This episode hit me so hard. When I was a teenager my father had to resuscitate me and this showed me the fear and panic he must have been going through.
I went through a similar thing with my own father where I was put in a tough situation. My father had, without my mothers knowledge, invested their life saving in stock from a company he got a 'tip' on. The company ended up going under and the stock became worthless. Instead of telling his wife about it, he tried to gamble the money back on VLTs, and by the time anyone found out about it, he had driven them into massive debt. She almost left him, but they were in their 60s and my mother had no ability to out on her own. She was enraged at him and threatened him if he ever stepped foot near a VLT again. A couple years later, my mother contacted me worried that my dad was 45 minutes into a 5 minute run to the store for milk, I got curious and drove to the place he used to play the VLTs.. and found his car out front and him at the machines. I confronted him, I got upset and the whole thing spilled out into the parking lot with me screaming at him that I have to tell my mother. Just like Jack's dad, my father looked at me with that sad looking his face and said, "You know, if you tell her she will throw me out..." I'd never hated my father until the moment he put the fault on me 'if I told on him'. To this day, I dont look at my father the same way.
One of the more iconic episodes in Lost, things are getting interesting now, aren't they! Also, I don't think I've said it enough, but your reaction videos are honestly THE absolute best. Love the dialogue afterwards too. Lost + Duo Reacts is just the perfect storm of a thought-provoking show with a couple that is incredibly insightful, funny, and enthusiastic. Thank you guys!!!
Definitely one of my favorite episodes of season 1. Thankfullu Jack is stubborn and wouldnt give up... But that whole scene is hard to watch. Kate crying like that brings tears to my eyes.

21:53 Charlie "death" is such a sad and beautiful scene. Music is so wonderful there. I got a tear in my eye just watching this video now. There was a commercial break when Jack first gives up, so us watching it from tv thought that Charlie really died during the commercial break. So the effect of him dying and the coming back to life was even bigger. 25:21 Haha! That is true. :)
Regarding Jack's dad: it's very difficult to prove impairment after the fact, without evidence collected at the time (breathalyzer/blood test), so criminal charges would be unlikely. However, I would say his medical license and his job would definitely be on the line.

This is COMPLETELY off topic! But I want to share. When you guys were joking about "all grown up". It reminded me of something. Many years back, we were at a community picnic type event. There was a young couple there. They were like 19/20 years old. ANd had a month old baby. They had been struggling in their relationship. ANd just having a hard time of things. My son had went to school with them. There they were, sitting with THEIR BABY! and someone in the conversation was talking about scuba diving. And the daddy says "WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SCUBA DIVER". Think about that! YOU HAVE A BABY! You dont get more GROWN UP than that! ANd my son, without skipping a beat, said something to him about it. And even added, "the only thing worse would have been if you said you wanted to be a super hero!" lol I felt bad for the kid. But it gave some insight into his mental state. How he saw things. He had no idea, that he WAS GROWN UP! Shortly after this, he got a job, and really TRIED to do what is right. I know this is completely off topic. And has absolutely nothing to do with this video! BUT, maybe someone knows a young couple, who is struggling. and may help give them some insight into what is going on in the minds of the young people. Maybe!
Peach That would be rude if he said he wanted to be a schoolteacher or chemist, but there really isn’t a “professional scuba diver.” It really made him sound like a child. It was basically the same as saying “I want to be a superhero.” Once you’ve got others to take care of, fluffy dreams go on the back burner. It was a kindness to the child to get that boy off his ass.

But, it seemed to have opened his eyes a little. He really began trying. How you see yourself, plays a huge part in the decisions you make.

He was 20 years old. If he saw himself as an adult, it would have been a completely different statement. It would have been "I want to be a (fill in blank)." Such as a rescue person. A Marine biologist. Scuba instructor. There is no such thing as a "professional scuba diver." The statement he made, revealed a whole lot about his mindset. And if you can't see that, then that reveals something about you. He WAS GROWN UP. And to make matters worse, he was a father! My son pointing it out to him actually opened his eyes. He talked with my son after this, and became better friends. Him being the same age as my son, them going to school together, them growing up together, gave my son a connection with him. By saying "when I grow up" equated to my son also needing to GROW UP. My son knew better. He was a responsible young man. He wasn't a father. But he knew he most certainly didn't need to GROW UP to become something. It was TIME TO WORK ON THAT DREAM. Not just sit and fantasize about it. And that is the difference. If you allow a GROWN PERSON to view themselves as a child, when they ARE NOT A CHILD, you are not helping them. You are doing them no favors. If you don't see yourself as GROWN at 20, then when?

SMH It really revealed a lot about his mindset. Last we heard he is a welder, and making pretty good money. I wonder if he knows he could be an under water welder. Which pays a lot! Another awesome reaction, Lacey & Steve. When I originally watched this episode back in 2004 my theory was the island was actually The Garden of Eden or it was located somewhere in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. What theorizes do you have regarding the island at this point in the show ?
I know he creeps Steve out but I'm with Walt, if I had to be with anybody on that island it would be Locke. When this first aired Locke became my favorite character from episode 4 which was his flashback episode. #teamlocke
When you kidnap someone, he will try to escape. It's natural. To prevent this, you also need to kidnap another person who matters to the first person. Then, we tell him that if he escapes, we will hurt the other. And we tell each other the same thing. Here, Claire is pregnant so she can't really escape. I think Charlie follows them because he didn't want to leave Claire alone. And Ethan uses him as an hostage, more to prevent Jack from following them than to actually need Charlie to control Claire. And, Steve, not even a tear for Charlie ? 😢😆
This was my favourite show as a teenager. Loving these reactions. Started re-watching the show few days ago. This was one of Jack's best flashback episodes.
I think when Charlie said he didn't see anything that he was talking about his vision of the after life. He seemed to be shaken that he didn't see anything. Remember in a previous episode he was a devout Catholic.
Can I request y'all watch these altogether? LOST requires a lot of connect the dots and recall. You may be able to follow better if you just power through.
Love the show and excited to watch Steve's journey...that said I really wish Lacey would tone down on the hints during the episode. I know it's hard and exciting for Lacey, but watching Steve's reaction is priceless and it would be a lot more rewarding for him to figure things out on his own.
I don't understand... lacey seems like really surprised or doesn't know anything or where it's going... Did she really forget everything? Lost is quite an unforgettable show so i dont get it. Apparently they tell the story of each character through FlashBacks, but at a certain point, it is understood that they are not actually Flashbacks, the island is a common point between different Parallel Universes or Alternative Realities, which apparently are Flashbacks, they are alternative realities that occur at the same time as the events we see, but they occur in different parallel realities. It is the true miracle of the Island. "constants and variables"
