There's a trope named after this franchise "The Genie Knows Jack Nicholson". The movies are set in the past well before any of these people were born, the genie knows who they are (he's magic and can see the future) but noone else in the movie will. It could also be explained the genie is so powerful he's aware he's in a movie so does references for the people watching.
Well all of Genie's scenes was Robin Williams going off the rails. The actual movie was about Aladdin finding his long-lost father... Genie had a lot of screentime but it was pretty much ALL Robin Williams being wacky and had no bearing on the plot at all. You could have removed him entirely from the movie and it wouldn't have changed the story at all... you'd miss out on some catchy songs and some funny scenes, but the plot would be the exact same.

GOD, I miss Robin's comedic genius. Feels so long ago I was crying so hard when I found out he killed himself. Even played Genie in a local summer theater production. Had such a blast doing that.

A pretty nice touch that the "Steamboat Genie" was whistling a different tune than in the original scene, a part of the famous folk song "Turkey in the Straw" specifically. And this song was also used in a later part of Steamboat Willie as its own separate music number.
