YES!!! I have been looking for this forever! I watched this when it was live. I recorded it on VHS but lost that tape since then. This routine was amazing!
How were they able to land on their backs like that or the jumps with BOTH knees facing forward like a back bend or double quad stretch? Those moves are ridiculously dangerous. I wondered what type of training to prepare a dancer to land in that position safely. If anyone knows please share.
AlphaScholar that was the last year dancers were able to do that in competition . Lots of injuries from other teams trying to copy those moves made UDA ban them
I actually was able to attend one of their last practices before this competition and they had the really thick, soft gymnastics mats in the room as well and every dancer got multiple turns doing that jump down to the back before they actually did the actual routine. I have heard also that it was only legal because they were technically supposed to hit hips down first a split second before backs hit down. Super dangerous if done incorrectly. Pretty sure that’s why it was banned the next year, but it was so amazing in this routine!! Same thing with the other jump down to the knees. If you slow it down, you can see them hit the top of their feet on the ground first right before their knees. The precision on timing for that has to be PERFECT, and they were! :)
Chatted with a few alumni. They physically paid the price for these moves later in life. As the focus moved from “cheer” dance to technical dance the power house couldn’t keep up. Was incredible to watch but with a sense of dread that these girls were hurting themselves. You should have seen when they used to be able to tumble in the routines. Yikes. It’s almost happening again with the hip hop “tricks” teams are doing. Again “cheer” hip hop.
This routine started my ENTIRE journey into the world of collegiate dance and choreography! Thank you for uploading this.
Best routine ever!
AWESOME. Thanks for finally posting my favorite routine of all time!
Favorite routine ever.
