In the early years of his presidency, Nelson Mandela knew, deep down, that it would be sport that would unite his nation, and get disparate groups playing on the same side. Madiba's hands-on approach to the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations not only elevated spirit of the teams but the passions of his people.

I still get bleary eyed watching this. A great tribute to a Great Man and one of Africa's True Statesmen. Who can forget the unlikely partnership between
the "Madiba" and the legendary Francois Pienaar...? One who united perhaps even biefly, a deeply divided country behind a sports team that for many still
held the memory of being the symbol of a hated regime. The other who recognised and took that support ofthe people, to galvanise a team that so many considered the "underdogs", to excel even themselves and triumph on the world's stage in 1995. It was an extremely dangerous stance for a still "newly elected" president to take, yet it led to that momentous victory which set the "Springboks" on their path to their rightful place acclaimed by all at the pinnacle of the sport..!!
