  • Pharmacists work in many areas of health care and can specialize their pharmacy practice, just like doctors. As the medication experts, pharmacists also work in the field of neurology and treat patients with epilepsy. Hear from Barry Gidal, Professor of Pharmacy and Neurology at the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy and a pharmacist with a clinical practice in the epilepsy program at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.
PharmD students at UW-Madison learn from leading practicing pharmacists and premier scholars, like Dr. Gidal. As a health care practitioner, Dr. Gidal provides direct patient care in the epilepsy clinic at the VA hospital. As a pharmacist researcher, he studies anti-seizure medications, specifically the pharmacokinetics. He has been a principal or co-investigator on 39 funded research studies and serves as the Neuropharmacology Core co-leader for the Human Epilepsy Project (HEP).
