My third grade teacher gave me advice back in 1992 prior to my first day in my classroom. He said to find something that went well during the day and focus on that and try not to dwell too much on what did not go well during the day. This is year 27 for me, and that is the advice that I give to new teachers. Thank you for your presentation.

So great to hear from a fellow veteran! I am beginning my 24th year of teaching and I am still learning so much! That's one of the best parts about teaching, every year we get new kids, new personalities, new backgrounds, etc. Creates new-ness every year!

I really want to be a teacher when I grow up. I really want to start watching videos really early about this stuff. I am only 11. Thank you for these tips I am just getting more excited to start a teaching career when I am older. If I don’t teach when I am older I am going to be sad.

I'm starting year 31 (!). Thank you! It's true - experienced teachers (including me) fall into a pattern, tiredness, etc. I had your enthusiasm when I started and want to bring that back. When I started I could tell which teachers should just get it over with and retire. I didn't understand how people could wind up like that. Now I do. I'm not there, but want to regain that spirit again. :) Your videos remind me of the attitude I once had had. Time for me to watch YOUR videos and begin anew.

I currently work as a after school teacher (k-2) and people always look at me as another daycare worker but it's so not true.
I definitely do lessons planning monthly and each week we do a new topic. This week is "we can do it week" they can build self esteem, do hw on time, be respectful.
A thing I would work on is to stop listening for other teacher's opinions on my class.

I definitely agree about taking one day a week as a no schoolwork day! Another thing that I find helpful is having a cut off time for working in the evenings. Mine is usually 6pm because that's what time we get kicked out of the building and I try not to take work home with me then (sometimes I leave earlier and do stuff from home instead, in which case my cut off time would be later). I think that's such an important rule to make as a new teacher to help you from burning out, and I only break it if things absolutely have to be done by the following day. I also have a bed time that I try to stick to so I get enough sleep!

Im a 17 year old guy and Teaching high school history has been an interest of mine for a while. Starting to prioritize this interest over my others so I’m looking for info on how to connect with students and what to expect. I didn’t have a good high school experience so I feel like that would push me harder to help to build relationships with students rather than just be an authority figure in the room. I’ve always had a desire to be in the position of helping others and I think teaching is my best option. Thanks for the info 🙏🏼

How can I get hired when I have little experience when I must be hired to EARN experience? 😂🤔
Anybody else ever had this issue?

    • @PocketfulofPrimary

This is super difficult and I have been there as well. In your interviews, I would stress your passion as much as possible (new teachers tend to be SUPER energized and passionate which is an asset) and discuss ways you are already trying to improve your practice (completing webinars, reading PD books, etc.). This will show them that despite your lack of experience, you are trying to grow and learn as much as you can which is the type of teacher they should want at their school!

Every week I look forward to a fun and awesome video and Michelle has yet to fail to come up with a video that is not fun and awesome!! I’ve really been intrigued by all of these inspiring and fantastic videos! I’m going to come back to these in the future because I can 100% guarantee that I will struggle at first but I know I will get better😂😂❤️❤️

I would love a PD video please. I wish I had this my first year. I'm going to be in year five this year-third year in the district, second year in the building. I still feel like I need some PD.

Amen on tip #10! If you're lucky, one of your teammates brought donuts for everyone.
