I appreciate this video more than you will ever know. I'm currently writing my first ever song in open D Minor tuning and I feel myself coming out of a prolonged rut. For the chorus it works well for me to go to G minor when, in the past, I would have used G major. Thanks again!
I tried with 3 alternative tuning, and I think this is my favorite by far. Sounds melancholic, magic and it's very easy to understand. The only different thing I did, was changed all 1 step down, I mean, starting in CGC... etc! You have a new subscriber! Thanks for your tips. Regards from México.
My favorite tuning of all time due to the ease of expression without understanding what was going on - thanks for such a nice introduction/overview of minor, major, 2nd variations etc.
A couple of other fun cords are Bb by fretting strings 5 and 2 at the 1st fret and muting the 6th string. Also, A 7 sus 4 with 2nd fret on strings 3 and 4, muting string 6. Great video!
Thank you Tom. I am going to watch this several times this weekend. I originally requested your take on DADFAD - I just got a new guitar that will allow me to put my older one in the open tuning - I also just started my own channel on youtube with an original finger style in open tuning - I called it 7th Heaven Raindrops because it is full of 7 chords, and it rained most of June here. It's all about the journey for us older beginners. I have to learn video editing, my Studio One editing, my pod hd 300 affects/looper so much to know, and so little time. God bless!
Tom I Checked out this- as I am recently trying to learn/play, skip James ‘Hard floor’...The spare guitar now stuck in open D min...this has expanded my availability of sounds in this tuning- as a ‘rest’ from that song and some struggles...but also what a way to practise holding down bar chords (which I find hard usually..and therefore miss out on their use in so many songs..) Also (for me) I got 90% of it all theoretically too ! Very interesting and big Thanks.
Yeah, it was a little shorter. I was trying some new filming techniques and I was getting impatient to see how it looked. haha. I'm so lame. Maybe I'll do another one later.
I tried this tuning last night, using the Fishman onboard tuner on my Martin. It didn’t sound good, even though the tuner said I was playing DADFAD. I’m going to try a different tuner.
Hi Tom, great lesson!! Love the way you teach man! I'm loving this tuning! Question..how do you add a 9th to the chords? Could you share some insight on that for me? Thanks!
@@TomStrahle have you figured out the scale for this? Im still pick’n away. Slow goin. And fingerpicking improv isnt going very well. Cheers man, keep on fingerpickn!
dude.. i thought hes literally roasting me with DADGAD Tuning.. it was soo hard.. then i realized.. why cant i do this.. then i did that and played the whole thing.. after that i came here to do some research
anddd noww i just realized.. instead of doing high C AND Cm chords.. you can tune it down to CGCD#GC.. lemme try that out.. (im soo new to guitar but i know PIANO.. soo its gonna be easy.. need to find some stings thoo haha)

Great overview. Thank you. This tuning is quickly becoming my favorite.

Gonna tune it down to D too
Great video!

Easier than Dagdad for sure, you are right, thanks for the new ideas
What about a turn around to resolve to Dm from Am or B?
Great!
Tom thanks, I'll get the 12 wrangled down and try this..I sure wish you were my neighbor... thanks
Thanks so much 10' 10' 10'
It just gets hot every-summer, I guess ...
Hey man, awesome vid!! How can I play Bb chord in this tuning?
One way - Bb - 888988 or x10010
How do i
play a scale in this tuning?
You know what. Maybe I'll do video on that. I did with scales in DADGAD.
@@TomStrahle I'd love to see that!
