    Nice video Rory!
    The Inlander is run as a hook and pull contract, like Journey Beyond's Ghan and Indian Pacific, any rail company can operate it. The reason for a 2800 is due to a Long End Leading ban imposed state-wide due to a collision in Central Queensland, to get the passenger carriages in Townsville the locomotive has to LEL roughly 15 kilometres along the NCL. A 2300 class (GT22LC-2 12 cylinder turbocharged 645 diesel engine) fitted with a toilet ran this service prior. The 2300 has better acceleration, which helps at the crossing loops along the Mount Isa Line which are limited to 25kph in either direction, even if it is on the main.

    As much as I love train travel, I don’t think I could do it sitting up overnight in that seat. I tried it on the Spirit of Tasmania once and that was bearable but that seat had plenty of legroom, recline and width. So thanks for this video, you did it so I don’t have to!

    Hello Rory. Love the videos. Live in Townsville and I did the Inlander 2020 when with COVID the 1/2 lounge was out of bounds. Trip from Mt Isa was long in one seat, but still the way to go. I noted the arm rest were mentioned here. As a larger gentleman they do hinder movement. On the spirit of the outback this year I couldn’t sit in the dining area. But COVID scare had very small numbers so I ate in the twin room using the pull down sink as the tray rest. I am curious on the business plan. Some not so squeezed travel inland would be good. Cheers for the vid.

    I don't understand why all the passengers have to be squashed into car A while car B remains empty. I know that car B is held in reserve should there be an air conditioning problem in car A (is the air conditioning really that fragile?), but as the seats in car B are unsold why not let the passengers spread out over the two cars? So long as the total number of passengers does not exceed the seating capacity of car A (the car with less seats) so that they could all be moved into one car in case of an air conditioning failure, why not let them spread out? I thought that crew member did not have a customer friendly attitude in telling you to leave car B.
    I agree with you that it is nice that they provide a 'basic' meal for all passengers included in the price of the ticket. At least that makes sure nobody starves! However, the problem is tht they don't really offer anything else substantial for purchase. That chicken sandwich looked nice and what a pleasant surprise to see white bread rather than the brown bread sandwiches which have become the norm here in the UK. As you may have guessed I prefer white bread. I think I would have liked that sandwich. The idea of having the same sandwich for both meals is not good. In this case I wouldn't have minded as the sandwich was something I think I would have liked, but what if it had been something that I disliked? I assume there was no choice and no vegetarian option. The breakfast was OK as well but again the quantity was unsatisfactory.
    I don't really see the purpose of that lounge, although you did make use of it. It would be nice if some of the area occupied by the lounge could be used for a buffet counter service of more food including hot food. They don't need a kitchen as such, just refrigerated storage, hot water and a microwave or two (in case one should break down!).
    Does everybody in Australia sleep that early? 2115 is a child's bedtime. Are there airline style individual overhead lights?

    • @RoryDing
      @RoryDing  2 года назад +1

      I guess the reason they don’t let people use car B is they don’t need to clean that carriage after arrival 😂
      And the lounge is good because it’s much quieter than sitting in Car B, i agree they should find ways to improve the food. All they need is a freezer and a microwave 😂
      From my memory it does have reading lights. I’ll have to check out again the next time I travel.

    Wow rory. Sounds like that trip could be used as a torture device :P Using such old rolling stock, and poor onboard service, plus such a slow service, it would seem that it's only a pax service as a last thought, and I'd imagine not protiable enough to upgrade the service. Being the same height as yourself, I get the pain of showers designed for short people :)

    Yes the small little details when it comes to cleanliness - esp the grime and small food particles caught between the tray latch and in between the seats is quite a put off! For a 21hr journey, you'd expect at least microwaved preheated meals or something instead of bloody sandwiches! Goes to show how much they care about bush rail.

    Ah good memories! I was in Townsville between doing all the QR trains (Inlander, Westlander and Spirit of the Outback) and went and watched James Bond: Spyfall in Townsville during an overnight connection. And now James Bond is out again :-)
    I’m super sorry you don’t get to use the incredible sleeper cabins anymore. I just watched your video and discovered they were removed in 2015! The single sleeper is DELIGHTFUL and you get a big single window all to yourself. The air-conditioning and quiet ride is magnificent on these, and you can’t believe how old they are. There’s no need to replace them! Just gives us more of the same please.

    Not for me Rory. If the train is as slow as that I'd drive. They really should do a better job with food than those cold sandwiches and a sprinkling of cereal. Nothing would prevent them from installing a freezer and a couple of microwaves. They have power points.

    Hi Rory.
    The seats do look comfy, but identical lunch and dinner ?... that's a real letdown.
    I can understand with such low passenger numbers, it's not worth having a hot meal service, but I do think they could provide something hot for dinner. ... even if it's microwaved . ( It could be kept frozen in an onboard freezer).
    As for breakfast, surely even a mini muffin or a slice of toast/ raisin bread wouldn't be that costly to include.
    Definitely a relaxing scenic way to see the outback 👍

    Thanks again Rory, for another informative video. I recall travelling on that service many years ago when it did have hot meals provided and sleeping cars. The burgers served were delicious. It seems that the carriage you rode in was most likely a former first class one, with 2 + 1 seating. You made comments on a previous video about the lights being left on overnight, so I'd recommend passengers use eyeshades, which I always take on overnight flights. The food is a bit spartan, and in limited quantity. It's a pity they don't provide a limited supply of hot food, for purchase which could be kept frozen or chilled on board and heated in a microwave. Anyway, it's good that you recognise QR for still providing a service to these outback towns with limited population. Other states aren't so lucky, at least we in NSW seem assured also of retaining long distance trains with new ones being ordered to replace the XPT and Xplorer services. It's not the network it once was, but still better than many other states.

    Great video! QR policy seems to be cram everyone together so our staff don’t have to clean so much (not that it appears they do), those seats are in a dire need of deep cleaning … shame, after a ticket check they should allow passengers to spread out.
    … really appreciate you doing these videos Rory!

    Rory, what did you do once you arrived in Mount Isa, where did you stay, and how long did you stay before you returned?
    It would be great if you have any recommendations of what to do or where to stay when you reach your destinations.

    after having watched several of your clips of train journeys within Australia I decided it was time to subscribe Rory...I don't think there are many Aussies doing this sort of thing, promoting what we have within our own country...as a Victorian dying to travel again, if only within my own country, you are giving me ideas travel methods...as I've written before, I've done the Melb-Syd-Melb XP train a couple of times but I'd really like to explore some other rail journeys within our country...so curious, which state do you actually call home between your rail/flight trips..?? it can't be Victoria because you're travelling whilst we can't..look forward to more and must look back at others I've missed..
    I've done four overseas trips since 2006, the last two have literally been around the world...there's two days I've lost coming home from LA to Melbourne..chuckle...my very first trip in 06 was via business class...trips no: 2 & 3 were economy and trip 4 was premium economy...if I ever get to fly out of here again it'll be premium economy all the way...

      @RoryDing  2 года назад +1

      Hi carol thank you so much for subscribing! I live in Canberra but I also have a base in Adelaide so I’m staying there at the moment 😊
      Yeah I used to just travel in economy when I fly overseas but I might give premium economy a go in the future 😀

    • @grandmasmagic3858
      @grandmasmagic3858 2 года назад

      @@RoryDing I found premium economy was doable, at least when doing international flights but with domestic I'd stick to economy. It's almost the comfort of business just a way lot cheaper.

    It's a shame they don't have a proper train. What an amazing view all the way, but you have to sit, cramped in squalor to see it. I'd rather pay much more and have an old-school cabin train. Those seats and trays look absolutely gross. Even if they just ran a decent tourist train once per month or something for a better experience, at least we could book it. I for one will not ever be getting on that train. Thanks for taking the time to make the video though. Thumbs up!

    Another great train review Rory - thanks. The scenery is stark and beautiful and it is such good news that Queensland Rail is committed to these inland services. Its amzing how the train almost seems to pull into the big mine when you arrive in Mt Isa. Even if no hot food, how hard would it be to offer a different sandwich for dinner - but you were well prepared for that😀. I noted that the loco was in Aurizon livery - does Aurizon have the contract to haul this service or is the loco leased to Queensland Rail I wonder?

    This service is an embarrassment. no Club Car, no sleepers. Pathetic. So much for the Qld Govt investing in the outback. It could be a great tourist adventure like the Spirit of the Outback. Spirit of the Nth West.

    Congrats! you have been on every single Main Line QLD Train now!
    Theres now doubt that these trains are definitely ageing but I appreciate that these trains are still running.
    Also, I thought you might be interested in this news. QLD Rail recently announced that they are purchasing new diesel Locomotives for The Spirit Of the Outback, Westlander and Inlander. So, If there is money being spent on Locomotives, Maybe New Carriages will come for these services soon. *Hopefully.
