Brilliant explanation, Steve! You have condensed the key concepts of dropbox into 7 mins. I'm finally getting what this dropbox thingie is about 😃 You've got the gift of teaching. Thank u
Just discovered you Steve. You're a wizard. I'm a retired teacher and just venturing into (for me) the foreign territory of IPads etc. thank you for sharing your talent in an easy to understand way. Aine Ryan
This was exceptionally helpful! I've been looking at all the existing online backup options, and to know I have complete control of what I want to back up is genius. Thank you for putting this video together! You now have a follower.
great tutorial!! I have never used Dropbox but feel after watching your video one time I can use it with ease... you are excellent at explaining how to use and the benefit of using this software. Thanks again!!
All files within Evernote are stored within the Evernote infrastructure. You can't for example, just go to a file which is stored in Evernote open it and edit it. In dropbox the files are in their native format so you can share them open them, edit them etc. Plus for the sharing of documents and photos dropbox works very well. Evernote does not, you can have a shared notebook in Evernote but it's not the same as just sharing an individual file. They are really complementary products.
Dropbox is ok, but the biggest problem I had with it was the cost. I have 18 employees, and that cost me $2250 a year to support their accounts. My current provider, DriveHQ, offers the same number of accounts for only $100. I'm sure other providers are cheaper too. All I can say is, I switched and I'm glad I did, and I don't ever plan on going back.
hello Steve from France. Your presence via all your tutos is priceless. Infinite thanks and respect. re: dropbox what about consequences of installing-using dropbox? here's one: (I'm using a mac) I used to be able to "store to dsktop" aka "locally" a screenshot (cmd+shift+4 or 3) which is a logical process. Slick dropbox now takes command...it nicks my screenshot and sends it to my account / cloud; and it doesn't ask my opinion. So, as I'm getting the hang of dropbox thanks to your generous tutoring, I am also monitoring the tech incidents. All the best, IGM
ian g marshall Hey Ian, I get a little perturbed by "undocumented features" that just happen as well, many of the cloud services do that sort of thing....
Love your vids-loved your show, thanks for keeping on keeping on! Ok so my question is...if youve got a folder that you upload to dropbox, which then syncs to its own folder on your computer...you now have 3 copies of the same folder? Isnt this a bit of a storage hog if youre duplicating on your own hard drive?
Tanya Kucey I think so Tanya, in fact Dropbox recommends you move folders instead of copying them. tak a quick read of this help file... www.dropbox.com/en/help/152
Thanks for the info on dropbox. Can you tell me how to delete a file so that what I shared with people would be removed? I right clicked on "Delete" and it tells me "Deletion Failed". Has anyone had this problem? We are using dropbox for meeting agendas that would containe financials and would like the file deleted after the meeting.
How do you prevent redundancy of files on dropbox? Seems I've got 3 or 4 of each photo...don't know how I did it, but it obviously is not something I want. Thank you for your help.
Do I have to have the DropBox folder in every PC "laptop, and desktop" ? In portable devices I can access the folder without having a file on them. IPAD, iPhone. thank you.
Really enjoying your videos on dropbox. I recently upgraded to a paid account, and use a macbook air (minimal storage of course). I've found that whenever I create a document or want to save a PDF for example, I am saving direct to dropbox ("save as"). I've found myself never saving to my Documents folder on the hard drive. Is there anything wrong with this process of saving everything direct to Dropbox. There seems to be a continue emphasis of the traditional method of saving items to your hard drive, and having dropbox as the backup tool. I like the available on any device feature for quick access to all my files. Thanks!
I put dropbox on my computer because a friend used it and wanted me to have it so she could share things with me. I never use it and I don't want it on my computer anymore. How do I take it off my computer?
Can I and a collaborator be working on the same document in Dropbox at the same time? I know in the past, we've ended up with "conflicted" copies of the document and we'd like to avoid that in the future. Thanks for your good work!
I have a dropbox icon on my task bar. It opens the files in my computer and does not have an option to launch to the web. I guess the green check on the file means that it already sync to my account. Recently i upgraded to 2TB storage. My C drive has 1 TB capacity. Should I change to have my files in dropbox only and not in my computer? If so, what do I need to do? Thank you.
I've got two computers, which somehow have different dropbox contents (one much bigger than the other). Is there a way to merge them, and have all the docs available on all my computers?
HI, does this mean I must have 2 copies of the same file on my computer like 1) in a folder named something that makes it easy to find and 2) copies paste latest versions in a Dropbox folder? ... or can / should I put only 1 copy of the folder in DropBox and work on them from there with no other copies? Thanks in advance for clarifying.
Am I the only one who found a file named June Playboy (edited) in his Dropbox? Unless June Playbo...edited-2.jpg means something else.... 4:24 7th file
hmmm, I am still confused after reading about dropbox for an hour. I keep hearing that everything in your dropbox folder syncs to all your devices, but how can this work? Let's say I want to keep a backup of my photos for security reason (not for accessing them from other devices). I have a local folder on computer A in my office with 400GB of pics, I have a dropbox pro account with 1 TB of storage, so no problem, I move my pic folder and they sync to dropbox in the cloud, I now have a backup, cool. But now I go to computer B in my studio where I also have dropbox installed (same dropbox account), but I don't want these 400GB of pics sync locally to computer B! I also have a phone that 16GB of storage, it can't sync that amount of pics on my phone. I don't understand the syncing usage model across various devices when these devices might not have the same storage capacity as the original computer.
Thanks for your great explanations for a lot of solutions. Can you explain samsung cloud for us. Specially the part of restore images because I can't find it any where at Samsung cloud restore. Funny they put restore for everything except photos! Maybe they liked my photos: -)
I have a question. After listening to a few of your 'Fantabulously' clear understanding RUclips videos on 'Dropbox, I'd like to know that if I upload a PowerPoint photo album presentation with music, will it upload all as one photo album & will the people I share it with be able to view it as one complete photo album? My problem is that with some other similar programs, the audio file uploads as a completely different folder & can not be viewed as a complete presentation.
+Tannis Power I have not used PowerPoint in a while but I remember that issue, One way may be to upload the presentation and audio file into the DB folder, open it there and make sure the audio link works in that folder.
I deleted a few needed files by mistake before installing Dropbox for the first time to my computer, would i be able to retrieve those deleted files using Dropbox?
Hi. See my problem is I just lately found out that my Dropbox in my Co. Peter had stopped syncing files long time ago. Can u pls help me with this problem?
Hi, thank you for your video! I had a question: can I leave my folders the way that they are set up right now on my computer....or do I need to transfer all the files/folders that I'm interested in having on Dropbox to be moved to the Dropbox folder?
I mainly use dropbox for video and photo storage to open up computer. But then how do copy them back off of dropbox back to your computer to either print, copy to dvd, ect.
this is Mac, I use windows, how do you set the location of the local folder? because I have a C and a D drive, after downloading the app, it put the local folder on the C drive, how do I set it to be on a certain location in the D drive? thanks!
I'm considering establishing a virtual office. We have years of files stored on our server, that we have to maintain by law. Would DropBox Pro be a good solution for us? The whole concept still eludes me a bit. Thanks.
Michael Coyle I think it would be a good starting point. The person you need to start folioing to learn about the best ways to set this up is Brooks Duncan at DocumentSnap
Thank you for your informative video! I purchased the additional storage to upload my photos from my Macbook Air (memory issues). While I appreciate the additional backup security and the ability to share, may I clarify that uploading my photos to Dropbox does take up additional space on my hard drive? I have also uploaded my photos to an external disk drive and I still have them in my Photos App on my Mac, so I don't think I have the hard drive space to also have them on Dropbox. Could that be possible?
.. Hello!, I have a question, If I avail the Drop Box Plan for additional Memory Storage does it mean that I have to pay $99.00 per/year as indicated in your screen below the Pricing? ..
I just got a new hard drive. I installed Dropbox and have my scanner to save automatically to a specific file in my Dropbox...however, when I go to find these files from my phone (android) the files aren't there! Is that because I am not saving the file 'first' to a file on my hard drive?
Patrick Fetzer It should be there, sometimes it takes a while to sync, you should have the files on your drive as well.....is there a reason you don't want them local and in the cloud?
I have documents in my Dropbox and can access my Dropbox documents from my Android Phone, Galaxy Tablet and Windows PC. The only issue I am having is: when I open a document in Dropbox from my Android phone, It opens the document in Polaris Office. I can then edit it on my phone. However, when I go to save the edited document, it saves it to somewhere in my phone--not back to Dropbox. I cannot figure out how to tell it to "save as" to dropbox. I've researched everything I know to do. I tried ES Explorer file manager and still don't know how to accomplish this. Thanks for anyone's help.
What about the encryption malware going around. If it encrypts your computer files, will dropbox store the encrypted files also? That would defeat the idea of a backup at that point no?
David Miller I'm not entirely sure what you mean, you can store encrypted files on dropbox but of course you would require the key to unencrypted in the future
dottotech The new viruses or malware going around call "RansomWare", where it encrypts your entire computer and demands that you give them money in order to get the Key. My question is, if you get infected with that, wouldn't dropbox just store the encrypted files then...so you are still out of luck. The only solution I see is an Offsite, Offline backup. What are your thoughts?
soolan11 I Kind op a ninja tip.....at the end of the shared link is ?dl=0, change the 0 to a 1 and send the link, it forces a download instead of asking,
I am new to Dropbox so this may be obvious to you. If I was sent a link to an already existing file on someone elses Dropbox, and asked to add other files to that folder is that possible? Do I need to create me own folder and share a link or can I just simply add my files to theirs?
When I access and edit a file from my Dropbox using a computer from school the file does not seem to be savings the changes I made. I have saved, closed the file then open it back (at school) and the changes I've made don't appear.. What I am doing wrong?
Hi SteveI have had Dropox for 3 years and a paying customer for 2 years. I am not using it to it's potential, this I know, especially after watching this video which prompted me to ask this silly question, wish I am sure I know the answer to but haven't slept in two days LOL ok...I just have a a very very old desktop which I have not put dropbox on, but my Laptop and phone are synced for photos from my phone to my laptop. My question is I have many many photos on this laptop that I had to copy from desktop as I was afraid it was going to crash (I did this with an external hardrive about 6 years ago) anyhow can I move these photos on my laptop to JUST DROPBOX.COM I don't want them taking up space on my phone or if i get brave and TRY to put it on my still working old desktop which actually ports my router. I hope I made sense, as I have developed some awful stress induced insomnia ugh??
I wanted to use dropbox to store files there, rather than on my hard drive Am I correct in assuming this is not an option, i have to keep a copy on my hard drive can you recommend options to where I can store on line and retrieve them back dropbox was great for seeing doubles of images
Perhaps Google Drive would serve you better, +Nancy Adams, and many people like Copy, there are a few, but I can't recommend them as it sounds like you have a unique issue.
Hey Don, In Google Drive you can share docs without upgrading, for the most part you will be using Google Docs which have collaboration capabilities built in.
I have Bible Studies that I have taught and saved to a file on my iPhone (Android) with Free WavePad. I am having a hard time transferring them from my iPhone to my computer so that I can edit and put them in my Sound Cloud account. I did it one time, but can't get it to do it again. I thought the Drop Box app on my phone would help me with that, but it hasn't. Can you help a brother out on this one? Thank you! gary
+Gary Freeman Hey Gary, I am not sure what the issues are, Apple's lack of open file structure can be a challenge sometimes. I would play with export settings. Sorry I can't be more specific.
I used db for over than 2 years. it was so nice, but lately it started not save pics in my files which I created and used so smoothly. it shows a message "save ur new file" and saving became impossible... please help..!
I'm looking to create a FB page for a book my wife is writing. She wants to be able to upload links to FB so ppl can view files, on drop box, and maybe down load. Does the share feature works the same?
Really very good to get reply so quickly. I will take care of ur comment. In the meantime, i hv started working directly in drop box folder. It is really nice. One worry, opening dropbox.com from dropbox folder does not ask log in credentials. If comp is not password protected, i think it is a problem. Thanks
I don't understand nothing about dropbox can someone please explain me how to use it. I have a lot of pictures and want to save them. I don't have no computer only android phone . I want save pictures easily and that are save but i when i want some pictures back to my phone how can i get them back. Someone please let me know how or have some information.
I want to know if a shared file can be edited and return to the owner? I have shared a folder with a friend he can view it but can't change it. can you help........... Cheers, Don
Hi Don Yes, but I believe you need to have the Premium version to do so. and the file is synced, rather than changed, so you all have the same version at all times.
If you are uploading, and turn off your pc, when you turn your pc back on, does it automatically continue the upload? Or do you have to restart the upload?
Thats nor what i asked, i asked, if you start a upload. Then turn on your pc half way through the upload, when you next turn on your pc, will it continue uploading from the previous point?
Latosha Cooper thank you ma'am but I unshared the folder, not the owner. And the owner says that in there Dropbox it's still shows me "added". I don't know what to do
Brilliant explanation, Steve! You have condensed the key concepts of dropbox into 7 mins. I'm finally getting what this dropbox thingie is about 😃 You've got the gift of teaching. Thank u
Glad it was helpful!
Don't be concerned about the date of this video, its still valid and VERY good. VERY informative in easy to understand examples. Great job,

There are some exceptions when it comes to 'any' file being able to uploaded to Dropbox. It doesn't allow copyrighted files.

HI Steve, Thank you so much for explaining dropbox. It was indeed a great help to me.
Wow, an answer so soon. Thought it would get lost in the cloud. Thanks for the info. Appreciated.
soolan11 No worries, I hope to see you in the Webinar!

Thanks for answering & sharing.
Thank you for the information about Drop Box.
Informative summary of Dropbox, thanks!
just read an article from the BBB about people getting malware using Dropbox. can you comment on the dangers of using Dropbox?
Thanks for this very informative tutorial, Steve. Regards, M.
Wow! Awesome video and very helpful. Thank you so much!
hello Steve from France.
Everything in Dropbox is private until you chose to share it correct? Great video, thank you!
Peruvianguitarplayer You Are correct, at least as private as something stored on someone else's server can be.
Thanks Steve, your Tutorial helped me a lot.

In portable devices I can access the folder without having a file on them. IPAD, iPhone.
thank you.
I believe you have to turn off automatic uploading at this time and manually upload only the videos/clips you want. I could also be wrong.
Your right into business and have some questions about apps
Great info, Steve!! Already using Dropbox, good tips.
you teach really well! Thank you so much for this

Great Steve, but one question: If I want to change the main computer, what should I have to do?.
Thanks. (sorry for my bad English)
Gustavo Adolfo I am not entirely sure what you are referring to, you can customize your Dropbox folder on each machine you use.
Nice one mate, very informative video
Loved the video easy to understand & straight to the point thanks. ^ͺ^
I put dropbox on my computer because a friend used it and wanted me to have it so she could share things with me. I never use it and I don't want it on my computer anymore. How do I take it off my computer?
Thank you. Regarding it always keeping the most current version, are there options to access earlier versions should the need arise?
Can I and a collaborator be working on the same document in Dropbox at the same time? I know in the past, we've ended up with "conflicted" copies of the document and we'd like to avoid that in the future. Thanks for your good work!
I think so
Great video, clear, concise and I learned what Dropbox.com is for!
Is there like a pot luck website out there where everyone drops files in but they can also take out whatever they want when ever they want?
I have no idea, sorry!
I thought Steve's explanation very good start point.
Hello Sir, make video on Box cloud storage please.

As far as I know, you don't need the public folder anymore for sharing files. It works from any location within Dropbox. Am I wrong?
How can I just view your presentation, and not the small window of you and above you an ad?
Answered my questions.. thanks
Thanks for your great explanations for a lot of solutions. Can you explain samsung cloud for us. Specially the part of restore images because I can't find it any where at Samsung cloud restore. Funny they put restore for everything except photos! Maybe they liked my photos: -)

The paid accounts allow version control for up to 30 days so you can retrieve anything you accidentally delete.
Well done. Thanks!

I mainly use dropbox for video and photo storage to open up computer. But then how do copy them back off of dropbox back to your computer to either print, copy to dvd, ect.
Log into your account at Dropbox.com and then download the files you want to work with.

How do i stop Dropbox from uploading videos from my iPhone (because it takes 4ever to upload!)

Patrick Fetzer It should be there, sometimes it takes a while to sync, you should have the files on your drive as well.....is there a reason you don't want them local and in the cloud?
so...If I purchase more storage will I be able to drop my videos in without compressing them?
it depends on how many videos and how long they are, Media In Action for the most part though online storage is not the place for uncompressed video

When I access and edit a file from my Dropbox using a computer from school the file does not seem to be savings the changes I made. I have saved, closed the file then open it back (at school) and the changes I've made don't appear.. What I am doing wrong?
Juan CK I wonder if you are downloading the file and editing a local version.
I wanted to use dropbox to store files there, rather than on my hard drive
Am I correct in assuming this is not an option, i have to keep a copy on my hard drive
can you recommend options to where I can store on line and retrieve them back
dropbox was great for seeing doubles of images
Perhaps Google Drive would serve you better, +Nancy Adams, and many people like Copy, there are a few, but I can't recommend them as it sounds like you have a unique issue.
Hi thank you for reply, what about Google Drive do I need to have to have a premium?
Cheers,
Don
+labeed abdal I have no idea, you will need to contact DB support for this one.
how do you let people edit your files when you share the file or folder with them?
I'm looking to create a FB page for a book my wife is writing. She wants to be able to upload links to FB so ppl can view files, on drop box, and maybe down load. Does the share feature works the same?
Floyd Coley If you publicly share a file yes,
Do you have any 2017 updates on this?
Can we make dropbox folder a default one to save files? If, so. No need to copy/move files to dropbox. It will be there and it will upload to cloud.
Nayan Shah You can do that in your preferences at a system or app level, depending on the app and OS.
Really very good to get reply so quickly. I will take care of ur comment. In the meantime, i hv started working directly in drop box folder. It is really nice.
One worry, opening dropbox.com from dropbox folder does not ask log in credentials.
If comp is not password protected, i think it is a problem. Thanks
I think it is working because you are navigating from your desktop folder so you are sourcing local files
Correct. Thanks.
I don't understand nothing about dropbox can someone please explain me how to use it. I have a lot of pictures and want to save them. I don't have no computer only android phone . I want save pictures easily and that are save but i when i want some pictures back to my phone how can i get them back. Someone please let me know how or have some information.
+Jennifer Garcia That is what these videos are for.
I want to know if a shared file can be edited and return to the owner?
I have shared a folder with a friend he can view it but can't change it.
can you help........... Cheers, Don
Hi Don Yes, but I believe you need to have the Premium version to do so. and the file is synced, rather than changed, so you all have the same version at all times.
why my pc not installing drop box it dose downloading I have folder with drop box name butt I cannot open drop box
Thank you very helpful
Why is it that when I'm exporting a photo onto my phone... it says "exporting" for ages and freezes my phone??
seccikid6 Sorry, but there is really no way for us to know, too many variables, you need to reach out to your phone and computer makers.
If you are uploading, and turn off your pc, when you turn your pc back on, does it automatically continue the upload? Or do you have to restart the upload?
***** Yes it continues to work in the bcakground
Thats nor what i asked, i asked, if you start a upload. Then turn on your pc half way through the upload, when you next turn on your pc, will it continue uploading from the previous point?
How to add yourself back on shared album? :(
Latosha Cooper thank you ma'am but I unshared the folder, not the owner. And the owner says that in there Dropbox it's still shows me "added". I don't know what to do
