  • Hello my vintage lens enthusiasts! Today we’re looking at the Auto Sears 55mm f1.4. I bought this lens on Ebay looking for a cheap no-name brand lens but after taking some shots with it I realized this lens is a sleeper. It punches well above its price point. Wide open it’s a little soft but stopped down this lens is really sharp. It produces a nice crisp image. It turns out that Sears simply rebranded lenses made by renowned Japanese manufacturers Mamiya and Tomioka. If you’re looking to buy a sharp and fast vintage lens without that high vintage lens price this is a lens to consider. All the photos in this video were shot with a Circular Polarizer stacked on top of a Tiffen Enhancing filter. More info and sample photos on the blog linked below.

Do you like these types of vintage lenses or do you prefer the older lenses with more optical imperfections?

I love vintage lenses but it's hard to figure out what mount they have and which conversion I need to mount it on my Canon M50

This was my first lens on my first camera. My dad gave me a Sears TLS in '71 and I took so many great photos with it. I lent it to a friend in Florida and he lost it when his canoe capsized in the Peace River while he was finding mammoth bones. Years later, while visiting a photographer friend in Atlanta, he showed me his gear cabinet. There, on a shelf, was an old Sears TLS with the 55 1.4! I told him the story of my first camera, and he handed it to me, and said, "Keep it!" Still have it in my camera cabinet. (Back in the day, I had also bought the Tomioka auto Tominon 55 1.2, which is what I keep on the camera now.)

Cool story. A genuinely kind human moment. You must be shooting up a storm now that you have the camera in hand again. Sometimes gear can be sentimental. Thanks for the comment.

This lens was produced by Tamioka for Sears. It s an excellent lens that produces a really nice renditions. I don't use this lens to compete with modern lenses but, rather for the unique characteristics of its imagery...

Thank you for that info. This lens really is a beauty. I was so surprised by the craftsmanship on this lens. I could tell right away it wasn't Sears that made this. lol. I want to build a bigger audience of vintage lens users so I can make more of these videos. So I really appreciate the comment.

This lens is simply the best vintage for portraits. I have it and I love it, the depth or - 3D pop - it offers is amazing.

Hi Vasko. I really like the look you on the street shots with the deeper green foliage. I find the R5 colours really muted when it comes to green foliage so I’m always looking for ways to make them more vibrant and richer. Is this due to your pre-set as well as your stacked filters? And are you still working on the pre-set?

Thanks for the video. I have this lens as well, and like you, usually use a polarizer with it and also with my older Pentax and Nikon lenses. I like the photo processing you did that removed the dull look and brightened up the colors. I have struggled to get consistent results to correct the dull look. I checked your editing videos using high pass filters but did not see this type of edit. Were you using a high pass on these or other techniques? Thanks

You're welcome thanks for the comment. It really is an awesome lens. I was using a Tiffen Enhancing filter on the lens as well as the CPL to make the colors pop a bit more. I also used a Lightroom preset that I created to make the images more vibrant.
I haven't added the Lightroom preset to my store yet. I'm still testing it out. If you're interested in the preset email me via my webpage and i'll send it to you for free. I could use some feedback on it before I make it available for everybody. Here is my contact link www.vaskoobscura.com/contact

Hunt down the Sears Auto EE 50mm f1.4 next, it has a domed out curved rear glass. It's the lens that came with the SEARS AUTO TLS camera. I got lucky on FB marketplace Auto TLS, Sears Auto EE 50mm f1.4, Auto Sears 35mm f2.8, + Auto Sear Tele-Zoom 90-230mm f4.5 for $60 and they are all in mint almost brand new condition, even the leather cases still has the silica gel in cloth bags. I have out of camera test clip of the Sears Auto EE 50mm if you want to check that out.

Sure send me the link. I’m always interested in learning about new lenses. What’s different about your lens?

@@vaskoobscura_ the Auto EE 50mmf1.4 does not have a flat rear element, it stead has a curved domed out rear element. Not sure what's the advantage/advantage of that as I am new in vintage lenses too. The main concern tho is when adapting domed out rear element with focal reducers as it may touch touch the glass on the adapter. I also can not find more info about the lens or who makes them. There is one Japanese blog site that looked into the Auto EE but the writer also is trying to figure out who made them.

It's not a sleeper. People know how good it is. You're late to the party.
