  • If I study a language for 10 hours a day how much can I learn in 30 days? I stayed with a host family in Seoul, South Korea for a month to try this out. It's my first time in Korea and the first time I've ever studied this much in a day. Let's see what's possible!

As someone currently learning Korean after perfecting Tagalog-and I am sure Pearl never intended to imply otherwise- this is an extremely intensive and straining way of learning a language. I won't speak to the effectiveness of this particular method as I am sure the only way I'd know is if I tried it myself, and as Pearl is really exceptional at learning languages this may be more effective for her than others. But for anyone who wants to learn Korean, the language is all about steady retention. Grammar in Korean is wildly tough to get a grasp of. Now, this is rather ironic, but as an example, in Korea there are academies that have children getting as little as 4 hours of sleep a day because they do almost nothing but studying. This is all done for pure memorisation so they can pass a series of exams. But the actual learning retention is really poor, because they just don't actually absorb most of what they're remembering. This is the same problem when trying to fast-track a language, especially one like Korean. Repetitiveness is definitely the key for me so far. Pearl is absolutely right with her concluding thoughts at the end of the video. There is no 30-day or 60-day or 100-day railroad to learning languages like this. Good luck, everyone!

Repetition was immensely useful for me earlier on using Japanese, even though now im good enough at it that i dont need anki or any other form of repetition, I know im gonna be needing a whole lot of it when i eventually start Korean. Heck, maybe I'll find that I actually missed the process of being new to a language.

reminds me of learning to play a music instrument, takes about 6 months of (almost) everyday practice to get to solid beginner, advanced beginner to intermediate level at 1 year, but at least 3 years of playing for an advanced intermediate level, going past that stage takes natural talent, and another 2-3 years to make it to advanced, the small % of people who make it to 1 year plateau there, and an even smaller % advance past that stage - I started at 9 and play several music instruments, also taught many beginning players, I made it to advanced with only 1 instrument, prob because I formally studied it at university, getting close to advanced on a second instrument rn, also found that resuming intense practice in middle age (40s) after not playing anything for almost 20 years, was improving my mental health, wonder if learning a new language does that too!?

Learning Korean on and off for the last 12 years, as a hobby, I have noticed a couple of things; I always level up after spending time there and to help memorize and recognize words in spoken Korean (probably the same with other languages), you have to use those words, frequently, yourself, to recognize them in the listening process.

For research, she had to have a reading knowledge of French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, not just in their modern forms but those of the 15th-17th centuries. She said once, "I'm always studying," even during breaks and vacations. But she loved it, so it didn't seem like a chore.

It was fun to see your studies and visit to Korea, An Min. Though, I have to ask, was one of the male performers at the cultural village break dancing? Cuz it really looked like it. Also, I've been teetering on studying Old English, and been a bit shy about committing to it. After seeing how dedicated you are to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, I'm encouraged to just go for it. Thank you so much for sharing our adventures.

Thank you Michael. Normally I don’t get confused, but during my Korean class in Japan they use Japanese a lot and then switch to Korean so I do mix words up in those situations.

    • @OrientalPearl

Korean is challenging for sure because of the grammar and the levels of formality in speaking. If it still had Chinese characters it would be just as hard as Japanese.
