From my understanding the director messed up the movie entirely with CGI and other VFX. There was about 70 VFX shots in the original cut but the theatrical had over 400. All it did was erase the practical effects and storytelling suffered because of it. The movie doesn't get enough credit for paving the way for other comic book movies.
