  • Beagles are the best hunting partner anyone can have while hunting rabbits, they jump the brush for you and let you know where the rabbits are at with their distinctive howl and yelp. Rabbits are great eating and a fun reason to get into the woods.

    Oklahoma's own Jerry Clower! Seriously, what a great guy to learn from; I wish I lived in his area. I had a pet beagle and it seemed she want to hunt rabbits so I would take her out in the woods of N.C. and let her loose. She was a natural rabbit runner and just loved it. But beagles, like many other woods and brier patch hounds secrete oils onto their coarse fur to protect them from briers and 'sticky' seeds so when we got home it was into the tub for a wash to get that stinky dog smell off her since she was, after all, a family indoor pet.

    Really enjoyed this video. My Dad told me stories about how some of my Great Uncles kept and ran Beagles. I never got to hunt with them, but I'm currently raising and starting a Beagle pup of my own!

      I love it. I just wanted to run my pack of beagles on a rabbit hunt. I couldn't shoot for shinola but the dogs followed me. So, I would send them out and let others pop the rabbits

    We used to rabbit hunt with our beagles every year until 1976 when we moved into a smaller place with no room for a dog pen and both died early in '76. it was really sad when they died suddenly and moved about 8 months later, so never got any more. I really miss the rabbit hunting but have been on the move or in places where it just wasn't feasible since them.

    Man I remember my grandad's beagles. He had Brittanies for pheasant and duck and that was exciting. Rabbit hunting with the dogs was a lot more relaxing. We'd just walk until be or the dogs bumped a bunny and then just chill out and stand around talking and waiting for the cotton tail to come back around...lot of fun!

    I had to beagles that I really loved, they lived to 16 and 17 years old. I used to catch squirrels in a live trap then take them out to the middle of the athletic field at the local school and let the squirrel loose for the dogs to Chase. In the beginning the squirrel would usually make it to a tree and Escape but after a while my female Beagle figured all she had to do was beat the squirrel to the nearest tree then chase the squirrel back towards the middle of the field. Last few times I did it they caught the squirrel every time. Squirrel could Dodge left and right pretty quick but the dog would Tire them down. Then we moved to Hawaii where there are no squirrels just feral chickens. They gave up trying to catch chickens because they could just fly up into a tree. However one time on the beach my female started chasing a chicken around and the chicken flew out into the ocean and was bobbing around like a duck, my beagle swam out into the Lagoon about 20 yards. The chicken saw the dog coming and Dove under the water like a duck. My beagle looked around and eventually grabbed the chicken

      How’s he doing buddy! Mines just going on 4 months love him to pieces. I had lots when I was young loved to hunt coyotes and rabbit. Poor guy ended up getting run now by a pack one night. We couldn’t keep up to him after our shots went off he took one down in the feild very quickly and took off for pack. Found him couple days later... gotta stay with them in my opinion but my little beagle I have now I leave him on leash for the time being. I’m still young tho so I hook it to my belt buckles and run with him.

    well i was walking my beagle (on a leash) in a vacant field,
    and he flushed a rabbit;
    but the grass was so long, he didn't see it.
    but he did have the scent so he pulled me after it long after the rabbit was gone.

    • @okwildlifedept
      @okwildlifedept  3 года назад +1

      Oklahoma being a really diverse state with a huge range of huntable terrain, it's just too hard to say what's the most popular shotgun and choke. But to make an educated guess, I would definitely say a 12 gauge is probably our most popular shotgun, and the improved cylinder is the most popular choke.

    • @brenyboy26
      @brenyboy26 3 года назад

      fluro to see their tail. typically they have white tips on their tail as a genetic trait so they can be easily seen, some of the cross breeds don’t have this genetic trait and need to be tacked to see them through thick brush
