Why does Hollywood lean so far to the Left?
I'm an entertainment journalist and movie critic, so I get asked this question a lot.
`If Hollywood reflected America, then half of Tinsel Town should be as red as it is blue. But that’s not remotely the case.
Why?
Here are five reasons.
One. Guilt.
A-list actors are paid incredible amounts of money to play dress-up. They’re ridiculously fortunate. And they know it. And they feel guilty about it.
That guilt must be assuaged.
And what better way to assuage it than to speak up for the “less fortunate”: the undocumented immigrant, the misunderstood criminal, women, blacks, gays, and the transgendered. And, by God, there’s an entire planet to be saved!
You can’t feel guilty if you’re saving humanity, can you? Especially if it means no actual sacrifice on your part.
Two. The Need for Meaning
Somewhere along the line - probably in the ‘60s when so many wholesome ideas went south - the notion that providing entertainment was, in and of itself, valuable, lost currency - not with the public, but with the glitterati.
Sure, acting brings money and fame, but not “meaning.” And meaning is more important than both, especially if you can purchase it so inexpensively: all you have to do is say the right things about the right causes. That those causes always happen to be leftist ones is merely a coincidence.
Three. The Need to Be Loved.
Everyone wants to be loved and admired. But most actors live to be loved and admired. Success for an actor is being adored by strangers. When stars rail against border enforcement, pro-lifers, or a certain real estate mogul, and get fawning press coverage, that’s even more love and admiration.
And there’s a bonus. You get to be told how courageous you are “for speaking out.” A rant about “gun violence” on Oscar night becomes a “powerful statement.” It doesn’t get better than that.
Speaking of Oscars, if you have any hope of winning an award - (and who doesn’t want awards?), that ambition goes out the window if you’re suspected of being on the wrong side of the political aisle.
Four. Career Preservation
Job security doesn’t exist in Hollywood. And this makes everyone, from the top stars to the lowest crew members, very nervous.
So, in order not to give anyone the slightest excuse not to hire them, Hollywood types double down on woke posts to Twitter or Instagram praising the latest leftist fad.
These messages send a clear signal to their colleagues, and especially to their employers: “I’m a forward-thinking progressive, just like you.”
Push against this orthodoxy and you’ll pay a stiff price. Ask Gina Carano how that works. When the star of the popular Disney series, The Mandalorian, suggested that conservatives were being persecuted for their political beliefs, she was light-sabered from both the show and Hollywood, Inc.
Or consider how singer Macy Gray changed her tune after she said trans women aren’t the same as women-women. Mercilessly pounded for this apostasy, it only took a few days for her to fully recant.
Five. If It’s Right, It Must Be Wrong
There is a pervasive belief in Hollywood that conservative ideas are grounded in “hate” or “denial”. Conservatives hate gays and minorities, deny science and even deny that America is systemically racist … and on and on.
Imagine, they wail, if these haters ever gained power. We’d descend into fascism, or worse.
This explains why celebrities get hysterical whenever the political winds shift. Hollywood activists never say, “oh, we lost that one,” they say it’s the “end of the world.” And to them, it is.
Okay, I can hear you asking, why should we care what Hollywood actors think? I agree we shouldn’t care so much, but - let’s face it - a lot of people do. Stars are American royalty.
And, like it or not, they have a big platform. When they take strident political positions, it further divides us.

Actors, directors and producers have now brought their activism into the movies themselves... and boy do they suck!
The only way to deal with extreme narcissists is to ignore them. Turn off the TV, stop going to movies until they get the message. Otherwise, don't expect any change. By the way, stop calling people who memorize lines and read them back with emotion "stars." They are anything but.
But that's being done. Take this stupid Bros movie. No one except gays and the woke are going to see it and it bombed. Instead of putting their hands to their chins and saying, "Perhaps this is something that only a small segment of society wants to see hence it's a terrible idea", they lash out and say that we're all bigots because we don't want to see a movie with men kissing. In short, they're too wrapped up in the notion that the world ends at the tip of their noses to get why their movies are tanking.
Actually watch their movies and enjoy their acting but DON’T watch anything that gives them a platform for their “owners” agenda! No Oscars, no Canns Film Festival, No Golden Globes or Emmys, Grammys. Do NOT watch woke themed movies or films with altered historical events. As Kurt Russel says they should stay being court jesters not politicians or propaganda machines.
I stopped going to theaters over SIX years ago. Ever since Hollyweird went on an all out hateful attack on Trump, they lost their carefully faked image. They are just lapdogs for Biden. I hope THEY pay $9 a gallon for gas. It's coming pretty soon.
They've turned movies into their platform. That's why almost all movies, cartoons and TV shows are woke garbage these days. Ignoring them and voting with your wallet is a much better solution.

@@jayteah1349 Even most of those aren't truly 'independent', since anything with higher production value than a college kid project has to go through most of the same middlemen to get funding, PR, publishing rights, etc. All wrapped up in the same modern progressive world order, one way or another.
There's actually a lot of *independent movies being made. They greatly outnumber summer blockbusters and romcoms.

I believe society is better rejecting motion pictures unless it's for specific reasons and a specific genre: family time or watching a comedy. We'd be better off reading a book, seeing the ballet, opera, symphony, modern dance, plays or musicals. Or, using that two hours of watching a tv series or film exercising or investing ourselves in a hobby that produces some sort of good: baking, learning to play the guitar, volunteering etc..

It doesn't take much ability to be a decent actor. That's all you need to be talent wise in front of the camera: decent. The other parts is willing to shed your clothes and having a semi-decent agent to be able to rise up in the ranks of "unknown" to "up-and-coming" to "established."

Forget it. Hollywood isn’t going to change until enough of us break them by not watching their movies and TV shows or listening to their so-called music.
Do yourself a favor, read a book. The classics of yesterday are more creative and intellectually stimulating than the crap hollyweird is cranking out nowadays.
If one wants real, genuine art instead of mainstream tv/film, I'd suggest go to the ballet, symphony or opera, or see a musical or play. Listen to a live band or singer. Write poetry and listen to poetry alongside reading. Visit museums of both classical and modern art. There are many fine alternatives to paying to see a movie or binge watching a tv series.
So no more crushes, and teenagers should stop being teenagers? Looking up to someone that's not our parents is what part of being a young adult most the time is like unfortunately. I've got an even better suggestion that I learned to do the hard way. Be PICKY! Look for nice celebrities that don't talk much about politics or just semi-Hollywood stars. Or you can choose an easy to love old-time cartoon character or one from a stand alone animation film to look up to and use as a role model.
Sadly, Hollywood doesn't seem to care what the rest of us think. Even the writers of the new She-hulk purposely trolled the fans. Hollywood is beyond redemption.

You want them to act, until they state opinion you agree with, then suddenly you love their opinion. Basically, don NOT let the jesters dictate how things should be.
I'd like to add that there were two reasons why Hollywood was located in that part of the country.
1. Back in the early 20th century, film wasn't very sensitive to light, and sunny California offered many many days of bright sunshine to help expose the film properly.
2. But more importantly, back then they were way away from the rest of civilization. This meant that morality laws on the books at that time were unenforceable. Hollywood quickly became a place of drugs, sex, parties, scandals, and so on; typical for places were lawlessness abounds. Hollywood was always rotten to the core.
BTW, do you know why it is called "Hollywood"? Because the wood of the Holly tree is what magic wands are made of! They are "casting spells", so to speak.
They don't care. Once they ruin their business, they will shift priorities. Follow the money.
I got rid of my TV in 2012. I no longer watch or pay for modern mainstream media. I no longer go to the cinema. It's been an easy choice to make as most modern media is so awful! It isn't just that they preach so one sided and hypocritically but they don't even seem to know how to do it in an entertaining way anymore.

The internet changed the music & movie industry. It used to be that small time artists could make a few bucks off a song but now they are forced use their music as advertising & get their money in live performances.
Ever noticed how concert tickets are so damn expensive? That's how artists make their money because it's too easy to download & listen to their music for free.
Same goes for movies. Used to be you could see a movie in theaters for cheap. Then people started smuggling cameras in to film the whole movie and share it online for free or smuggle a copy out of the theatre outright.
I haven't Paid to watch a Movie in Years.

OK, that explains about the actors. But what about the producers and directors who don't get the same limelight?
Actors don't pay for my rent, food, transportation or taxes, that is why I could care less about their opinions. I like to watch old moves because they make you think about the characters, plot and I admire the styles of the past.
There used to be an unwritten rule that you did not bring religion or politics into entertainment because you were bound to offend someone. I quit watching television 8 years ago due to the woke propaganda infecting TV shows. Apparently millions have joined me in no longer watching TV as ratings are in the basement. I have not been to a movie since 2017 due to the mediocrity that has resulted from the embrace of "woke". Hollywood used to rule the world and set the standard for quality entertainment. That is not the case anymore.
I believe I’m speaking for the majority of the people in the US that your programming is a critical element in educating the populace and doing so in a factual balanced manner. Thank you all for your your effort and product.

I think another reason is that a good actor is an emotional person. The left campaigns to emotion while the right campaigns to reason.

My question is this: Why does ANYONE care or even want to follow anyone in Hollywierd and their spoiled ilk behavior?
They just said & follows whatever is trending. They are like NPC. Whatever someone have a mind of their own, there is always one that wants to put you down.
It's difficult to find anything to watch being made today that hasn't already been tarnished by the left. I only watch old movies and tv shows now
If you truly want to change this, do as I have done.
Turn off your television. I no longer watch it or go to Hollywood movies.
If enough people do that, Tinseltown will quickly crumble.

If tv and film only had 2/3rds of its working budget and where there's only a handful of projects that are greenlit in either tv or film - 99% the actors would flee because they know there's little money to be paid and they know it would be that much harder to get a decent agent and roles.
I always find it hysterically when actors and actresses play cops on television in "reel" life, but then support movements of Defund the Police in "real" life.
Though I'm a left-winger I'm utterly against illegal immigration & illegal migration. Neither thing can't be and mustn't ever be encouraged, overlooked or tolerated.

We should stop giving these people money!! Stop going to the movies! Stop buying their merchandise! Same thing with sports stop going to games stop buying merchandise. We The People could really change this part of society!!! By taking away OUR Hard Earned Money!!! It's really that simple.
I have stopped going to their movies and have turned off their TV shows… I’ve discovered something better, independent films and audio books. Good riddance!

I turned my back on Hollywood and sports 2 years ago. I should have done it 30 years ago. What a waste of life.

The amount of movies I went to see back in my teens & twenties far outnumbers the movies I went to see after 2018. The last great movies I went to see were "Django Unchained" "The equalizer" & "Fury" because I loved the politically incorrect feeling of them. The last movie I ever saw in theaters was Jackass forever & even it felt like they went woke.
I recommend Top Gun: Maverick. I say this as someone who does NOT normally like Tom Cruise.

To me, "Hollywood" is no longer an actual place (which it is) or a symbol for the film industry (which it serves) but a cultural point of view that hates America. I gravitate towards anything that is "independent" or made outside the Hollywood film industry like "Sound of Freedom".
Perhaps one thing the average person can do against the money-go-round in Hollywood is to pull on the eye patch. Aye, me hearties.

I've worked on Hollywood for over decade and you sir... are correct.
because it takes a lot of work to actually make a difference and they are too lazy to actually do anything about it so they lie and pretend to make themselves feel better.
The thing that irks me the most is that going to the movies use to be escapism from the madness of life. Today, unfortunately, its the complete opposite. You go there and the films aren't subtle in the slightest bit. Its in your face preaching and proselytizing. The complete opposite experience from once upon a time. Instead of getting away from it you get sandbagged with it.
Many years ago (more than a decade maybe?) I came across this site/blog called HollywoodinToto and found its movie reviews quite refreshing. It was like reading actual analysis on film making instead of the copy-paste mouthpieces that plagued access media. It wasn't even a political thing, because there wasn't any, I just liked the way they approached film critique. I guess some part of me instinctively read between the lines and found it was an echo of truth amongst an ocean of shills. So now, when my movie watching days are long gone, I find it reassuring to see the man behind it was indeed a critical thinker and not a servant of the Cult.

As Society continues to enable the Cult of Personality and Narcissism of Hollywood we're going to keep getting their "opinions" on the State of Affairs. Gotta separate the wheat from the chaff. Most of what Hollywood spouts is the latter.

When I become a Nurse, and saw how we help save lives on a daily basis, I lost respect for actors. It made me question the astronomical salaries that actors and sports stars get compared to nurses, nurses aides, firemen, policemen, EMT’s… people that actually make a real difference in peoples lives. I should have guessed then that I was voting for the wrong political party (I was still voting Democrat at that time. 🙄). I eventually researched and found that I was really a conservative all of the time. I then started voting according to my values, and haven’t voted Democrat since.
We’ll why don’t you give yourself a round of applause. Typical conservative thinking they’re an American Hero. You and every other Baby Mama is a nurse. It’s nothing special. Get over yourself. Police, fire, and military aren’t heroes either. They’re literally in these professions because they’re either too lazy or too stupid to go to college.
I don't mind professional sports stars salaries since (1) sports is arguable a necessary good of life where it does bring a community together, (2) they know that their careers only last, at best, a decade and (3) there's an actual process of vetting athletes of their talent - a real pyramid of talent. Actors? They're the most non-essential profession out of all the non-essentials.
Plus people make fun of athletes - they aren't nearly as worshiped as actors.

Sadly, movie and sport stars bring tons of people to the theaters, TVs or stadiums. There`s no way that anyone goes to the Hospital to buy a ticket to watch nurses doing their jobs. It is sad, but that`s why nurses and Policemen are underpayed.
Life doesn't and cannot work that way. We don't have some central government 'moral good' judging panel that then redistributes money based on who they decide is the most morally important. I hope we never get to that point.

I used to agree with the whole "shut up and act" argument that Laura Ingraham put out. But I think that ship has sailed. Instead, we need a conservative and independent alternatives to Hollywood - That's the path Daily Wire and Tim Pool are going, and that seems to be working far better than "shut up and act."
You can't counter bad ideas by telling people to shut up. You counter bad ideas using good ideas.
