Le site archéologique de Knossos est considéré comme l’un des sites les plus importants de Grèce et la plus ancienne ville d’Europe.
Le palais de Knossos est situé à 5 kilomètres au sud d’Héraklion. Site incontournable d’une visite en Crète, le palais de Knossos - ou Cnossos - retrace la civilisation minoenne, qui se développa sur les îles grecques (de Crète à Santorin), entre 2700 et 1200 avant J-C. Au début du 20ème siècle, l’archéologue Arthur Evans pensait avoir affaire à un palais des rois mycéniens, puis s’aperçut qu’il s’agissait d’une autre civilisation inconnue.
Par référence au roi Minos - qui aurait jadis gouverné l’île -, il nomma cette civilisation « Minoenne ». La rénovation - controversée - des vestiges et les représentations de taureaux ont fait resurgir le mythe du minotaure et du labyrinthe.
