Check out the previous previous owner, it was me, I bought it in March/ April 2012 with 49k miles, and sold it in August 2015. It was a great car, I used it for a few Trackdays, and it was me who bought it, refurbished and fitted the semi slick tyres on the Boxster S facelift wheels. Actually just missed out on buying it back. Good luck with it. Ps, who changed the plate?
The rattle on start up is the chain tensioner it works off oil pressure the seals wear as long as it stops after a second or two its not a major problem but oil quality is important . mine done it for a couple of years
bro thats a car that im looking over and over, at marketplace, YOU ABSOLUTELY hit my heart with this, wanna buy it too, but im still young without enough courage and money to buy it
Hi George - John from the sycamores. Good to see you have this….. I’ve bought a Cayenne 955 which is in fab condition. Get this checked for bore score. If it has any - get rid. If not - it’s gonna be fun fun fun.
Hope you’re well John! Nice purchase, very brave with the cayenne though as they can be money pits😅 Fortunately this is the 3.2 so doesn’t suffer from bore scoring like the 3.4👍🏻
they are much better looking with the hard top. btw that hard top is an early one with the little ears. change the headlamps back to orange it looks weird with orange indicators and clear front.
My 981S rattles on startup (if you listen carefully over the cold start) and so do countless others - so I think it’s pretty normal as long as it doesn’t last for more than a few seconds
It sounds ok to me, I’ve got a cayman 987 and Boxster 981. I think if you sell the hard top and wheels you will recover half your money back you spent on buying it. Good luck on your journey
I actually really like that hard top. The handling on those cars is amazing if you know how to get the best out them. Hope the IMS is okay, but may as well change clutch at same time if you really have to do it. I wouldn't worry about the rattle on startup, though. Hope you make a profit on it, mate. GT3 RS next 🤣. Si
Good luck. You may find your budget gets a little stretched - I should know, I got a similar Boxster (2002) with more issues than yours and I've spent waaay more than I really need to! As long as you don't have the dreaded "cam deviation" issue, you'll probably be fine.
Like many others have said, no MOT means you cannot Tax the vehicle. Don’t pass this off as not serious because it is. If you had an accident on your way home your insurance would be invalid.
@@GeorgeAusters wanted it gone for 3k, geeza came and offered 2k and I wanted it gone off the drive, I quickly regretted it after but 2 weeks later I’m over it. If you got insta I’ll send you the advert off of marketplace, I’ll reactivate the advert and forward you it if you’re interested to see lol
@anzhrey yeah I have Instagram @GeorgeAusters I guess power steering fault could be a lot of things whereas this in theory just needs the oil leak sorting and a spring
George i am nervous that engine has been thrashed to within a inch of its life...Also the soft top roof is lower and will be giving you a crown bald patch as it rubs your head.
I saw this in your garden update lurking in the back ground by the house but then after a few minutes it turned in to you 7 series so deleted my comment 😂😂😂
People will always say they’ve seen one cheaper.. But when I bought this and still now it’s the cheapest.. Cheapest one on autotrader is 3k with a blown engine
@@GeorgeAusters absolutely a fair comment, but with the way the market is collapsing the way it is it will be much easier to sell with it done. With the mileage I would say go with your gut, but the age, that's a different thing.
If it needs a clutch then I will do the IMS or if I fine shavings in the oil then I’ll do it but my mate did the IMS on his lift and said that was not easy so I dread to think how it would be on axle stands
@@GeorgeAusters it is a ball ache I will admit, and I would defiantly do it with a clutch change. All I would be concerned about is being able to move it on easily, the market has tanked and I don't think it's finished yet. Best of luck with it though, will be watching all your future posts.
@melvinphillips786 I won’t be in a major rush to move this on as it’s just the trading up car so the next car will come once this sells. The market may have taken a dip but long term these will only go up in value as they are now a classic being 25 years old
So you drove 250 miles with no MOT and dumped a whole load of oil on the road! 🙄 These cars are a money pit if you want to bring them back to top condition, which is why they are dirt cheap in the first place. Engine is pain to work on. Good luck.
@@GeorgeAusters HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!!! You wasted your money. You drove illegally because you drove without road tax and without MOT, the insurance you bought wasn't valid because the car wasn't road-legal. If Google doesn't tell you go ask the police I'm sure they'd like to fine you and put some points on your licence.

Ahh love that - thanks for getting in touch mate.
Do you remember any major problems or big ticket items that have been done to the car?
Nice! Nice to see someone doing something different but still affordable
More to come!
I'm doing the same
Saw this is the background of the last garage build video!
You guys never miss a thing🙌🏻
The rattle on start up is the chain tensioner it works off oil pressure the seals wear as long as it stops after a second or two its not a major problem but oil quality is important . mine done it for a couple of years
I was thinking that but I’ve heard of people replacing the tensioner and no difference👍🏻
I did the same with my BMW, revised tensioner 👍
Mines the same, absolutely fine, been like it for years
Subbed & Following! Just purchased a 986 that's been off the road for 3 years with the windows open...
If you don’t like the rattle on start up just flick the ignition key over three or four times without starting the engine. It will not rattle now.

Very nice purchase and good see you are not afraid to take on something that is not a BMW.
Thanks mate.. It’s all just nuts and bolts at the end of the day 🤷🏼♂️
Looking forward to seeing this project George, oh and the lawn is looking good 😂👍🏻

All I gotta say is pray the caliper bolts are not seized into the hub. Steel bolts and alu hubs. Absolute nightmare on mine
I doubt it as all the callipers have been rebuilt by the previous owner👌🏻
Great car and a damn good price
Agreed💪🏼
For me that start up sounds good, however I could not hear the rattle
they are much better looking with the hard top. btw that hard top is an early one with the little ears. change the headlamps back to orange it looks weird with orange indicators and clear front.
These headlights are from factory.. they are the litronic ones (Porsches early Xenon)
When you have to fill oil up more than fuel its a win 😅. I think it is a good purchase.
Hahaha.. it was also actually really good on fuel - think I averaged about 36mpg 👌🏻

Not quite.. I’ll be selling the wheels for £200 and hard top for £600 but still a decent bit to go on fixing the car 👍🏻
I spy with my little eye...a BMW e12 5 series *swoons^ Had a M535i back in 2000, miss it all the time.
Yep, it’s been on the channel for a while mate👍🏻
I like all the content but it’s really that e12 I come to check on 👀😍
Surprising because the E12 doesn’t do great for views
Glad I wasn’t anywhere near you on my bike whilst you were merrily dropping 5 litres of oil on the road
To be fair it wasn’t really dropping on road, it was covering the exhaust and burning it off

The hard top isn’t even the same colour and it makes accessing the engine impossible with it in place so I don’t think it’ll be staying
Winning in life, deserve it George nice!!
Appreciate it mate
Variety is spice
Trailer would have kept 5 litres of oil off the road and countless motorcyclists safer...
To be fair, most of it covered the front of project KFC 😂
Whatever were they thinking fitting those parking sensors!? Anyway, cool project and looking forward to the updates.
The parking sensors are actually from factory and believe it or not - they still work!
1L of engine oil per 50miles 😮
The piston rings must be gone!
Nah it’s just a bad leak, bottom of the car is covered 😂
Nice video! Good to see a Porsche, but hope the BMW videos will always remain.
Of course.. I'll always be a BMW lover!

Like many others have said, no MOT means you cannot Tax the vehicle. Don’t pass this off as not serious because it is. If you had an accident on your way home your insurance would be invalid.
Insurance was valid because I was driving to a prebooked MOT.. Unfortunately the garage closed before I could get there though
I started with 500 to and see were i end up
Yep same👍🏻
Only 65000 miles, it for 64000, the PO "drove it like he stole it"
Haha I don’t think s
Is that dual row isb oil fed? See ya for another with each clutch.
I sold my 2001 Boxster s manual 2 weeks ago with less issues for 2k exactly, you should have bought it off me haha

These engines like to be revved as it’s actually better for the life of the IMS bearing.. Haha I guess I’ll be leaving the roof down then!
Sounds like bore score if it’s using that much oil and rattling
These don’t suffer from borescore.. it’s the 3.4 which does.
Also it’s not “using” oil, it’s just leaking it😅
I’d sell the hard top with the car when you sell it. Will make it more desirable
I don’t think it does, it’s not even the correct colour
Are you sure this has the dual row bearing? I thought the 3.2 only had the single row?
98-2000 had dual row
How come the history had a different reg at the top of that hand written stuff also are u allowed to drive 250 mile without a mot?
That was the previous private reg of the car and yes you can drive the car as long as it is insured and you have an MOT booked👍🏻
I drove a Porsche Cayenne 4.5s LPG 300 miles without any mot but I did have it booked in my local garage
Yes mine was booked in too👍🏻

Pointless swapping the IMS if it doesn’t need it as it’s a lot of labour and very difficult to remove the gearbox on a lift - let alone on the floor😅
