    I'm at the beginning and I am SO confused. Resident Evil has gone back and forth emphasizing and deemphasizing suspense horror and action its entire life and Village is a completely valid and logical part of that lifecycle. Speaking about horror more broadly, horror franchises tend to become more action oriented over time in general. Whatever you feel about it, Village's design choices make perfect sense in the context of Resident Evil and it is NOT a departure from the rest of the series.

    • @mandrews6282
      @mandrews6282 3 года назад +14

      Yah I mean Res Evil has gone back and forth before 8, you’re right. Even Evil Within moved more action just by Evil Within 2. Seems like a natural evolution for a lot of the genre. Dead Space moved to action more with each sequel as well with 3 being more action than anything.

    • @Pandsu

      I completely agree. After watching the intro of this critique I just had to come to the comments and see if anyone else felt this way. The series has always had a pretty big Action emphasis, to be honest, even on PS1. The Action-focus has definitely gotten bigger since but I don't understand how this is the one that gave him that impression. How was it not 6, which was a completely action-oriented co-op B-movie type game. How was it not 4 that was the ACTUAL departure that made it completely panicky action-focused with like one or two little spoopy moments. Or 5 which was even less creepy and basically was the same pure action co-op schlock that 6 was, just with more clunky controls. I didn't even feel like this game felt that different from RE7, really.
      I hope the rest of the critique will clue me in a little more but just the intro on its own makes absolutely no sense to me and feels like he either went from some classic Resident Evil straight to this one or just played the Mercenaries mode. I'm sure neither of those things are true but you know what I mean.
      To me, Village (and 7 also) were, if anything, a return to a more horror-y feeling. RE4 spooked me literally once (the first Regenados (that was their name, right?) encounter) and was otherwise just action with a horror-ish theme, RE5 and 6 didn't spook me at all, but RE7 and 8 brought that back a little and managed to give me a few scares here and there, even if neither of them compare to the kind of horror that you would get with a classic Silent Hill game or something, but then again RE never did that for me anyway.

    • @shredjward
      @shredjward 3 года назад +27

      what really got me in the intro was him asserting that the ending is somehow more actiony than any Resident Evil prior. Like, Resident Evil has literally ALWAYS ended with a schlocky, high adrenaline action sequence. Like, Code Veronica probably has the least intense ending of any of the games, and it still has a self destruct sequence and explosions

      To be clear, this started with his cyberpunk review, where all he was doing was making content that fits with mainstream ideas, lacks passion for the fans and development reasonings for the game, and it's just generally uninspired repeats of the same ideas even in his own sentences, he will reiterate the same point multiple times for content, I think it would be better if he took a break and made one critique for something he cares about, instead of just jumping on the newest games all the time, I got into him for his ultimate critique of the Batman games, and after going back to them I realized that a lot of those points are agreeable and a critique should not just be fans circle jerking the game, I'm here for a deep dive hours of content onto a game that I enjoy, not an extended essay of the IGN points that everybody else has already said

    I will say one thing I do adore about the lords is because of their specialized areas, it sort of feels like little homages to different forms of horror. Dimetresque is classic bram stoker-Esqu horror, Donna is psychological and uncanny horror (things that usually aren’t meant to be scary but are scary), Moreau is “the unknown” ocean horror people fear and Cthulhu monster vibe (harder to describe sorry) and Heisenberg is obviously focused on body horror and body modification horror like human centipede or The Iron Man (Tetsuo)..idk just something I love to admire in this take on RE villains

    I finished RE7 in 14 hours and RE8 in 17 hours. And there was hardly a moment I was stuck, but rather; I explored the games and tried to get the most out of it. Sure you can finish in 6 hours if you zip through and skip practically half the game and just speed run towards the end. I enjoyed the review but this obsession and constant harping about “only 6 hours” just makes zero sense unless your goal was just to zip through the entire game in the quickest time possible.

    You're first run was 6 hours? I'm sorry you feel like that wasn't impressive, but that is practically a speed run for a first playthrough. You have to be in a tiny percentage of people to understand a complaint like "it's too short", while rushing to the end.

    • @DontGiveUp_Skeleton
      @DontGiveUp_Skeleton 3 года назад +104

      @@Budd631 I can understand some people play games at different pace and all that. But to report that it's a 6 hour game is completely misleading. If you're talking about the in game timer then you have to remember that it only counts time in play, that excludes the inventory and the shop menu amongst other things (like ALL the cutscenes). And if you would count "game time" in other games including everything than you should consider that in this too.
      I can do a sub 3 hour playthrough knife only, it's not too difficult if you white knuckle dash through the content. It's not the same experience that's for sure. But that's the thing, do you want content or do you want put your head down and get it over with? That's why the critisism doesn't make sense to me. Everything the game is is not included within that mad 6 hour dash, even putting aside Mercenaries and the Challenges.
      So to sum up the game as "$70 for 6 hours", "if you look at that and are repulsed - fair enough". Like come on. I probably sound like the biggest RE fan defending this, but it's not true I'm just a person put off by the quality of his critisism.

    I don't think a lot of being action in RE8 is "new" for Resident Evil. RE7 had to act as a reset for the franchise because RE5 and RE6 were well known for being heavy on action and very light on horror. RE8 and RE7 both have a way better balance of the two.
    Edit: yes, RE4 also had a good balance, as did the classics (especially the OG RE3)
    Ultimately this doesn't feel like the "ultimate" critique because there is so much missing here.

      It was just so tropey with its vampires and werewolves. Yeah the series main monster has always been zombies but at least they were the result of a man made virus. Even though it was kinda the same case in RE8,in reality Capcom really wanted to go into supernatural territory so they created a supernatural virus lol

    • @soulsearcher9620
      @soulsearcher9620 3 года назад +2

      @@grantgarbour Re4 built its atmosphere well, and got you invested in surviving. You had a job to do, a goal. Save Ashley, and escape. The castle has plenty of the horror aspects, because it has the chanting, chains of the Maces, the invisible bugs, The armour that becomes Las plagas headed...
      It surprises you plenty but remains consistent enough that most enemies aren't one and done unless they're bosses.
      The enemy variation and changing locale lended to it, escalation slowly ticking up to build for the saddler fight which isn't underwhelming, since you've gained an entire arsenal up to this point. So you have no trouble winning, unless you got trigger happy and purged more ammo than you picked up, and missed multiple pickups. That itself can be fun as Heck though, limited resources for the end fight. Do or die.

    I don't really agree with the game length argument, to be honest. Six hours for your first playthrough stirkes me as extremely little and not representative at all of most people's first playthroughs. A more realistic estimate would probably be around 10 to 12 hours (in-game time, which equates to about 12 to 14 hours real time).
    I'm not saying Village is a long game, because obviously it's not, but implying that it's exceptionally short is misleading, especially since it's definitely not shorter than RE7 or the 2 and 3 ramakes. On the contrary, it's probably a bit longer than all of them. And like with most Resident Evil games, RE8 has got tons of replay value and even an additional game mode with Merceneries, so I'd say it's defintiely worth its price tag.

    I'd agree with you about the whole main story VS side content critique if this wasn't a resident evil game. It has always been a series about searching for treasures and ammo. It's not so much a 'okay I'm gonna go do some side quests or explore around' but more so a 'shit I need some ammo before I head to the next area' or 'I need food and treasure for the duke to upgrade before the next area so I should look around' it doesn't divert all attention from the main path like most other games. I didn't find everything on my first go (mainly missed the side area before the Wolf Den gauntlet; the arrows actually caused me to miss the alpha werewolf and said side path.) and my runtime was around 8 hours. I was able to get every weapon and upgrade them somewhat. There was even a really good pistol that you missed in your weapon section that's available from the duke once you reach the factory. It's really good in the mercenaries too.

    Literally all of the injuries you receive in this game can be either greatly mitigated or completely negated by just donning one of the 15th century medieval plate armours found in the Castle. You can even get a sword from one of the dungeon zombies and BAM, you are impervious to damage. Unstoppable .
    I wish you could cheese the game in such a fashion.
    They don't show Ethans face ,because if they do, you will realise that Rose much more resembles ''The Duke'' than she does Ethan.... That is why the Duke is so involved, eager to help but won't elaborate on why he does so.
    I don’t care for the Resident Evil franchise but I have to say, ‘’Village’’ is the first game that I regret watching a play through and not playing it myself. (I watched the playthrough because I thought it would be a game that would not appeal to me…but it did.)
    It is not Roses gelatinous mass contained within the flask, she was dismembered... each flask is literally ladled with the part contained within.... ;;HEAD''...ARm, leg, and so on.
    It seems clear that you had a preconception about this game before you even started playing it, hence your rushed, distasteful take on the game.

    This is my favorite RE game aside from the 2 remake and 4. I wouldn’t really call this a straight up action game though. It’s a good mix of classic resident evil mixed with resident evil 7 for the first half of it and then for the 3rd and 4th/last area of the game it’s more action packed yes but it’s still got classic resident evil stuff mixed in even in those parts.
    I’d say this game is resident evil 4 combined with 7 with some of classic resident evil 1 mixed in with some of it. It’s got a lot of horror and backtracking, it’s got a lot classic RE exploration and progression/puzzles mixed in with the action. It’s a good combination of classic and new.

    Well on harder difficulties, you don’t always have to play on normal first and harder doesn’t have to be subsequent playthroughs where you know what you’re doing. You can start on harder if you want more of a challenge. But I would agree that 8 is more accessible at normal difficulty for the average player with more ammo and resources than usual in a ‘survival horror’ and 8 is def an action game with horror elements. Same thing happened to Metro and Evil Within with earlier games being much harder on normal and the later gamea having a very easy or story mode and also being relatively easier even on normal. Which is smart if you want to sell more copies, but players should be aware that if they want more of a challenge to start on a higher difficulty. Love it or hate it, it’s a way to make games more appealing to the largest possible audience.
    What I will say though is some weapons are only available on a New Game Plus and you can get some really fun upgrades as well that take more than one playthrough. I had a blast playing a second go as I still had things to work toward. Although it does make it a lot easier even if you up the difficulty.

    I thought the balance of horror to action was fairly smooth , with the baby sequence being something i know has scarred me for life. At the same time, having been a casual observer of the RE franchise without ever really playing most of them out of an aversion to survival horror, i could definitely feel the ways that capcom tried to open up the franchise to COD and Doom players. They could've done this much worse and really betrayed the series' horror Roots but i thought the house Benevento sequence and the overall tone and design along with the story managed to keep the game grounded and clearly identifiable as an RE game .
    Great game? Def. Great RE game ? Hmm, maybe check out the remakes...

  • @TheTongueTwisler
    @TheTongueTwisler Год назад +1

    To me, what makes the RE games great (and really drags RE6 down, unfortunately) is the 5-10 hour games that are extremely repayable. I played RE8 probably 5 times in a row, back to back, after finishing it the first time. It's just a lot of fun, and going back to unlock new things, or unlimited ammo, is a good time to me. Same happened with RE2R, I played it at least 4 times in a row before finally giving it a break and it's STILL something I'd absolutely go back to do another run of. The expectation of all video games needing 200+ hours of content is draining because, most of the time, the content in there is just boring filler stuff I don't really want to do. Not to mention when a game is 20, 30, 40+ hours for the main story, I get burned out and stop. I think the RE franchise has nailed it perfectly tbh
