Putin was dealt a strong hand and managed to play himself into a weak position. Twenty years ago Russia was on a roll. It's interesting if you plot Russian and Norwegian GDP against oil prices, the plots look almost identical. But Norway managed to parlay that into the second highest Human Development Index in the world, just slighly behind Switzerland. Russia ranks at #56, well below, say, Greece at #33.
Russia squandered the money coming in enriching people with political connections to Putin. It could have used its economic power to transform its cultural connections to places like Ukraine into soft power, instead it chose to meddle in their politics, to bully and intimidate it's neighbors so even the most stubborn neutral of them decided they'd be better off in NATO.
Really the only thing that approaches Russia for stubbornly bad decision making in modern history is Japan heading into WW2.

Bradleys don't have much armour and get knocked out at a rapid rate. They are visible from a long way away being 10 feet or more tall.

It was and is clear that Trump's foreign affairs attention is way off. The man has repeatedly shown little to no appreciation for it and seriously put the US and the world at risk. Just look at his terrible meeting with Kim Jong Un. It only made the latter feel more comfortable to manifest himself even more on the negative level.
The US is not alone, they better keep a decent eye on other countries with a leader that realises it's essence.
respectfully, i wouldn't call 30 Abrams tank a 'huge' amount. The tactical methods in this war/modern warfare are really hampering the influences of main battle tanks
Even the Ukrainians apparently feel that Abrams are too delicate and high-maintenance for what is happening in Ukraine. They need the massive war machine and logistical support of the US forces behind them.

Everything helps. 30 is better then zero. 30 good tanks vs a few thousand (they don`t even HAVE 10 000 tanks derpy) old inferior soviet tanks, with all the other parts of tank warfare, (i.e. bradleys ect) is def a win for Ukraine. remember the Russians are not about Quality. They are all about quantity, Which never equals Real quality. 1 good man, can defeat 10 000 men, if he uses strategy in accordance with the true eternal laws of the living universe we all live in.

In a combat situation a T-72 crew will know the advantages they have and the disadvantages, and they will play according to that. So It wont really matter.
Zelensky needs to stand strong on the complete removal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory previous to 2014 and the establishment of NATO membership to maintain security from thereon.

Apparently, he means secret supplies, that is, much more weapons have been delivered to Ukraine than officially announced, and even this does not help. In a couple of months, 16 Abrams were destroyed, this is half of the "official" supplies, if you consider how many should be repaired, how many are kept in reserve, how many machines are allocated for training, there may be more than a hundred of them, what about the face of the west?

What is the point of these calculations if the war continues in full force? These numbers are taken from thin air for both sides. If the war is unsustainable why it is not over???
Both sides have at least a general if not very accurate idea of each others loses they aren't staring into an abyss with zero data points.

'Unsustainable' means that, eventually, some state or event will no longer be able to continue. Not that it must stop now. The calculations are done in an attempt to estimate when that end point of sustainability might actually be.

The scale of Russian losses will grow. Don’t rely on Russian stats: reported male population is overstated by 5-10%. Labour has trouble with immigration policy.
British defence spending is clearly far too low. 75,000 soldiers with poor recruitment records are nothing more than a token effort. We should be at least doubling the army number along with appropriate equipment. That’s not being considered by the folks who run the country. Hence Labour and previously Conservatives have effectively done nothing.

Russia has lost, that's why Putin wants a peace deal, hes so desperate that he sent potato head Lukashenko to meet Zelensky. The war is unsustainable, he's sacrificing troops for insignificant gains thinking he can hold all of this with a peace deal, what a fool.
Putin has succeeded in uniting NATO, bringing Sweden and Finland into NATO, increasing NATO's BUDGET, isolating Russia and exposing the pathetic weakness of the Russian armed forces. Consider the progress of the Russian army in 2024. During this time, they have captured .13% of Ukraine's territory and it's still being contested. Russia has lost 45,000 (KIA) soldiers in 2024. At this rate of "progress" it will take Russia 384 YEARS to conquer ALL of Ukraine and it will cost an additional 34 MILLION Russian soldiers their LIVES. All things considered, RUSSIA is not WINNING. How long will it be before Putin loses power? The Russian population is 1/2 of the USA population and during the past 2.5 years Russia has lost MORE soldiers in Ukraine, than the USA lost in ALL of its Wars in the last 79 years. That includes, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Iraq 1991, Iraq 2003 to present, Afghanistan 2001 to 2021. Face the facts, the Ukraine invasion is a DISASTER FOR RUSSIA. Ukraine will ultimately win and Putin will lose power. Ukraine is Putin's BLUNDER.

What history are you talking about? WW1? Perhaps? Or try Russo-Japanese War, which led to Russan revolution and the end of the Tsar? Or the Soviet-Afghan War which led, in part, to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991? There are others. So what history are you talking about?
With only roughly 90 million ethnic Russians attrition most definitely has a part to play in this conflict whether it takes 3 years or 6 .. Putin is not as safe as it seems.

Russia is not the Soviet Union, it’s been in terminal demographic collapse since the 80’s even by (undoubtedly heavily massaged) Russian statistics which made this war inevitable and this has just accelerated as a result of the war. This is Russia’s existential crisis, Putin is rolling the dice but the gamble is not paying off thanks to the endemic corruption baked in to his oligarchy.
Strategic Defence Reviews take 18 months. Then there will be a Navy Surface Fleet Review. Then they will cancel $70 billion in Defence projects and promise $50 billion in 10 years. Like Australia
I just hope the strategic review is done intelligently by looking to the future of warfare such as AI drone swarms and anti-drone defence rather back at big cost items like ships and planes.

Whilst I applaud the US aid package, I have to ask why it has taken this long to reach this point. Ukraine needed the ammo, the APV, the tanks and the f-16s two years ago. So many lives have been lost due to indecision of western politicians.

I've been reading headlines stating russian losses are "unsustainable" for 2 years now. It appears these levels of losses are indeed sustainable, and russia is able to coerce people into their war of choice in Ukraine.
