Excellent review! I agree that losing the V6 option was a little disheartening. However, I love that Mazda is one of the few brands out there keeping the manual's going and even putting it in the mid trim level and not just the base model.
You can actually also start your "push to start" mazda with dead keyfob after using key to enter the car, you just need to place your fob infront of your start button and wait for the green led to light up - then you may push to start.
Regarding how to start the vehicle with a dead remote battery. You hold the fob up close to the start button and it will glow green (even w/o a battery). You can then start the vehicle. You need to read the "Smart Start" guide located in the glove box, Dave.
I love my 6 for many reasons. It looks good, has plenty of go power, gets great gas mileage, handles like it is on rails, and the safety features are very user friendly and helpful. And for the price l paid, with the additional options (MRCC & FOW), it beat the competition cold. If you are looking for a sporty, fun car, give the 6 a view.
The same holds for this Mazda6. There's a circular cap next to the steering column that you can pop off using the key and behind it is a normal key slot.
Good review as always Dave. The diesel will be a very hot seller here in Canada where diesel is priced 5-7% below regular gas rather than the way your diesel is priced stateside.
@Bart ten Thije, would you prefer my 'quiet' voice? In all seriousness, I was without my wireless microphones for this shoot and had to talk louder for the cameras internal microphone. Now you know but I'm sure you've watched my other reviews and have complimented me on my 'normal' voice, right? - Dave
The FOB aux key is just for unlocking the doors. The engine can be started the same by placing the FOB next to the push-button start. Its called emergency start. I sell new Mazdas. Nice review Dave.
Great review. A small suggestion: If you tend to have these cars for more than just a day, then it would be really cool if you would sort of "vlog" some discoveries, comments, gripes, joys that you experience during your time with the car. Sort of like "On my way to the supermarket, and check out this little feature I just noticed". I am not sure it would always fit your current format, but it may give it more of a "life with the car" feeling, and less "review/presentation of the car" feel.
There is a coolant light to the left of the speedometer (at least that is where it is in the CX-5) which is blue at start up to signify the engine is cold and it turns off when it is at operating temperature. If the engine overheats it lights up red.
Also the fuel economy is 26/38 as mentioned in all automatic Mazda6s, if you go with the manual you get 25/37 and if you get the automatic with i-ELOOP Regenerative Braking, you get 26/40 which is a segment leader.
Thanks for this review, Dave! This car definitely seems like the best choice in the mid-size market and is at the top of my list. I'm a little bummed that Alex wasn't a part of this review. I would have liked his opinion on the 6 as well since this seems to be a car he would be into.
@RacelineMatt, I probably won't be doing any head-to-head comparisons anytime soon. I'm focusing on doing one quality car review at a time. I appreciate the suggestion though - Dave
@S Walters, I'm on a swimming, cycling and running training program (triathlon training). My diet isn't one that you should follow... I'm not as discipline as I should be - Dave
The manual says that even if there is not enough juice in the remote to open the door and you need to use the key, you should have the key fob touch the start button and then press it and it should start.
it depends on a lot of things i think. what is most important to you? style, driving dynamics, resell value, ownership cost etc. need to ask yourself those questions first.
I mean it has happened to me (specially when driving a stick shift), that they get stuck between the pedals, I end up taking the flops off and driving bare footed...
That diesel sound when starting up... thats from the ultra high (13:1) compression ratio. Hearing it in person, the skyactive engine actually has a pretty decent growl for an inline 4.
I own a Mazda 6 touring with tech, If I remember right if the battery is dead on the 6 you wave the remote near the push button and you hold down the button and it will start. It's fun car, I hope though they bring a turbo version.
Solid review. You guys do a great job of being thorough with most of your reviews and I appreciate it when you give more than one perspective or opinion. I owned a 2007 Mazda6 and a co-worker of mine is currently leasing a 2011. Both of them, despite being different models have/had issues with the lower control arms. I love the way Mazda vehicles look, drive and feel...but I'm so hesitant to consider them now. Any familiarity with what I'm talking about?
Most keyless push button start cars have a physical key and a special spot to insert or hold the key fob to start the car even if the remote's battery is dead.
Oh, I wasn't picturing it as being a new standalone format, but an addition to the current. Perhaps during the part about the backseat space you cut to a small video that shows how last Tuesday you picked up three friends and perhaps their comment to how well the two in the back felt sitting in the seats. Or on trunk space you cut to some footage of you going for a bike ride, putting the bike in the trunk. Or you show a clip from a roadtrip you took and a shot of the milage from a gas station.
If you want a sportier driving midsize sedan with great fuel economy the Mazda 6 is a great choice. The only negatives for me where that the infotainment/Navi screen was kind of small and looked a few years behind other brands but it was easy to use. The air vents in the center of the dash are placed kind of low. I wonder what the projected 5 years cost of ownership is compared with other cars in the class? (Accord, Altima, Optima, Fusion, Malibu, Sonata)
in a toyota if you run out of battery for the smart key, you just need to put the key on the push-button start or somewhere very close to it. then the car reads the key and it can start.
The infotainment doesn't feel fast or snappy at all. A little slow to respond and process...and the screen should've been larger. They could've easily done that by getting rid of the CD player and buttons, and stretching out the screen and accommodating the buttons on the touchscreen itself. The CD player could've gone in the dash or the trunk.
@Metals-Camera is standard on all but the low volume entry iSport manual. Surpised he really didnt get into all the interior features that are standard. Also, in reference to the dead key fob issue he mentioned, you can still start the car. Just touch the fob to the start button and the car will start.
You are in superb physical condition. I've starting taking my fitness more seriously over the past year and my goal is to look like you ( balanced and not too big). What kind of exercise program and diet are you on?
Hi Dave, So how was the overall ride and refinement on this car ? Did u feel that the roadnoise in the cabin was an issue ? How was the Grand touring equipped ? I enjoyed the review. Thanks for doing this ! :-)
you push the start button with the key fob. the key fob has a built in NFC transmitter that will allow your car to start even if the battery in the key fob is completely drained
Very nice review, to bad they don't have the V6 option but it's a sexy car never the less and I would consider it if I was looking to buy a new car! How are their reliability factor? Are they good as Hondas?
@jonaswang79, I have these vehicles for a full week but I'm skeptical that my subscribers will sit through a VLOG when they expect a 'car review'. In the past I've received nasty comments about showing only 'driving footage'. I'd like to hear some feedback and more specific ideas on this topic from the Everyman Driver Nation - Dave
On the new mazda 3 and 6 when the fob battery is dead, u gain access with the key inside the fob then u rest the rear of the top of the fob over the push button and wait until the red light turns on then u can start the car
@Dave Erickson, I really enjoyed both reviews you did of the 2013 Kia optima SX and the 2014 Mazda 6. I have driven both cars and I’m stuck. Which one would you recommend and why?
my friend has a 2012 or 2011 and he get 42-44 on the highway driving at 60-65 so i dont know what your talking about.I guess it may be the way he drives it and other things such as tire pressure. My friends drives about 30-40000 a year and he has about 55k on his and his gas mileage is still awesome since day one.
2014 mazda 6 vs 2013 accord? which is better? from the reviews ive gone through the accord is better in value and mazda is better drive. i can't quite decide on that -_-
Also...any word on whether or not they'll be offering a diesel option? I had heard rumors that they were. We own a 2012 Passat TDI and if the option is there, we'll be buying diesel whenever it's available.
Dave! Great review, thanks. The Mazda6 is the best looking and best handling mid-size sedan in my opinion! Would love to hear more on your thoughts about it's handing, and the user-friendliness of the infotainment interface. - Now you guys gotta do a review of the 2014 Mazda3 2.0 i Touring, & the 2.5 s Grand Touring w/ tech pkg! like, asap! ;-> p.s. Your voice always sounds great, Dave! Perfect delivery! & wow, nice calves!
When you drive the.cars for review and determine its fuel efficiency, do you use cruise control? I never meet the mixed driving average unless I baby it.
Hi Dave, hope you get to do a review of the diesel when it makes it's way to the States. Very interested in it. My commute is 110 mile each day with 90 of it straight highway. Thought of the Jetta but it seems chincy and the Passat is over priced for what you get.
The infotainment on the Maz6 2k14 is a hit and miss. The big miss is the USB feature. 1) A 32gb USB drive takes 1 minute and 53 seconds to load...every time you start the car. It also always plays the very first song every time. So if you go to the gas station, pump gas and start the car, wait for the USB to load all over again and start from the first track. Big failure in my opinion on that feature. Color display looks outdated with extremely limited colors. Navigation is a little slow.
CmanCorporations Mazda already has diesels for the 6. The most advanced in the world. 2.2 litre, 150 bhp, 380lb foot of torque. mpg 67.4, 0-60 mph 9 seconds. Only in Europe for now. Hope you get them soon.
If this car came with a V6 then my car search would be over. BUT.. it doesn't so I'm kinda on the fence about getting one. I really can't stand a 4 banger. I had an 09 mazda 6 s touring that was nice and quick so I'm not sure why they cut the v6 motor from the lineup. I am very bummed out about that decision .
it has the same amount of power as everyone else in a 4 cylinder. Also 184 might not sound like alot but today cars have alot less object talking away power from the engine such as belt driven fan as such so their alot less power being taken away from the wheels as the engine is tested from the factory at the crank not a dyno
Great review as always. One of my top 5 review channels I go to when looking up cars. and to add to what everyone else has already said... check out dem legs!
@LeadHammer, ok, let me get this straight, my task is to 'present' it on video and let the viewers judge for themselves?! Good to know, thank you - Dave
I have been following mazda6 2014 reviews and so far your review is more convincing and informative. Thanks for all the awesome reviews bro!
Excellent review! I agree that losing the V6 option was a little disheartening. However, I love that Mazda is one of the few brands out there keeping the manual's going and even putting it in the mid trim level and not just the base model.

Dave Erickson is the best automobile reviewer I've found in youtube, love this channel, keep posting videos like this, loved it!
I actually like the energy in his reviews :) Subscribed!
This guy has some serious calf muscles.
I love my 6 for many reasons. It looks good, has plenty of go power, gets great gas mileage, handles like it is on rails, and the safety features are very user friendly and helpful. @tim allen, that's not my grading system - Dave
@Barry Stacy, I hope so too, thanks for the suggestion and my thoughts are with you on those long commutes - Dave
The same holds for this Mazda6. There's a circular cap next to the steering column that you can pop off using the key and behind it is a normal key slot.

@senorgato70, that's why I added the graphic to clarify the difference between mid-size and full size. Did that graphic NOT show up? - Dave
The FOB aux key is just for unlocking the doors. The engine can be started the same by placing the FOB next to the push-button start. Its called emergency start. I sell new Mazdas. Nice review Dave.
@579093, I don't do the cruise control when I'm driving around town or on the highway - Dave
Great review. A small suggestion: If you tend to have these cars for more than just a day, then it would be really cool if you would sort of "vlog" some discoveries, comments, gripes, joys that you experience during your time with the car. Thanks appreciated! your video reviews are pretty neat and decent and i always watch your reviews so i can get have a better insight of the new cars.
Alot of negative comments, i think it was an amazing review! Thank you Dave! :)
The manual says that even if there is not enough juice in the remote to open the door and you need to use the key, you should have the key fob touch the start button and then press it and it should start.
Lol, it was an Exciting yell because I love all you guys Reviews, it's much needed info you provide in buying a car.
@Andres Salazar, why do you say that? What's the difference? - Dave
it depends on a lot of things i think. what is most important to you? style, driving dynamics, resell value, ownership cost etc. need to ask yourself those questions first.
@mark williams, I have SO MUCH music, I'm not sure, sorry - Dave

It looks even better on the road. Saw it and first thought it was a Jaguar.
Hey Dave I noticed Mazda did away with the coolant gauge. What did they replace it with?

@senorgato70, it was a poor choice of words to call it 'comparable'. I will make the RLX public next week, thank you - Dave

I enjoyed the review. Thanks for doing this ! :-)
you push the start button with the key fob. the key fob has a built in NFC transmitter that will allow your car to start even if the battery in the key fob is completely drained
If that is true, Mazda needs to build a smartphone app that utilizes the NFC on phones as well.
Jimmy Chan no point to use the NFC with the smartphone, Bluetooth is enough
Very nice review, to bad they don't have the V6 option but it's a sexy car never the less and I would consider it if I was looking to buy a new car! How are their reliability factor? Are they good as Hondas?
How is the road noise for 2014 Mazda 6 ? Thanks

Wonderful review! Wish to see you OnLY in next review, thanks Dave!
On the new mazda 3 and 6 when the fob battery is dead, u gain access with the key inside the fob then u rest the rear of the top of the fob over the push button and wait until the red light turns on then u can start the car
Dave, would you buy this mazda instead of the sonata?
@Charles2337, actually I don't lift weights. I swim, bike or run everyday :-) Dave
@Dave Erickson, I really enjoyed both reviews you did of the 2013 Kia optima SX and the 2014 Mazda 6. I have driven both cars and I’m stuck. Which one would you recommend and why?
Dave, planning on doing a head-to-head between this and the 2013 Accord?
@pauliu7even, great question! I would lean toward the Kia - Dave
How well is the Mazda6 selling? I have seen exactly one on the road and have not yet seen a Mazda3...
Would you recommend this car to a collage or a graduate student?
what happened to the buy it rent it or lease it?
Mazda does offer a 6 speed manual in the lower trim level.
my friend has a 2012 or 2011 and he get 42-44 on the highway driving at 60-65 so i dont know what your talking about.I guess it may be the way he drives it and other things such as tire pressure. oh i forgot i believe is the month thing isn't. If so what your take on it.

Thanks to this video i decided to buy the mazda 6. Amazing car. Got the 2016 touring model.
When you drive the.cars for review and determine its fuel efficiency, do you use cruise control? I never meet the mixed driving average unless I baby it.
Honda Accord or Mazda 6?
Dave Erickson looks like Lance Armstrong.
I hope the numbers are realistic though. The 2012 Mazda 3 SKYACTIV mpg real world numbers were disappointing
Is this your favorite midsize sedan?
Hi Dave, hope you get to do a review of the diesel when it makes it's way to the States. Very interested in it. My commute is 110 mile each day with 90 of it straight highway. Thought of the Jetta but it seems chincy and the Passat is over priced for what you get.
earned my sub, loved your Mazda3 review with the "oh blank" handles

can you do a review of the 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium ?
speed6? comming back?
they think about making a coupe and/or a speed6 with awd but not sure yet.
@mark williams, maybe you can do some research on this and share it with the Everyman Driver Nation - Dave
that thing would be so badass. Styling looks good add some speed and it would give it that little edge it needs.
Dave what is the start up music ? I love it
the new accord comes with back up camera standard. go for the accord
Did sound a bit like a diesel at 1:54. Considering this car. Want to wait to see what changes for the 2015's.
I think mazda is coming out with a diesel in the third quarter of this year for the mazda 6. I'm excited about that.
CmanCorporations
Mazda already has diesels for the 6. The most advanced in the world.

Nice job. Please review 2013 VW Jetta GLI.
Great review Dave. :)

can this be a good city car?
I miss that 274hp turbo 4 cyl, Mazdaspeed, Mazda6, from back in the day
Wish the touch screen was bigger, small compared to others.
Excellent review ! Very detailed , thanks.
Great review as always. One of my top 5 review channels I go to when looking up cars. and to add to what everyone else has already said... check out dem legs!
The IP unit just doesn't match the flowing lines of the exterior
exterior looks good, I wish they would make a speed6 again though.
@LeadHammer, ok, let me get this straight, my task is to 'present' it on video and let the viewers judge for themselves?! Good to know, thank you - Dave
