    The Voice was not male. It was done by the actress Mercedes McCambridge. She was an alcoholic who had been on the wagon for many years. She had also given up smoking. She drank whiskey, chain smoked cigarettes, and eat raw eggs, forcing herself to throw up. She also had herself tied to a chair and had a counselor and a priest standing by for hours while she recorded it. SHe went through almost as much as Linda Blair just for the voice, though she didn't have to endure the sub-zero temperatures that Blair did.

Crappy thing is both Mercedes McCambridge and Eileen Dietz didn't get credit for it.

      @@MoreIrrelevantTwaddle No, no. Linda actually did the crucifix scene. It was a box with red paint she stabbed, but she knew what she was doing. Eileen can clearly be seen in the first vomiting scene, yes. Mercedes was credited after complaint, and no, she wasn't an alcoholic or vomited. But other than that, pretty accurate. But Linda did actually do almost everything.

    I had just entered Marine boot camp when this was released in 1973. Cut off from news from the outside for 3 months....I didn't even know the film existed. I missed all the hype & excitement. So when a friend dragged me to a theater to see it in the summer of '74....I went in completely blind. He didn't tell me ANYTHING about it, other than it was 'scary'. Never even heard of the word 'exorcist'. Looking at the poster outside, I thought the man was a doctor. 46 years later.....I'm STILL traumatized.

      19551 1sm I understand you friend (sorry for my English, but I'm using google translate)
      I remember that at Christmas '72 I bought the novel The Exorcist in a department store. After reading it, I was in awe! The following year, 73, the televisions of Spain announced the damage that a film in the United States was causing in the public ... My great surprise was that that film was: The exorcist.
      I remember they released it on September 1, 1973. I didn't go to college that day looking for tickets to see MY MOVIE! ...
      I was not disappointed at all!
      The Regan girl was much more real than he had imagined ... like all the other characters.
      To this day, I still see it ... not just as a cult movie, but as a movie that reflects what the world was like at that time: fashion, speech, weather, customs, etc.
      I love this movie, and as they say now: I'm a freak, since I know it too much, with filming anecdotes included ...
      I'm sorry! Sorry for extending myself so much, and sorry for my English ...

    If you read the Bible, there was an incident where Jesus's followers brought a possessed man to him for help. The Bible states that Jesus commanded the devils to leave the man and that the demons left the man and went into some pigs nearby. The pigs fell over a cliff and the demons and the pigs both died at the same time.

    I watched a video about how the audience back then reacted to the movie
    The director's cut had it, once it was remastered for an anniversary.
    I was born in 73 when it came out, so I think I accidentally saw bits and pieces from it maybe 8 or 9 years later. Her face was burned in to the back of my eyelids. It haunted me as an adult. I'm fine with it now.

    My favorite part of this movie is that Merrin is played up so much as an old man contrasted with Karras, when actually Max von Sydow was only 43 during filming. And he only passed away earlier this year at 90, which thanks to this movie's influence gave the impression that he'd just been really old all that time.

    Now, skip Exorcist 2, and go right into “Exorcist 3” (aka. “Legion”, which is what it was intended to be called). “Exorcists 3” is more of a murder mystery/police procedural, it follows the cop character Kinderman, from the first film, in this film he’s now played by George C Scott. exorcist3 has close ties to the events of the first film. It’s sooo good.
    It’s based on a novel called “legion”, written by the same author of the books, William peter Blatty, who was the screenwriter to the first exorcist film, as well as the writer/director of this third film.
    Seriously IGNORE EXORCIST 2. It’s bad and nobody liked it. 1&3 are the good ones, made by the original source material author. They both make incredible companion pieces

I do think there is a big difference sitting in a dark theatre with fully sound (I can't think anything sounding more disturbing than the scenes during the exorcism with the howls, or jungle type sounds and laughing in the background, as it was mentioned father merrin did an exorcism years earlier in Africa, I wonder how that tied in) vs. a fully lit and warm living room with home comforts. I think you also mentioned in an earlier reaction you watch on a laptop, which I think takes away, but I appreciate you taking the time for your reviews!!

    Revisiting this film with all the reactions by RUclipsrs lately, it always struck me funny that Max von Sydow, Father Marrin, was only 44 when he made this. Linda Blair was helped by actress Mercedes McCambridge who supplied the devil's voice and actress Eileen Dietz who did the more intense and heavy effects scenes. Although Blair did end up with a fractured back getting thrown around in the rig while on the bed.

      Ellen only appears:
      -From the back when Regan slaps the doctor.
      -The crotch shot when Regan uses the crucifix.
      -A quick subliminal shot of Regan throwing up on Karras.
      Aside from that, Linda Blair did everything else. However, Eillen does appear as the face of the demon Pazuzu.

      I agree they should react to part 3. EX2 is horrible but part 3. Oh man I love that movie. Detective Kinderman is played by another actor but he's still great in the part.
      In EX2 they show what happened in the room with Merrin and the demon. But the author of the novel chose to ignore the events of part 2 when he wrote part 3, so it doesn't really count anymore. but at the time it at least showed what happened. When Merrin is found dead, the demon aka Pazuzzu, has a very sad look on it's face. that's cuz because in a way it was. the demon actually respected Merrin and there was sadness there. but of course it realized its greatest enemy was now gone and started to laugh. it was also trying to get to Karras.

    My impression, and I may very well be misunderstanding, was that Father Marrin died because he willingly opened his heart, mind and body to become a vessel for Pazuzu, then was able, at the last moment, to hurl himself out the window, slaying himself, and thus expelling the demon. This is a terrible sacrifice for a Catholic, as suicide it a mortal sin, condemning one to Hell...so, in effect, he was saying, "You'll go back to hell, if I have to drag you there myself!"

    The Iraq scene implies that the demon/ the primordial past. Fr Merrin has done exorcism before and possibly met this demon. The battle between and the demon will conclude in this movie.
    Aside from demon possession it's a story of the priest seeking redemption and made the ultimate sacrifice. Fr Kharis faith was terribly weakened due to the guilt from his mother's death.
    His redemption came when Regan's mother asked if her daughter will die. Realizing that he could not allow another tragedy to happen Fr Kharis returned to the room determined to save the child from the demon. This regained his strength and faith.
    NOTE : Back then Catholics believed suicide is a sin. So the scene where Fr Kharis confesses his sin before he dies was necessary in order for him to received salvation.

      So was the Face of Death that appears for a frame (more than once in the director's cut). Two different women though.

      @gyno “guys” is just a general term for people, it doesn’t mean they are male lmao.

    • @oscarrenouf
      @oscarrenouf 4 года назад

      @gyno no it’s the fact that you twisted what the original comment was lol. Even if one of em is trans that’s not what the original comment was implying AT ALL.

    • @oscarrenouf
      @oscarrenouf 4 года назад

      @gyno bro what?? You thought that the original comment was saying they are trans because it said “guys” I then responded to your comment saying “no it’s just that guys is a phrase that’s used for all genders” no one ever said they were trans bro just stop lol.

    • @oscarrenouf
      @oscarrenouf 4 года назад

      @gyno I never said any of that, all I said / meant was that the original comment isn’t saying she’s trans. That’s all I was saying.

    It's not a Horror movie. It's actually a psychological thriller, it's tests the thoughts about science and faith. The mother trusted in science, at first. The young priest, lost his faith.
    It's horrific, but shows how redemption can happen.
