and did not present any tearout issues. This turning does have some unique figure that makes the heart wood look like a wax that melted into the sap wood. Nice!!!
Thanks John. It is a pretty soft wood but cuts nicely. It loves sharp tools and the right direction of cut based on the grain. When I look back on it I probably should have taken a lot more. There sure was a lot there.
Wow very pretty piece of wood. I'll bet you where walking around in wood chips up to your ankles. Is turning this wood anything close to turning red bud? Like always it was a very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing. Hope to see you next week
Thank very much Albert. I always seem to be walking in chips around here LOL.
I assume you mean red wood? Yes it is very much like it. I have not turned red bud but we do have a tree we planted about 4 years ago. A very pretty tree that replaced a Sweet Gum we had taken down.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
