You asked about mirroring accents. Well...I do it all the time. I work at an airport on the wheelchair service, which means, I spend more time than usual speaking english with people from the most different places allover the world. It's natural, anyway, I try to control it, so no one feels mocked (which is hard), it's amazing how accents can stick on someone😂
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish actually Monica is mocking of her. Because Amanda is not British, she's from the USA. And she has a fake British accent. That's the funny think about all those scenes.
Was exhausted last night when I came back home from a gig. When I was about to fall asleep, I remembered it was friday ( TGIF it's eat sleep dreamers' Day 😉) and couldn't help watching this. Lovely and super usefull as always. Many thanks to you Tom for the time and energy you always put in your amazing videos. I'm absolutely in awe. 😘 from France

Remember that this is a character from America who is adopting an RP accent. One would expect it to be exaggerated in certain places and completely off in other places. So you saying that it’s not that is actually a thumbs up to the character.
I’m in northeast US and grew up using the term pop by, pop over, to someone’s house, more often nowadays stop by or drop by with the same meaning. We also would say I’m in your area, as well as in your neck of the woods or ‘hood/neighborhood.
Lately I just started to learn the British accent (RP), my teacher said that my accent is "neutral" but obviously shows that I don't come from an English speaking country. Good job on your video. New subscriber here :)
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish I am having a bit of problem with "al" such as "almost", "although". I can say "at all" with a good British accent (or at least something similar) but "al" in the beginning of the word is completely different :D
My aunt and I took a Warner Brothers Studio Tour the week of April 17,2023, and the fountain and couch are still there! The couch is not comfortable.A great tour, nonetheless.
Hi there, just watched this video and found it hilarious and your explanation "spot on". I teach English in France, I'm American, and I'm always assuming a British accent to show my students the difference. I'm going to share this with all my students, for fun and for a good lesson! Thanks.
I’m in the southern US and we use area more often than neighborhood. I think neighborhood is a more northern US thing, such as New York where FRIENDS was set.
To 'Ghost' someone is what's also said in America. The same for 'in the area' 'in the neighbourhood' is also used. There's a lot of phrases that used in the UK, that's also used in the US. People don't realise this until you actually live in America.
This is very very excellent vid n very useful to learn.I really enjoy this vid lesson.Thks so much Tom, I really appreciated to upload this vid n yr hard work. Many greetings from Indonesia
Tom, great video! Fun fact...we sometimes use "a-tall" for "at all" here in the deep South in the U.S. With our wonderful southern drawl it sounds like "uh-TAWL." 😁 Keep up the great work! I enjoy your videos!
i'm american but i lived in the uk for 2 1/2 years in dealing with american ex-pats i noticed american females are far more likely to start picking up aspects of british accents whereas males are far more likely to stick to their original accent. not sure why that is except i think females, in general, are far more concerned with "fitting in" whereas males, in general, have a much greater tendency towards individualism.
I'm from Kosovo and here we learn English with American accent, but for some reason I find British accent adorable, the way it sounds is fantastic. Now I'm trying to speak more British and I think I'm doing well I'm getting used with it.
I love watching Friends with grammar. 😂😻 By the way, you reminds me Daniel Radcliffe a little bit. I don’t know how, but you are like his unreal brother. 😅
I've never watched this sitcom, but I enjoyed watching the fragments you have chosen for today's lesson 😄 It's clear that in this episode the protagonists are trying to imitate, in a fun and playful way, the British accent 😃 Thank you Tom, funny and instructive this video, as always. I love the American sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" (especially I love, love, love the character Sheldon Cooper) but I don't think there are actors with a particular English accent to analyze in a possible video of this series..... what a pity, though.
Rene' Zellweger knocked the Brit accent out of ballpark( as we say here in The States) Jennifer Coolidge's is just (intentionally) a bit off which makes it hilarious , especially since we know that she's actually from The Bronx.. 😅
In today's video, you have nailed it, it has been pleasant and gratifying for the English level that I have, I believe I need lots of these materials to boost my progress, thanks and greetings.
Tom, do you think it is true that Americans speak more closely to the way Brits spoke in the 1700's prior to the industrial revolution? Is it just the rhotic "R"'s that were similar or is there more?
Great video, love this format of learning English with songs and movies! Can you please put in the description the link to your friend's channel, or may be I missed it
I never watched Friends but I found this video interesting. Im American and I can not do any accents other than making my slight southern accent more exaggerated for fun.
Duuno why I've never watched this TV show, even in my native language. But I like the way you explain things and maybe I can learn something from "Friends".
Tom I have no idea where to place your American Accent but I think It is not too bad. Your pronunciation seems right to me, no accounting for other American accents but so far as I can tell for me.
HI Tom! Greetings from Shanghai and happy Chinese New Year to you! I enjoyed this video lesson as always! I particularly like the comparison you made between American English and British English. Also, I absolutely love your British Slang Poster. I am going to tell our marketing colleagues about it and hopefully, they will decide to order some for our language school. But there is quite a few slang I don't understand. Have you taught them in your past video lessons?
Wow, a great tv show and great analysis. I love your work, keep it up, man. I give Monica a zero that is definitely not how we speak. American always think we speak like that LOL. Another thing I love about this video is the difference between American and British English. I never realized then but Amanda is in tv show two broke girls and her character is identical to her character in friends. The same personality as well.
