- I use Chicken grit or Poultry grit for Mixing potting soil for succulents. I use it also for other more moisture-loving plants but not in as high a quantity. There were questions on previous videos so I thought I would go through my process.

hey I work at a farm store and im only here because a lady came in today for this for her plants. Pro tip farm stores have 20kg bags in the back for farmers with alot of chickens. If u want a rly good deal just ask the cashiers. My store sells them for 22.99. Oh also the crushed oyster shells would add calcium, probably not salt because they should be washed since chickens are meant to eat it. Happy planting
Hey, that's great. I would need to have someone carry the larger bags into my garden area. Those sound like a great deal but I can only manage the smaller bags. Next time maybe when I go on a cement run I can also get the bigger grit!
Thank you, just picked up some chicken grit today at Tractor Supply, now I have your info to guide me! ♥️
Wonderful! I know you will like it and using it as a cover is great too.
I did not know that chicken grit is crushed granite! Thanks for the information Kim. 😃
I am so glad I could help with info for you. Love that chicken grit. Still no blooms for me and I am so jealous of your blooms. I need to take better care of my cacti..I have two.
Thank you!
Great video Kim. This very helpful and informative. I only use the cactus soil and perlite, however the perlite keeps floating to the top when ever I water, which drives me insane. But my plant love it though. I will try to find most if not all and give it a try.
Yes, I know how you feel about those "floaters." But it still works well for drainage.
Hi Kim, thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us...Take care...stay safe...
Thank you, I will
Thanks. It is what I am looking for. 👍
Glad I could help. and thanks for the suggestion for a video.
Great information, thank you ! Love your channel 🌵👍🏼❣️☺️
So nice of you. I appreciate that so much.
Thanks for this video! Very helpful
You're welcome!
I like the looks of that mix! I've been looking around for a good mixture for my jade & string of beads that desperately need to be repotted. Sooo going to try your formula, thank you Kim!🌵🌱
Thank you for this video. I went to a feed store today and the only poultry grit they had said “Crafted with Probiotics “ on the bag. Is this ok?
I have used both plain and probiotics bag and I don't see any difference. Hope you will find the same.
@@KimsGardensandHome . Thanks so much. Perhaps the soil is enriched by the probiotics. I considered rinsing the grit very well before using but I guess I’ll go ahead and use it as is. I actually have two aloe plants that are pretty much the same age and size. I’ll transplant one and see what happens. The one I’m going to transplant doesn’t seem as healthy so if it survives and improves I’ll have a good answer to my question. 😀
Hi Kim, great video, Thank You! What do you use to control pests especially root mealies and spider mites?
I like a systemic for indoor plants. If they go outside in the summer, I just stop using it about a month before time to go outside. (So it won't hurt bees, butterflies..) It is put into the soil and then is running through the stems and roots etc and protects all around. I have a link in the description, an affiliate link. Systemic Insecticide ( I use indoors only ) amzn.to/2rHFEU8
Would you grow Sansevieria (snake plants) in this mixture too?
Yes, this would be great for snake plants. Since they are a succulent type plant whose leaves hold a lot of water.
Hey Kim, tk u for the video!
I have a question, is this ratio 1g soil/1qt hard material good for all succulents types?
Also, would this ratio provide a good enough drainage for them in the rainy Fl summer? I have some succs outside...
I guess that was more than 1 question😁
I think it would be good for the rainy areas since it would drain the water away after the rains stop. Sitting in a puddle is a no-no. In fact, if it doesn't rain in a few days, they may need to be watered. (in pots)
Hey there, so I bought Vigoro all- purpose potting mix, perlite, lava rock, pumice. I’ve tried looking for sand and cannot find any that are used for soil mixtures. Could I use pavers sand or desert sand? Or can I just use chicken grit in replace of the sand? I’m trying to make a potting mixture for my citrus trees as they too need well draining soil.
I use the coarse paver's sand when I get some. Not the "play sand" because it is too powdery and packs too much. The coarser sand is easier for roots to grow there way around thru the soil.
Skip the sand and add more grit and/or perlite
Hi have you ever used coconut coir instead of the soil?
I have never used the coir. Too expensive and not as easy to get.
Can I use activated charcoal or inactive?
I use activated charcoal, sometimes labeled just horticultural charcoal.
does the probiotics in the chicken grit have any negative side effects?
No problem, in fact I don't thing mine had an in it. At least not labeled that way.
I got a 50lb bag at rural king for 7.99
Wow, that's a wonderful price!
Some people drag out anything for clicks.
Why didn’t you just pour everything in the bin!! You make an extra step for no reason
While your video is helpful it was SO slow!! No one cares about chickens - get to the point
Thanks for watching. Have a nice day.
Catheighm Rizzo, rude much?! Why did you even comment if you had absolutely nothing nice to say to Kim? She was explaining to the rest of us that chicken grit is a good soil additive. Thank you Kim
Thanks, Kyle!
you are a lovely lady Kim, ignore the rude entitled people...
@@KimsGardensandHomeHi Kim, I thought the chicks were cute & enjoyed seeing them in the video. I hope you have a blessed day. 😊
