I vote for keeping it all Toyota w/ a turbo 2JZ and a nice low stance for ripping up the pavement on the twisties. Low and fast, but keep it in "sleeper" mode, appearance wise.

Be careful with it, I got a funny feeling this one is more worth original or in a condition it could be put back to original. Choping it up to make somthing else out of it is borderline crasy. Keep it as original as possible (exept engine and drivetrain).

Dad bought one just like it right after he came home from Vietnam in 69, I was 8 and my sister was 6, the day he brought it home he took us all out to the drive in movie, he rolled the back window down and sister and I were setting on it watching the movie, mom gave us a Shasta Root Beer to SHARE..... I popped it open and chugged the whole thing, my sister started crying and ratted me out! Dad made us set back in the back seat, about 5 minutes later I wasn't feeling so great and soon chucked up all 16 oz of soda all over the brand new 12 hour old interior of Dads Toyota! It's burnt into my memory mostly because mom and dad reminded me about it for the next 15 years or so!

But, after learning the back story of the car with Mr. Yamamoto and how it was an integral part of the early days of his business, I think Paul needs to contact Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits and either sell the car outright, or be commissioned by them to restore it.
I don't know if Paul has the background and resources to do a proper restoration. I know he is an awesome fabricator and can build some awesome off-road machines, but doing a restoration of a vehicle such as this may be beyond his grasp due to time restraints.

@@Patrick.Weightman I agree, but the idea of a 2J in a Crown is fascinating. Friend of mine pulled the V6 from his Tacoma and swapped a 2UZ from a V8 4Runner, that would be ideal.
And as always, you can compensate torque with gearing. Which is why I'm running 4.88 behind my 2TR Taco with a R155

Sleeper all the way. Don't do anything wild and crazy with it really, like leave it a nice soft blue color and a vehicle that's something your family can cruise in with a nice interior. I think having that kind of a car that you can enjoy and that you can drive every day is exactly what that needs to be...just make sure it's hiding a monster under the hood.

I say go completely weird. Do a 2J engine swap, but not the one everyone thinks. The diesel... Make it run on fry oil from that place your mom works at. Not every vehicle has to go fast or climb mountains. Sometimes you just need a slow going to town rig that makes people hungry as you drive by.

    • @Plainman98

Make it a 2 engine greasel. Small fry oil burning diesel up from with wicked fast rear end hidden engine. Sounds crazy and hard.

For the price of swapping in an LS, one can easily build a Toyota 22R with a 500hp. Build a 22R and keep it Toyota.

That is rare even here in asia. Great find! Being owned by a japanese probably explains how it got over there. Those cars were the japanese equivalent of a mercedes benz. I had a 1978 sedan and it was a pretty great ride. I wish i had kept it. For a motor swap you can use the motor from the FJ to keep it all toyota and it would still be a motor from pretty much the same time period.

I like what you’re thinking, a straight 6 out of an old FJ? Yeah, it might need a few go fast parts to make it leave 11s on the tarmac but it’d sound good doing it 👍😃

Definitely gotta keep it all Toyota. Either the 2jz or get a donor V8 2UZ from a Tundra or Sequoia. Some others where saying make it off-road worthy which would also be really cool. Make it compete with Matt’s Moarvair.

I think doing a 2jz would be really cool while keeping it Toyota. I also think you have quite a few v8s so it would be something different. I’m not against a v8 though because it would be the most cost affective. If it was just completely restored on the outside and inside with a 2jz and different wheels and tires it would be a amazing build

That's got to be one of the first Toyota's in the US. As a kid in the 1960's, I remember when Japanese cars started showing up on the streets. The main reason was their low cost and fuel efficiency. That's when gas went from about 20 cents a gallon way up to 50 cents a gallon by the early to mid 1970s. haha!
