Here at Calvey Homestead, we are trying to become as self-sufficient as possible. We grow a garden every year and raise a good portion of our own meat. We also try to support local farms as much as possible. We love cooking, canning, and preserving. We are lucky enough to have other family members who live this lifestyle as well. We currently live in a 43 foot fifth wheel camper that is stationary on my parents’ farm. Follow us for a glimpse into our happy homestead!

Eating the oldest meats first. Make an Inventory of all your meats with dates so you can see what you already have to work with. I just used a laundry basket to pull it out. Then put each type of meat on a shelf with the oldest in front. Keep vegetables and fruits, butter etc on top shelves. Just in case your freezer ever stops working so the blood doesn't leak
    on the food below it.

Great tips! I definitely need to do a thorough inventory and meal plan based off that!

Just pulled 2 steaks from the freezer dated 2021. Need to get through about 10 more packs of meat before going to the butcher to reload.

If you pull out a bunch from the bottom 2 shelves of the 1st freezer, be careful as the freezer will be top weight heavy and easy to tip over.

What is the point of having so so so much food

The amount of food in our freezers is mainly because we raise or harvest our own meat. So when we raise a hog, we get the entire hog back at one time. Same with deer, when my husband harvests them, we process and have a whole deer to put in the freezer at one time. It is a very secure feeling as well. As meat prices skyrocket, it feels good to know I don’t have to pay those prices because we already have it and we raised it ourselves. We eat this meat throughout the year and by the time we “restock” we have eaten our way through the meat that is in there now. (And if we don’t, we rotate “oldest” to “newest”)
It’s totally fine to buy meat at the store though, I’m very open minded when it comes to how other people do things. It’s cool to see how everyone does things. 😊
