Well I am a very lucky girl to be able to have all these amazing experiences, just wish Simon was there to enjoy it with me! Who would of thought us buying a broken boat off ebay would lead to all the 12 months later!
Massive thanks to all the fellas on the steamboat for letting me help out! For more videos on this boat and other steam boats check out Wesley's channel -

Lawrie (Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels) is going to be soooo jealous when he sees this 😀
Gemma, we were blessed to make your acquaintance and have you aboard. Amazing what connections one can make on the water. Please do bring Simon and the kids the next time you find yourselves out this way. Surely you could do with a visit to Tahoe.
Gemma, we're so happy you enjoyed your trip onboard. Thank you for the help navigating and in the engine room. Please come visit again, and bring the rest of the the family along. We'll make a steamboater out of you yet!
Wes, it is good to see you and Steve aboard! I’ve got to come out and visit you guys and go for a ride on what I helped in the build.
@@TunTavernWarrior2 thanks! We'd love to have you aboard. Been a long time!
Theres nothing like steam for making any machine or craft/vehicle feel absolutely alive, I think its the throbbing pumping pulsing respirant nature of the steam pulsing throughout the fibre of it all. good job for getting Gemma to oil your engine. The engine sounded wonderful on headphones on youtube. such beautiful sunsets there to.
What does she draw mate? Not much by the looks of it.
@@marvindebot3264 almost six feet under the skeg at the Stern. The bulk of the hull is a bit less
Look at our Gemma go!
Steam boat Captain
Engineer
Trick camera work
Narration
You go girl! Looks like you had so much fun 😁
Gemma you are so delightful! Your energy is so wonderful.
Glad you came to our side of the pond for a bit!
I love seeing steam engines working. There is nothing more beautiful than Machinery like that with all the moving Parts with all the synchronization. I'm really glad you got to take a ride on that ship and show us how it runs
Gemma - you lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky person... what an amazing experience! This is a unique boat, what a gem! I am green with envy.
It was such an amazing experience, I am very lucky to be able to do this !
Gemma looks like your having a great trip to the US and thanks for making us jealous.
Back in the 1960s I drove some old steam cranes that had been converted to electric power, they ran on train tracks and were used to unload delivery's of concrete tunnel lining segments for a new tube line in London. There were lots of levers to engages to change motions and when hoisting from the pit bottom at full speed the gears would sing.
Stay safe and thanks for that.
I am a very lucky girl! Poor Simon stuck doing all the housework while off on some amazing adventures!
Excellent video, I am always excited to take a short getaway aboard the Persistence. Steve and Wes and great people and very skilled.
Gemma, glad you had a good time in my part of the world. The last time I was in England was1962, a long time ago, the Bay Area has been my home for 80 years. Marvelous Steam Boat trip you got to go on, that's unique for sure thanks for sharing that really enjoyed it.
Back in the steam engine days the riverboats stopped and logged the shore of the MO and Miss to get the fuel they needed to run those rivers. A very dangerous operation that. Great video Gemma!,
thats the coolest tim machine ive ever seen!!thanks all for keepin them alive!!!
An absolutely beautiful boat I’ll bet that was such a great day out … gorgeous weather too
Firing up the boiler and raising a head of steam Gemma.
If you get the chance visit the Windermere lake district steam boat museum. Beautiful Victorian and Edwardian steam launches in your back yard so to speak.
Theres also the Waverley the last working side wheel maritime paddle steamer working round the UK in the summer months.
If i remember the Waverley was involved in the Dunkirk little ships evacuation.
Don't worry about your fingers, if you lose one you've got 9 more and if you need to count to 10 just take off your shoes! Piloting that tug looked alot of fun too.
@Ship Happens - I love that steamboat. All the running parts. Wonderful mechanics.
It was great to explore and see how it all worked!
Absolutely beautiful! You, this boat, the whole video. Funny it would take a Brit to show me something this cool right here in the US. Looks like 30 hp turns a pretty good clip in that thing.
Best regards from Indiana, USA.
There's nothing like the sound of a steam engine love them all
Lucky girl Gemma but you deserve it for all your industrious efforts everyday! Also envious of your relaxing day on the water.
That's quite the experience you are having Gemma , two fantastic ships you have visited , a steamboat and a Cruiser
outstanding indeed , and you have met with some awesome people as well.
I absolutely love steam power, it's awesome! That was very fun to see, Gem, thanks!
Really enjoyed watching this, what a great bunch of dedicated guys doing what they love. Nice to have had a little share in that
Enjoyed you going through the boat seeing how it works with hands on experience. I did notice when you went out how peaceful it was . It was like we were riding with you and the guys! Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it!
Ah what an experience
Ant NOTHING better than the smell of a wood burning boiler and the smell and sound of a steam engine
What a BEAUTIFUL boat !
Those guys are soo lucky to have her x
I did some voluntary work at the steam pumping station here in Cambridge ( fred dibnah did some work on the chimney) feeding the boiler and operating some of the machinery fantastic experience
What is it with American and the scenery OMG !! and that millpond lake ...
Jemma I'm SO jealous x
It’s like you’re on that old black and white Mikey mouse cartoon!! I’m glad you’re having such fun adventures here in the US Gemma 💕💕
I have turned green all over Gemma. Lifetime memories and a foretaste of Sarinda on the high seas.
I am a very lucky girl! Who would of thought buying a broken boat off ebay would lead to me being on a steam boat in America 12 months later!!!
Truly beautiful steam launch and a credit to her owners. I'd love to see a five-chime railroad whistle on that funnel tho!
Gemma, I helped build “SY Persistence” in South Lake Tahoe years ago. I helped Steve. Steve converted it from a logging boat. I had days wherever all you could see of me or were my baby blues and a trickle of green under my nose from busting paint and corrosion before we applied epoxy and converted rust.
You did a great job, its a beautiful boat and a credit to all that worked on her x
@@ShipHappensUK I’m so proud of you and your husband and your daughter. Your building memories with her. I have a deep appreciation for what you are doing. I worked for Steve for six months. He is a tremendous man. He has a heart of gold and a hard worker.
Sir, you and all involved did a wonderful job, she is a gem of a steam launch.
Hello Sporty. That was so good that I'm going to watch it again. What a great day you must have had too. I do love steam engines and, as someone said its all about finding that sweet spot. You did great, firing up and tending to the lubrication of the moving parts Many thanks and take care
Thank you so much for sharing this incredible day.
The old steam engine what else to say she sounds GREAT! Marty Australia
Nice trip Gemma, great new video episode too. You must have acquired some new inspiration! Best regards to you all from Holland; I’m using part of our holiday time gaining in on the older episodes, starting at the very first. It’s getting time for some better weather now..
What a wonderful, hypnotic sound! Super video!
Really interesting video Gemma.
A boatswain's mate aboard our Guided missile cruiser in 1971 once told me that in their job, that " if it moves..we grease it...if it doesn't move..we paint it !!
Amazing that was. I love steam boats and how they work and run. Love steam Trains too. I bet you didnt wast to come back to UK did you. What a chance of a lifetime you experienced Gemma.
Steam is defernatly the way forward ? wood and water. Well done Gemma, Simon would have loved that.
Super interesting video Gemma !!!
A great discovery that you made us live. Thank you very much have a good week.
love these old traditional steam boats nice to see it restored, your one lucky gal Gemma. I'm from Ontario Canada. I wonder where exactly she was built ? Ontario is a huge Province, its the fourth largest province in Canada. That thing is so cool, good job Gemma good thing you still got your fingers. lol Well every little bit of experience on a boat will help give you a bit of experience to help with your confidence to help you prepare you for one day being a captain yourself Gemma.
Funny old place, you tube, but like cream, friendly positivity rises to the top! Thank you for being proof of this!
Up the coast in Vancouver BC, the steam tug "Master" was completely restored back in the 1980s and still runs regularly. The weather is usually pretty good up here too! Maybe an idea for a future trip?
I really enjoyed this episode, very nice.
That's such a cool old girl. Looks like you are officially an "oiler" lol. Love the steam whistle. It sounds great with the steam blowing through. I own a whistle that came off of the S.S. Master which these guys from the Perspective may have heard of. It is a large steam tug based in Vancouver Canada that has a long history on the west coast. My dad and his second wife belonged to the society that maintained her and they were married on board the Master. The society gave them the whistle as a wedding present and thank you gift for the work they did on the restoration of the vessel. I have the whistle mounted in my shop and plumbed to my air compressor but it doesn't sound near as good as steam does.
P.s. Gemma do a quick RUclips search for "S.S. Master". There are a few videos of this steam tug. She's a beautiful old girl. Worth a look.
Thanks for taking on the cruise. The cleaning of the tubes was fascinating ! So there you are, at the bow of the boat, looking for Leonardo DiCaprio!?
Can’t stop the girl with a paint brush in her hand, straight into the engine, greasing up the shafts.
Never one for sitting and doing nothing am I!!!
@@ShipHappensUK We noticed that, Gemma!!!!
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
That is fascinating i love the old steam stuff
That looks like proper fun! Awsome video! 😁
Love steam boats Ty for the great video ALOHA
Nice job Gem, I'd hi 5 ya but my arms not long enough. But,those blokes kinda got you workin in the engine room for your ride on a steamer which is pretty kool. Thanks m8, looking forward to the nextie, you and yours stay safe and well.
Love the old steam
Very cool what fun reminds me of the African queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katheryn Hepburn
Super super superb
Maintenance, love it..
You still have eight fingers, two thumbs, and no burns - or paint on your clothes!
Gorgeous machine.
I’m sure Simon choked on his coffee when you said might get a steam boat next. Lol
Thanks for sharing, great video`s.
Man, steam engines are fascinating pieces of machinery.
Gemma ! your are inspiring I would love to work a steam engine.on the ohio river!
Awesome adventure. The sound quality was a bit muffled when you were filming and asking questions, they sounded allright but you didn't. Can't wait until Sarinda is at sea.
Neat little boat - reminds me of the Hercules docked in SF.
There's a video of the Steam Tug Hercules running somewhere on the RUclips
One lucky lady
I sure am! Very privileged to have these amazing opportunities x
Gemma no paras chiquilla!!!!!!!!!
good vid on your trip you had keep up the vids
thanks for teaching me somthing!!!
Eat your heart out, Simon. Gemma got a turn or two at the helm and another as an oiler and as a part of the ‘black gang’.
I'm Just pleased I didn't crash or break anything!
This just reminded me of the steam ship Turbinia the fastest steam ship in the world.in 1897 Its on show at the newcastle discovery museum. So not all of them are just chugging along it did 34.5 kn (63.9 km/h; 39.7 mph) Great Video 2x👍
And shocked the utter crap out of HRH Queen Victoria. And, I would imagine representatives of foreign powers who were observing the regatta she split down the middle at three times the speed of anything else afloat.
@@marvindebot3264 You can almost see it passing like steam rocket past the Navy ships.👍
The one time when “thank you for letting me oil your engine” isn’t a sexual metaphor.
🤣🤣🤣
So envious Gem. I love steam engines, they have personality. Btw, did anyone have trouble with the accent?
My maternal Granddad and Grandmother were from Manchester, so no trouble with the accent... Other than my father (Steve) being a bit hard of hearing.
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
Gemma: you should look up the Daniel Adamson, the Manchester Ship Canal steam tug/tender that's preserved close to you.
Love the Danny, one of our helpers also works on the Danny x
You picked a good week to go to the US.
Reminds me of The African Queen you know what I mean Shweet heart 👍don’t know how many people will get this reference 🤔
Brilliant video must have been fun!
Have you heard of the weston flyer foundation
youtube channel well worth checking out
keep up the good work!
Steamboat Gemma, Watch out Mickey!
If only I could whistle!!
Isnt the Windamere one the last and oldest steam boat.. Go see it Gemma with your family and kids. Well worth a visit.
As Fred Dibnah said.If you could bottle the smell you would be a millionaire.
Bonito trozo de historia.
Gemma that engine and it's open action of pistons and valves and your ponytail 🤢🤢🤢
Gemma what sort of speeds was that boat capable of?
This video is blooming brilliant 👍👍👍 poor Mark twiddling his thumbs at home🙃🙃
A minute of silent to our modern inventor's of a diesel engines, this isn't easy to operate by a single pilot at all.
Was that in Stockton and on the Delta? That steam engine kinda looks alive doesn’t it? What a beautiful machine and vessel!
Yes we keep Persistance moored in the California Delta. We steamed to Paradise Point Marina and back that day. Steam engines are very much alive and all have personalities of their own. Thank you for your kind compliments.
12/05/2022 Hello Ship. I am glad you are allowed to travel. I assume that the boat allowed you to enjoy this working trip. Welcome to the usa 9 months ago. How did you trust simon not to paint in your boat while you are on vacation? Don usa
:)
Watching this now..... Where in America are you?
Stockton, California x
I didn’t see a condenser anywhere. Does she exhaust to atmosphere?
She has a keel condenser under the boat. 10, 1' tubes in direct contact with the water.
Keith is quite correct. Ten 1" diameter copper tubes, ten feet long. The large pump on the back of the engine then pumps the condensate (condensed steam= Water) into the hotwell which is the white tank to the port side, behind the engine. In the hotwell the water is filtered and then fed to the two ram pumps on either side of that large pump. The two ram pumps pump it back into the boiler via a feedwater heater inside the boiler casing, above the generator tubes. This type of feedwater heater is known as a 'economizer'... Extracting waste heat in the flue gasses to increase the economy of the steam plant.
Gemma! Wearing jewelry while working around machinery is a bad idea!
Come home we miss you!
Don't worry I'm back on Sarinda on our next episode tomorrow! X
What a beautiful little steamboat !! Makes me think of that cute little cartoon you see in Disney films… with Steamboat Willy Mickey whistling his little tune at the wheel …so really cute xx. ruclips.net/video/L6CZW4rRGfY/видео.html
If only I could whistle!
@@ShipHappensUK hahah I must learn that tune… I love to tickle my little granddaughters when we watch a movie and that little clip comes on … makes us all giggle lol xx
Hi gang! Howzit going??
Are you and Simon separated?
Of course not! But someone has to stay home and take the kids to school!
Gemma, tie that hair up, PLEASE! Have you any idea of what would happen, if your hair got tangled in that thing? Sort yourself out, before there’s a tragedy, PLEASE!!!!
As you can tell by the length of my hair and my many years of having a full head of hair that I know how to look after it, I'm not stupid!
Gemma, no one is saying you are stupid. Accidents happen, often regardless of how careful you are. Danger never takes a day off and machinery never says sorry.
No one wants to see anyone get hurt.
@@m1cxf I was fully aware of my hair, that's why I held it when I was near the engine xxx
I can assure you, Gemma was quite mindful of keeping her hair under control and away from the moving bits when she was in the engine room with me.
@@ShipHappensUK, never suggested you were. Fair enough, I’ll keep my 🤞.
