#AD Visit ABC Leisure at www.abclg.com or call 0330 333 0590 for everything to do with canal boats. This video profiles the incredible Edwin Fasham and his two custom-built canal boats, both of them unlike anything I've ever seen before and mostly hand-built by him in his back garden! If you have enjoyed the video, a tip can be left via www.ko-fi.com/davidjohns or www.patreon.com/CruisingTheCut
I think we can all agree Mr. Fasham has to be one of the coolest narrow boaters you’ve ever interviewed David! Wow! This beauty reminds me of a genre/theme known as “steam punk.” At any rate this boat is by far one of the best you’ve ever interviewd!! What an amazing concept! One of my fav videos
A strong contender would have to be Dorothy Parker’s parrot Onan - named so because he spilled his seed upon the ground. I’ve always wanted a dog called Helix.
Thank you for introducing us to Mr. Fasham and his narrow boat, Ferrous. He looks like a mad scientist and I mean that in a very respectful way. His narrow boat is truly a work of art by a true genius.
I watched this with a broad smile on my face throughout. Edwin is obviously one of those 'mad inventors' who's mind works on a different plane to the rest of us. Truly a unique & fascinating individual. Many thanks for sharing David 👍
That’s the eccentricity of British people. Doing exactly what they want and design and build some awesome things, no CAD or computerised design tools required, just good old engineering skills and a lot of effort. Brilliant
That . . . is awesome! Not only does he build a boat that's mental, he builds a dinghy for it. Recycling, reusing, creating unique solutions for problems most would just buy something at the local hardware store? One of a kind boat, one of a kind man.
"Utterly bonkers and yet Glorious" describes both boat builds perfectly. My only complaint about this video is that I thought it to short, I am so looking forward to your next vlog covering cruising with these unique craft. Another great video, I am always impressed with the way you cover different and unusual aspects of cruising the cut. Hats off to you.
Jaw dropping genius. The tunnel light alone was worth the price of admission. This was a perfect example of what a good storyteller can do with a really good story. Thanks so much.
A counter-weighted foot throttle because a spring is to complicated!! What a sweet ride. Congrats to him. Good thing he wasn't into aerospace or there would have been a Shuttle in his backyard. Or the original ISS.
Like a W. Heath Robinson illustration brought to life. How amazing is this. I’m so glad that you documented this gentleman and his incredible boats. The control panels, that foot pedal as well as all of the lights - they are just brilliant. I love this. Thanks for sharing your visit, much appreciated. 🙂🐿🌈❤️
Of course the engine is in the kitchen! Where else would you put it ? Next you will tell me that the livingroom is not the best place to rebuild motorbike engines... What a fantastic vessel 😍 The world needs more people like Mr Fasham !!!!
The great British eccentric ! Barking!!! I must say that your videos are all made superbly well and I do appreciate the work you put into them. They are top level. Thank you.
Speaking as a professional armour-maker and fellow sufferer of O.C.R.D (Obsessive Compulsive Rivet Disorder). This is officially the ONLY barge I have ever fallen in love with! This man is a lunatic, which I believe I am allowed to say as it sounds like we are from the same place! Total respect and BRAVO! Best wishes from me and all the mice in the workshop here in a French forest. 👍⚒️🇬🇧
This has got to be one of the most fascinating, madcap boats i have ever seen. What an amazing acomplishment, Mr. Fusion has achieved here. My wife used to say "There is no such word as can't". These projects are absolute proof of this. More in this vein please.
My wife and i enjoyed this video. We actually enjoy watching all of your videos . We wanted to leave a comment because we think it helps to promote your channel.
I used to work at Gardners in the 70/80's.....That Gardner engine will last forever. They might not have been made for speed but their pulling power was phenomenal.
Steampunk lives on a canal boat! What a wonderful demonstration of one man's ingenuity. That tunnel light just lifting up on its scissor jack just left me laughing, why not lift it up like that? But wait, where is the screw thread to make it lift? Maybe I didn't see that bit. Of course the chimney drops by a motor operating hinge, doesn't everybody's? What an awesome motor and so clean. Quite obviously this is all a work of love and passion from one of Martha's Sons. The Rivets 500 is a stunning little craft and the side benefit of it being able to "tug" a full-sized canal boat is just so impressive. Thank you, David, for bringing us these fun creations of Edwin, I certainly want to see more of his engineering marvels.
Whenever you show a video like this, it always makes me feel very...I don't know, inadequate. What an achievement to have dedicated your life to producing something this magnificent. And here we all are sitting home watching RUclips videos! (But this was a very good video. Thanks, David).
This is one of the most gloriously English things I've ever seen; proper eccentric man-in-a-garden-shed stuff, right on par with that bloke who buildt a car around a Rolls Royce Merlin aero engine... Absolutely ruddy brilliant!
I'd give this three thumbs up if I could. The world needs more Edwin's. What knowledge I could absorb from an afternoon spent with him. Just brilliant.
Glad to see a relevant sponsor on the video, non of the food delivery, e-learning, VPN-stuff regularly seen on other channels. Such a cute little narrow boat!
What an inspiring bloke, not afraid to do things his unique way. love it, smile factor. Carry on Mr Fasham your truly a man to look up to. Well done David for making a wonderful video that reminds us that we have such gifted characters amongst us.
Brilliant! Great to see we still have skilled and inventive engineers. I grew up in the black country and the area was full of men like this, quietly tinkering away in sheds and out buildings producing clever, well built stuff using whatever they could find. Bostin👍
What a magnificent narrowboat creation. It works, and there are so many individual components. It is wonderful. British invention at its most delightful. Thanks for mentioning the flux capacitor
Just think - he can be sat in the warm of his kitchen, enjoying a brew made on his diesel fired range, and listening to the radio while tweaking and servicing his beautiful, clean, shiny engine - while all us other poor beggars are outside in the weather, face down, bum up cursing the rain running UP our backs and dropping our spanners as our frost bitten fingers refuse to work properly. He's a genius!!
Love the retro world-domination control console. 2:00 - the hacksaw is there to assist with disposal of intruders. Prudent planning for all contingencies. This thing is a work of art! 👍🏻 The little tender dinghy is gorgeous too.
You havent forgotten the art of shooting, scripting & editing little gems of informative, educational and entertaining mini-docos, David. Always a joy to watch... no gimmicks, SFX or jarring audio levels... old school, but not quite as old scool as the subject matter. Afraid to say that if I built a custom boat it could look very similar to Edwins retro masterpiece... always a prototype.... never a production version.
Absolute Masterpiece. Rivets 5000 made me actually laugh when he said she was fabricated from part of a"MIDLAND RED BUS". Brought memories of when I used to catch the 791 from Woodend to Tamworth many years ago. Beautiful engineering.
Men like these make me proud to be english , I wished I had half the skill and talent shown in constructing the boats , it puts a smile on my face. 😁 .
I was around when the Fashams built them they also cast most of the wonderful brass rally plaques reportedly in their back garden, still have meny of them but sold my boat after 25 years N.B. Kestrel.
If you build a steampunk narrowboat, the exposed Gardner motor is the obvious choice.. what else could you use??! The whole thing is brilliant: crazy but brilliant.. In a world where most people go and buy a standard model of whatever, so they all end up looking very similar, to see something unique like Ferrous brightens my day. Then you brought in Rivets as an encore.. Great stuff!
Great to see his nephew's knowledge and enthusiasm for the boat too. I hope there are some junior boaters in the lineage. Maintaining all that quirkyness will benefit from knowledge passed down.
'Isn't that just utterly bonkers - and yet glorious?' But David, my dear, it's glorious *because* it's bonkers! What a wonderful series that could be, by the way - completely unique narrowboats...
The Back to the Future reference was simply amusing... until you showed the radio controller. Are you absolutely sure this mad scientist didn't hide a flux capacitor somewhere in there?! Wonderful build to showcase!
Year's ago legend's pulled swords from stones, nowadays there eccentric inventors with work ethic of a beaver.. You Edwin are something else what a fantastic lovable chap you are well done boss
Both these boats are totally bonkers but at the same time immensely fascinating ! I'm someone with absolutely zero engineering knowledge or practical experience but even I am wholly intrigued by Edwin's creations. 😎
Hello David: nice to hear you again! What an interesting story about Rivets 5000 and Ferrous, both of which are very unique. Edwin Fasham is indeed very talented, skillful and interesting to know. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! He's a classic British clever bloke! A genius engineer and oh what fun! Thankyou for sharing this blog as he really is a Patriarch of do-it-yourself invention. :)

I think, apart from the design of the console, this has got to be a T.A.R.D.I.S.
I think we can all agree Mr. Fasham
has to be one of the coolest narrow boaters you’ve ever interviewed David! Wow! This beauty reminds me of a genre/theme known as “steam punk.” At any rate this boat is by far one of the best you’ve ever interviewd!! What an amazing concept! One of my fav videos
“Rivets 5000” is, to me, the greatest name ever given to anything on earth, inanimate or otherwise.
Reminds me of French bumper sticker on the "cinq (5) sans (without) turbo". The 500 cc bubble car by Fiat
.😅
@@eugenio1542 Or the 20,000 rivets flying in loose formation moniker given to the, (I think), Avro Shackleton AEW aircraft of yesteryear.
He could have called it "Boaty McBoatface"
Rivets 5000 sounds like a name Wallace and Gromit would call it. It looks like something they would build too. I love UK culture.
A strong contender would have to be Dorothy Parker’s parrot Onan - named so because he spilled his seed upon the ground. I’ve always wanted a dog called Helix.

He's such an interesting chap and yes, a wonderful eccentric 😀
Edwin has been a well loved part of the Midlands waterways scene for about 60 years and it's great to see Daniel taking on the baton from him.
That is hands down, shut the books, and slam the front door the COOLEST narrowboat I've ever seen, what a spectacular creation!
If Wallace and Grommit built a boat. Love it. What a great bloke Edwin is.
😂
Geez I can't add anything further, all the previous comments have nailed down how great this guy is
That’s the eccentricity of British people. Doing exactly what they want and design and build some awesome things, no CAD or computerised design tools required, just good old engineering skills and a lot of effort. Brilliant
too many regulations over here, otherwise it would not only be the British doing such things.
That . . . is awesome! Not only does he build a boat that's mental, he builds a dinghy for it. Recycling, reusing, creating unique solutions for problems most would just buy something at the local hardware store? One of a kind boat, one of a kind man.

Nothing like using a hacksaw to cut wood over your kitchen sink. I love it!
We have so many great but hidden and eccentric engineers in the UK, they are one of the elements that put the great in Great Britain
Edwin is a true British eccentric, bet he has a fantastic shed.
The old chap seems like a great person to spend time with.
Wow, what a brilliant engineer. 10/10
Mr. Edwin Fasham, you are absolutely brilliant. If there is a canal boat hall of fame, you should be in it. You are an absolute treasure.
Marvellous old Black Country bloke.
Like a W. Heath Robinson illustration brought to life.

Edwin is what Britain was built on.He is a great inventor and engineer.

Can’t is an acronym for Certainly Are Not Trying
I can’t help thinking Edwin is a great engineer and has pored his creativity into his boat. I hope boat builders pick up a few tips from him
Fantastic. An amazing man and nephew too. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for letting us meet them and their inventions.
Its people like Edwin who created the industrial revolution. Brilliant inventive engineering.
My wife and i enjoyed this video. We actually enjoy watching all of your videos . We wanted to leave a comment because we think it helps to promote your channel.
that man is a genius. what an awesome human.
Give a Brit a garden shed, a couple of old tractors for parts and an endless supply of tea and you'll be amazed at what results. Great stuff.
😂 absolutely 👍
As usual, thanks for recording this man's brilliance and his history, and thanks for sharing with us!!! Edwin is awesome!!!!
this gentelman and family are why steampunk was invented..brilliant this video is possible one of the best you have done ..
That was so interesting and they really seem to be enjoying themselves. Edwin is obviously a genius and I am glad you captured him for posterity.
It is not often I am speechless... but this is just so damn... amazing. Just... amazing
I used to work at Gardners in the 70/80's.....That Gardner engine will last forever. They might not have been made for speed but their pulling power was phenomenal.
What a charming story about some charming people and their exotic builds! Keep them coming! So British!
Don't think I'm capable of liking any of these more than the fuel boat one, but damn this is close! Just great work David, thank you!
Steampunk lives on a canal boat! What a wonderful demonstration of one man's ingenuity. That tunnel light just lifting up on its scissor jack just left me laughing, why not lift it up like that? Ferrous is my new favorite boat in the world!
Congratulations on finding such a gloriously bonkers boat. The best of British eccentricity. 👍
I love the quirkiness of this whole adventure. No TV's or other boring muck.. haha. Keep 'em coming sunshine!!! (Weather looks normal...)
What an absolute gem of a vlog! He's a genius (puts me in mind of Wallace) & the nephew seems to be following in his uncles footsteps!
Brilliant! Great to see we still have skilled and inventive engineers. I grew up in the black country and the area was full of men like this, quietly tinkering away in sheds and out buildings producing clever, well built stuff using whatever they could find. Bostin👍
Look up some of the Hillyard motorcycle videos. The guy is flat out amazing.
Fantastic story, I love this kind of content. Well done David. Mr. Fasham is a true craftsman.
What a magnificent narrowboat creation. It works, and there are so many individual components. It is wonderful. British invention at its most delightful. Thanks for mentioning the flux capacitor
What an absolute lovable mad genius is the man Edwin and much props to the nephew for continuing it. Great video, thanks David!
That was one of the most enjoyable, eccentric Cruising the cuts I've seen for a while. Loved it!
That man is a genius thanks.

This is amazing! Thank you for showing us this and Edwin himself is a treat, his passion is amazing
I love it. This is so steampunk.
This video was a gem. Also the subject of the video,a gem.
1.21 gigawatts 😂 ….. aw! David! Only you… brilliant video, great editing, excellent narrative, drenched in your usual hospitable style ….
The absolute best of bonkers Britain!! 😂 These folks are what makes this nation great. Thanks for sharing
Holy Moses, what a vlog and what a fantasticly interesting chap, so talented. Thank you David, as always, for bringing us all these different vlogs.
That boat is about the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen
The accent speaks of great engineering heritage, from somewhere in the Black Country - great stuff!
The good old fluxx capacitor... Thank you for this video! Greetings from northern germany
Mad, completely mad...but what an absolute genius. Well done Dave, what a brilliant find. British eccentricity at its' best!!
Absolutely blooming brilliant episode! What unique vessels, and even more unique owner's. You have sure hit solid gold with this one.
David in Dudley.
The Fred Dibnah of canals. What a fantastic man. 👏
I was around when the Fashams built them they also cast most of the wonderful brass rally plaques reportedly in their back garden, still have meny of them but sold my boat after 25 years N.B. Kestrel.
Another brilliant piece! I'm always amazed at all the history and community of folks who make their way on the canal networks!
Fantastic. The best canal boat I have seen on here.
There is only one comment I could make: BRILLIANT! Greetings from the US! 😍
What a talented engineer 👍
Nay genius probably
If you build a steampunk narrowboat, the exposed Gardner motor is the obvious choice.. what else could you use??!
The whole thing is brilliant: crazy but brilliant.. In a world where most people go and buy a standard model of whatever, so they all end up looking very similar, to see something unique like Ferrous brightens my day.

Old school 👍can’t beat them .
Living legend , you could listen to him all day .
Great video , thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍
Great to see his nephew's knowledge and enthusiasm for the boat too.
I hope there are some junior boaters in the lineage.
Maintaining all that quirkyness will benefit from knowledge passed down.
'Isn't that just utterly bonkers - and yet glorious?' But David, my dear, it's glorious *because* it's bonkers! What a wonderful series that could be, by the way - completely unique narrowboats...

You wanted a small canal boat David! There you go. Excellent, as always!
Brilliant vlog, got to be the best. What a man and what a boat. Genius 😊
Master Fettler & Tinkererer of Epic Magnitude ! Gotta love the guy !
Year's ago legend's pulled swords from stones, nowadays there eccentric inventors with work ethic of a beaver.. You Edwin are something else what a fantastic lovable chap you are well done boss
Oh David, you find the most interesting people. Thanks muchly, Gloria 🐂
Both these boats are totally bonkers but at the same time immensely fascinating ! I'm someone with absolutely zero engineering knowledge or practical experience but even I am wholly intrigued by Edwin's creations. 😎
This bloke is the best, eccentric, clever, down to earth, top bloke, thanks for the video
British characters like this are a dying breed ;( blooming marvellous.
How "steampunk" a canal boat can be, even without any actual steam on it, beside of the kettle?
Love it!
😂👍👍👍
Hello David: nice to hear you again! What an interesting story about Rivets 5000 and Ferrous, both of which are very unique. Edwin Fasham is indeed very talented, skillful and interesting to know. Thank you for sharing.
God i would love to sit down and chat with Edwin about the things he has made. Amazing
lovely - more please David - we miss your canal boat vlogs, but love all you do
Clever bloke and an awesome build.
What a wonderfully inventive man! Absolutely fascinating vlog!
Unrelenting creativity at its best. Thank you for sharing David. Have a great weekend.
Wow! He's a classic British clever bloke! A genius engineer and oh what fun! Thankyou for sharing this blog as he really is a Patriarch of do-it-yourself invention. :)
