I'd be keen on examining some of the research they have that's lead them to their hypothesis on the purposes of these bottles. From personal generational knowledge, those are often made for protection from something or someone. Always loaded with sharps of various sorts and ideally the menstrual blood of the individual to be protected (the spell literally calls for bleeding into the jar under a certain lunar phase, gross) for maximum strength but other bodily fluids can be substituted but at cost of strength of effectiveness. Once completed the bottle is to be buried in the vicinity of the one being protected. If there are a number of bottles found in a region you'll probably find old evidence of a coven in the area or a solitary practioner acting as the local healer. Those found here and there with no concentration of sites suggests a solitary practioner that remained covert.

I'm surprised there aren't more bottles with bits of the bible in them. I can see the logic in the mindset of the cunning man/woman deciding it should be added. It could be seen as using the word of god for defense. Particular verses being cut up could be due to the correlation between that verse and a type of bewitchment.
This is a fair point but I think this is a modern idea - we may be able to get a spare bible at any dollar store, but we have to remember we’re talking about the 17th century. Although the printing press had been invented, printed books were still very expensive and most rural people (such as in the areas where these bottles were found) would have been illiterate. So there are several reasons they may not have had a bible of their own in the house, and if they did it’s very unlikely that they would have considered tearing something valuable and sacred into pieces. That’s if they were even able to read which passages would have been relevant.
Regarding the bending or destruction of items, an animistic perspective might provide a theory to help us understand why this was practiced. In an animistic perspective everything has a spirit, even inanimate objects were thought to be alive so to speak. Breaking, destroying or otherwise killing it was to send its' spirit to the spirit world. Where I am from, the First Nations peoples had a burial practice of breaking items such as bows, arrows, pottery etc. and placing them in the grave with the deceased. This served two functions, but primarily it was to release the spirit of the item so that it might travel to the spirit world with the person to the "the land of the dead" to be used the same as it would have been in the world of the living. I find it very frustrating the inability of archeologists (and other scientific disciplines) to broaden their understanding of material culture beyond the material they directly deal with. The deeper understanding of material culture is oft found within and associated with the songs, stories, folklore, and heaven forbid (pun intended) the religious/ritual and spiritual practices/beliefs of a culture.
I know - imagine expecting people to enjoy listening to experts about something in their chosen field. You'd almost think that not every person is as staggeringly shallow as you are.
@@jonnylumberjack6223 I lament you missed my point. I'm most happy to listen to an expert convey information. On the other hand, it's a terrible death to be talked to death. You never know what hazards might be in old sealed containers. There’s an imperial tomb in China that archaeologists still won’t open bc records suggest it contains a moat of liquid Mercury, and the pent up fumes could cause respiratory or neurological harm or even death. If you were listening, you noticed they said these bottles sometimes contain Mercury. And that’s just one harmful substance.

If you speak with any elders in the tradition, they will advise you that "harm none" is part of the Wiccan Rede. It is not a rule... it's a truth and a warning, advice and wisdom we don't take lightly.
So fascinating, and so fun to see! x
Hey It’s Raksha
already been opened? around the start of 2020 by any chance?
Haha -yes they opened it in a lab in wuhan lol
🤣🤣🤣
If there's sometimes mercury in them, I wish everyone would wear more protection while opening these.
How u know the age of these bottles? Like 17 , 18 , 19 century?
Pottery is traceable by era and matetials. Older glass as well.
As @Camille Dvorak said, pottery can be dated, but also where they are found and what contents they have can be dated as well.
Damn lets get on with it. I'm about to tern it.
Didn't know that witch bottles were to become so popular in those days.
Who’s more expert than a witch at opening witch bottles😂
Love the salt glaze on the bottles.
Fascinating
Truly interesting. It seems that was a form of recycling bottles for some kind of amulets. They are time capsules! Or Vodoo objects :)
I wondered if there were some witches bottles in wiltshire? in some of the villages long ago? i enjoyed this history peek into witches bottles and the belief around it.
Which are witch?
When you don't know how to focus a camera... Tip for the person filming: You want to focus on the face, not on the index drawers!
Focusing on index card cabinets is easier than focusing on people; cabinets don't move.

How would someone have known the cunning folk were not simply witches masquerading as a helpful neighbor?
Now we use baby food jars or Mason jars.
That was fascinating
I come from a long long line of different......almost my whole family are casters....cunning folk...witches of white......when I was 27-28 was at a low point in my life and therefore susceptible , open, and unguarded and something hit my body so hard one night when I was in conversation with my wife.....knocked my essence and my soul completely out of my body.....when my soul and essence returned directly to the vessel of my body I was in a spiritual war with something that called itself 13 and my wife called my mother and this thing inside me and my mother whom I now know as a very powerful force, (we are welsh, Celtic, basque , Scottish descent) had a conversation in a tongue that I didn’t know but understood completely......my mother had my wife get a glass bottle..putt safety pins in it, pee in it , one drop of blood and spit........and she said one word......one word with 13 letters in a language so ancient it sounded almost animal instead of human..........when it was said out loud, the thing that was in me vacated instantly and went into that glass bottle.....which my mom had me cap quickly, i lit a candle and drip’d the wax over the bottle wrapped it with a binding cord 1n2....3n2...5n4...9n4.. 13n2.........15 times take it outside call to the north n south east n West and ask for permission to disturb the earth by the breaking of dawns light and bury that bottle at a certain depth.......some of those “witch jars or bottles” should prolly be left alone for the greater good of good!!!
Warren has any correlation with ed and Lorraine warren!?
They open the bottles at 13:19 because I know that none of us here are actually willing to sit through 13 minutes of non-stop blabbering.
Thank you!
Very interesting 👌
Don't need no damn "witch bottle" to unleash evil.... it's already here.!!!
Nice click bait. It’s so not opening it live.....shame on u
The words You Fucked Up came to mind
I need subtitles good lord

Too much needless palaver! All the information could have been conveyed in 10 minutes.
The experts in this video repeat the same information over and over. I understood what they said the first time! Again, this video ought to have been about 10 minutes long.

What simpletons believe that opening a bottle owned by a 17th century edge lord would unleash hell lol
Depends on which bottle they open?
Meeeeeeee!!!!!! I’m worried
@@chrisdotson1524 which bottle...heh.
@@thepeacefish Mercury is a poison not hell isn't it I'm not saying don't wear PVP opening one up just don't expect to be hell or a geene to pop out of it

What a load of bottles 🍼 we now use jam jars for bits and pieces geeks on steroids
You know what would be funny if that was like the 17th-century version of a junk drawer or jewlery box.
Ah yes that’s smart. Open a witch bottle likely of some religious or magical significance to someone and just dump all the stuff out 🙄
It was deposited as an apotropaic against witchcraft not a curse.
That's what I'm saying. Zero respect.
The bottle was already open.
that's how we learn. how is it not smart to want to examine the contents? how is seeking knowledge not "smart"?
@@raymondhoule6108 who or what are they disrespecting? and why does that person or thing automatically demand respect?
Ok, so, the way a witch bottle is used, is on the same pretense as a voodoo doll?? Interesting....
Isn't that a Bartmann bottle❓
That's exactly what I was thinking! Never heard them called witch bottles. The mudlarks find the faces on the Thames all the time.
I think how it was used is what makes it a witch bottle, could be wrong. Someone found an amazing face in one of Si Finds videos recently :)
If they knew the real truth about a witch bottle
These bottles were opened in Dec. 2019.... ahaha jk!!!
Everyone so far apart, sign o the times. Sign o the times.
Welp time for covid part 2 electric boogaloo
What would be bonkers about a page of scripture? Wouldn't a Cunningman or woman figure scripture would deter a 'witch'? "word of God" vs evil?
Bibles were extraordinarily expensive at this time and most rural people couldn’t read or write.
Is there any evidence of the use of blood as a power substance?
No evidence, just belief. As a modern witch, blood is still used in spells to make more "powerful".
They found urine.
Maybe they exploded because of the power of the 1st spell placed by the witch!
At least you didnt try to drink it.
I suggest that the archeologist that did this knows about spirits and how to clean myself
Well she turned me into a NEWT!.......I got better.
I’m afraid of ignorance. It’s what leads to utter destruction. Anyone care to ponder why the construction of words is called spelling ?
It’s called spelling from the old Norse ‘spjalla’ meaning ‘to tell’
Definitely still practicing, I have multiple witch bottles buried outside right now, but I don’t recommend it because I’ve been possessed from it before
Witches are the victims. They have resorted to using spells because they are powerless. I pity the witch, unless she kills.
