Hi.....I'm an Amateur Radio Operator. I have a handheld DMR radio and hotspot, will that work for anything? I'm moving to Anchorage, AK soon. Money isn't too much of a concern. What scanner do you recommend? Thanks.

With encryption on the rise, is it even worth shelling out hundreds of dollars for the better stuff nowadays?
My county (Clark NV) is losing agency year after year to the big E. I've got a 325 and have been wanting the SDS for that sweet simulcast decoding. But that big E scares me...

We should assume that all new radio systems will be going encrypted, especially if it is P25, Edacs, or Province.
Yes, VHF, UHF, and HF can also be encrypted. Some frequencies have been for many years. Think about all the TAC channels.
Usually, it is done when agencies switch to a trunking system.
If you have a Uniden SDS 100 or 200, you can pick up trunked channels as long as they are not encrypted.
If you have a Uniden BC125AT, you won't be able to pick up any trunked channels as this scanner is only analog and does not receive any digital channels.
You have to do plenty of research to learn if the scanner you want will work in the area in which you want to listen.
Lucky for me at least as of now, I have good success with the BC125AT, as the areas in which I listen to are still using unencrypted HF, VHF, and UHF. It is a large rural area that has networks of repeaters.
If I drive 15 miles to a different county, all the communication is digital, so I don't receive any local to that area transmissions. I do receive Simulcasted medical and fire on analog channels. This does help somewhat in identifying the are where the emergency is and I can reroute long before Waze tells me to.
I hope that this offers some of you some help. I know that when I got back into scanning it was a bit of a learning curve.
Lucky that I had a Uniden BCT 7 Beartracker from almost 30 years ago as a base station. It was receiving non-stop. So, I decided to get back into the hobby.

@@ScannerSchool Good Luck. I am battling Pancreatic Cancer since I was diagnosed in March. I was going through chemo but the tumor grew from 5.0cm to 6.8 cm. Now I have started radiation therapy. The surgeon has to shrink the tumor so that he has room to remove it.
      The pain is also unbearable.
I've not much to do but play with my radios now, and try to offer some help to people.
I wish you a good outcome. My doctors keep everything quiet from me.
