Really enjoyed the video. The birds in the background give it an even more relaxing atmosphere. Would have loved a final close up shot of the carving. Maybe even oiled or smth to see the detailed work better.
Lately I've become tired of my style, and I am starting to build pieces that would look good with this type of carving. I pretty much fell in love with these patterns, and went and bought a bunch of Pfeil gouges. I've always thought I would be a terrible carver, but I hoped that my skill with inlay would translate, and I'd be able to someday make my own patterns. Tonight was my first attempt, and this my first pattern. Well.....my fears were confirmed. I suck at carving. The v-tool is much harder than it looks. I can't get a consistent line, or consistent depth.
Well, maybe you learn differently than I do, or most woodworkers I know - but you declare "tonight was my first attempt, and this was my first pattern...I suck at carving" - I'd be pretty surprised if you "got it" on your first attempt. The V-tool in particular is difficult. I would say keep on trying, but I'm not sure you have the patience necessary. One session is nowhere near enough time to judge your ability at any craft I would say...just my thoughts.
@@MrFollansbee Thanks for your reply Peter! I agree that one session isn't enough to judge my potential. I think I was just poking fun at myself. For some reason I find carving intimidating. I should have mentioned that I enjoy every second of it. The patterns are beautiful, and the techniques are really fun. Patience won't be a problem, and I've already noticed improvement from my first attempt. I'm hooked.
Hi there I have a quick question are all chisel set's double beveled? I just got this item and so far i like it but I don't if I can use both sides, as a small test I use a flat chisel and its seems to work on both sides, I hope i'm right, any help is much appreciated please and thank you. This is the set I have, and that for the sharping stone it comes with am I supposed to wet it then use it? Or can I use it dry as well? www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0824J95T8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm very new at this so I also don't how to use some of the knives/chisels is there a video you have or can you recommend some videos for me to watch please, I really want to learn how to carving out a simple face form a photo I hope you can help me out here please and thank you.
It amazes me how good you are at not only the work, but explaining the work.
Excellent instruction, Peter! Thank you for adding this wonderful addendum.
Another nice video Peter. Great editing Daniel!

@@SawyerQuinn Ahh, that's the best news. Keep at it & you'll break through & then the real fun begins. No flat surface is safe at that point!
I wish it was as easier to see the layout.
