    I just saw an old video of the Ohio Players from the 1970's and the guitar player had a Gibson double neck sg, and it had the same head stock .

    I have found an old one in the bin area in southwest London, luckily wasn't raining. I only had to change the original tuners.
    It is actually quite good, I would change the pot, the rest is good.. Especially if free

    I have this guitar in "off" white. I love it and my input socket is not that close to the controls. Similar position for sure but nowhere near that close! Factory balls up??

    Split coils, put switch where input jack is, move jack to bottom like other 2 humbucker guitars.

    I feel like the shape of the headstock is the closest I’ve found to a gibson one if I’m honest. The design i think is okay but i see why people might not like it

    I have an older red one, bought 2nd hand for 140 quid, as good as 600 quid SG's I've played, pickups are good, ideal for my stuff, only quip is when I play a open D chord there is a light micro tonal issue on the 2nd fret G string, which I know could be fixed, just havent been arsed to get it done yet, I tend to play a Tokai LP for open rhythm stuff these days, those are a good guitar, if you get an older one.

    I'm between Vintage Chrome Hardware V100IT Flamed Iced Tea and Harley Benton SC-550 Plus EMG FTF.
    Which one you would suggest ?
    I will replace the pickups of course. I want a kick ass guitar for rock & roll in style of GnR, Motley, Def Leppard etc.

    Well...I have the same model, different colour, and rhe jack is spaced exactly the same as the knobs.
    Yours is a second or manufacturing error in some update of design or something.

    Dave, that jack socket and pots looked wrong to me. I’ve sold a few lately and have three in the room and so checked. None are like that. If that’s new, they’ve either changed it lately (seems unlikely), or someone made that on a Friday afternoon, or when they were pissed.
    Shame, as they’re generally really well built, decent sounding guitars. I’ve also found you can easily set them up with a really low action without having to dress frets or add some fall away high up the neck.
    I also have an old Westfield waiting to be spruced up for sale. Like many Westfields, whether SG, LP or Strat, it’s a pretty well built guitar.

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  3 года назад +1

      I do like the Westfields, if you come across a black one with the thin neck profile and you wanna sell please let me know :)

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar

    Hi Dave! I have one I bought new in 2003 at the latest - I think they called it 'wine red' at the time... Plenty of room between the jack and tone knobs. The neck is super slim, one-piece body, I shit you not!! More similar in shape to an SG than the modern VS6's due to a lawsuit which came later I believe . It cost £179 new, I got seymour duncan JB and Jazz in now and I would never get rid of it! There's no writing whatsoever on the back of the headstock and it has all-metal tuners... In my opinion these ones are that people need to find second hand for an absolute bargain!

  • @2112GTR
    @2112GTR 3 года назад +4

    Thing is Dave, the jack socket placement even on Gibson SG isn't any better, is it?
    I've never really taken much notice to be honest but I have 2 Gibson SGs (plus an Epiphone SG Special as well, now!) and they all have the jack placement like that, right up against the neck tone control!! I suppose they are keeping it the same as the original ones were.
    They did change it on some SG's in the 70's, and you'll see some with the jack on the side like a Les Paul. Why the hell they don't do this with SG's as well is beyond me, there is certainly the room to do it!!!
    Those SGs have the three way switch basically between the neck volume and tone controls, which is fucking stupid, and looks shit as well, tbh!!

    • @Kevin.Hearty
      @Kevin.Hearty 3 года назад +1

      Yip, Vintage are just copying Gibson and Epiphone with the silly output jack placement. ESP LTD, and even Harley Benton have the socket on the side on their SG copies.

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I just checked this out, some Gibson SG guitars also have jack inputs here, WTF. Its a mistake so why copy it?

    Which do you like better? The red SG if it was black or this one? I'm still wondering why you didn't refinish the red one but I'm sure you have your reasons. The knob thing really is weird. The output is already so close to the tone that it's a famously easy break/crack hazzard, this seems like it's even weaker. I guess your supposed to "set and forget" Lol. Stay Safe

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  3 года назад +1

      The red one is a dream to play but I wanted a black one just like it but it doesn't exist so went with a black Vintage SG, but when I'm finished with it its gonna be a keeper :)

    It's the Bart Simpson head headstock!!! Cowabunga dude!!!!
    I kinda dont find the shape too offensive. It reminded me of the Harley benton shape.
    I have a HT 5 Blackstar that I play through headphones, and just found out how to use it properly lol. Rob Chapman did a vid bout 10 years ago lol and said leave it in standby mode then play with headphones 🤯🤯🤯. Ok Dave love your vids play and the Ransom stuff ROCKS BRUH!!! Hmmm give the Bart Simpson headstock a haircut with a jigsaw and put some witches hat knobs on the pots a la Angus style. All fun and games new Gibson’s ain’t perfect either so just get it where you like it and have fun.
    By the way I love SG’s so keep the videos coming 😎🎸👍

    I totally agree with you about the stupid Jack socket and the crazy headstock, both of which would be deai breakers for me. I have the Hartley Benton custom version which is better in those respects. It suffered from terrible neck dive but I moved the front strap pin to the tip of the top horn and that worked a treat. I wish you luck with your modifications.

    Love the honesty of your vids Dave, entertaining and interesting both.
    My spin...I've had two Vintage, LP Paradise and one of those 80's style Strats in pale green.
    Sure they look nice, pups are half decent, had a nice chug on the strat, but QC issues on both. Had trouble keeping the necks straight too, needed constant adjustment so be warned on that.
    Wanted to love em but eventually got rid.
    You might want to open up those electrics too. A recent review, check it out, of a Vintage 52 Butterscotch Tele revealed the absolute most cack handed wiring you have ever seen.
